A wonderful gem named for the Roman philosopher, hidden among the side streets on the south side of the Aventine Hill, just paces from the old Roman road to Ostia(the Viale Aventino). The staff were warm, welcoming, professional, unobtrusive, in every way the best of Roman hospitality. The menu was refined but not showy, honest but not simple; the wines inspired but not costly. As the courses appeared(beef carpaccio, grilled octopus, baked cod, a personalized request for linguine pomodoro con basilico), the mood of our small group changed from stressed tourists to delighted, loving family. Apuleius was once accused of having dabbled in magic. I’m not so sure the charges were unjustified, I felt happily bewitched before the evening was over and we walked home past the Circus Maximus, slightly stunned with gratitude.

I and my wife dinned at Apuleius on Valentine’s day, I had chosen this restaurant because of the romantic setting and good reviews about the place and food. The settings are really romantic, we really enjoyed it. The staff, and particularly Emiliano the owner, is very professionnal and friendly. The food was good though not as great as expected from some reviews and the sound of the menu. We found some of the plates lacking on the«delicatesse» side of things but everything’s done with fresh and quality ingredients, well presented and apetizing. The price is in line with with the quality of the food served, not too expensive but not cheap either. We’ll keep a good souvenir from this evening and would recommend the place to all lovers looking for a such romantic place to have dinner.
