On a cold afternoon in February, I popped in here to find out more about the legend of the«caffe sospeso» and take a look at the place. Claudio, one of the owners of this bright, airy coffee bar and café, is from Benevento, and has brought the Neapolitan tradition of helping out an unknown customer into the heart of his business. Down in Naples, the custom of the«caffe sospeso» sees generous bar clientele leave a coffee in the till, as it were, for a future, unknown customer. Here, Claudio goes one better: the coffee is always free(made from a stove-top pot) although the well-stocked bar has other options: there are light bites and live music on a Tuesday. If you’re feeling generous, you can also«leave» a snack or a lunch in the till for someone less fortunate than yourself, by paying for a dish and leaving the receipt in the gold-fish bowl. Generous piece of genius.
