Who lives at this Palazzo on a rock in the centre of Rome? No, it is not the secret hide-​away of popes, neither is it the home of a rich billionaire with frequent guests from around the world. It is the secretariat general of one of the Catholic Church’ most successful missionary orders: the Divine Word Missionaries, SVD or also Steyler missionaries. More than 2000 SVD priests serve around the globe. The headquarters are in STEYL, a town in the Netherlands while they have there Roman office next to the Ostiense train station. Next to some administration many SVD priests come and live here during their visits to the Vatican or for their studies of theology or philosophy or … It does not and cannot compete with 5 star hotels. It deserves 5 stars for the beauty of the work these priests do around the world and the enormous hospitality they have shown me.
And why would I stay here? I happen to have a good friend from Ghana who used to live in the SVD center in Mödling and is now studying here in Rome.
