La Romana

FAVORITE gelato spot in Rome. This means a lot because I managed to eat gelato 6 times in the 3 days I was there. You could say I was on a mission to find the best gelato.
So one reason why this place is above the rest of the fact that that have these fountains of either milk chocolate or white chocolate that they drizzle in your cone before even scooping the gelato.
Second reason, i absolutely fell in love with the flavor with the name biscotto in it, which was basically their cookies and cream, but completely different than the cookies and cream you get in the states. Even their plain milk flavor was amazing! The pistachio is also very true to the core of the flavor.
Needless to say, many other gelato shops in Rome are still amazing. I just somehow ended finding myself here twice when I only went to the other places once.

After sampling a lot of gelato during my time in Roma (I’m talking two-​a-​days for 5 straight days…), I’ve gotta say that I think La Romana might be my favorite.
Let’s start with the interior: it’s very clean with flavors written on wooden slats. The gelato is not in a clear glass visible freezer like in most places, but is kept in a sealed metal container. This is both good and bad, I suppose. Bad because you can’t see inside there so it could be really nasty and you’d never know it (I highly doubt this is the case though). Good because I feel it keeps the gelato at a great temperature and there are less chances of contaminants and bugs and improper storage. There is also ample seating available and everything looks clean and well-​maintained, despite how long the place claims to have been around. Definitely the best kept interior of all the gelato places I’ve had the fortune of trying.
Service: the girl who took our money at the register wasn’t very friendly. The ice cream maiden dishing out our goodies, however, was great. Very nice and let us try a flavor or two. I think almost all the staff here can speak English so don’t be intimidated by the all-​Italian menu.
Goodies/​price: the gelato was super creamy and delicious. If you want, they will drizzle the inside of your cone with a dash of white or dark chocolate– your choice. For a small cone, you can choose two flavors. It only comes to a meager 2 €– one of the cheapest I’ve encountered. However, for the quality of the gelato, I probably would pay more than normal (Generally, I think the avg is 2.50 € for a small cone of two flavors). I had a scoop of the pistachio and a scoop of some chocolate chip tiramisu flavor. Both of them were great and went well together. They even give you the option for whipped cream on top (some places charge extra for whipped cream or chocolate in the cone, this place does not).
All in all, great gelato, nice atmosphere, good service.

Neat find! Long lines. There is no English menu. I ordered what I could read and chose coffee and pesto pistachio. Both were practically melting but very satisfying. They also have two chocolate options for the bottom of your cone! I went with Nutella.

A good gelato shop that has artisanal gelato for reasonable prices! There are tiny pieces of fruit in all the fruit flavors and they fill your cone with liquid chocolate. The gelato itself is creamier than many of the other places in Rome and the flavors and colors are not artificial.

Best gelato in Rome! It’s also one of the cheapest places, I believe it was 2.50 euro for three scoops in a cone! And you know it’s good when there’s always a line, a lot of them being locals. The menu is in all Italian, but the workers there speak pretty good English. Splurge and get a cone and you can choose whether to line the bottom with white or dark chocolate! They also sell brioche con gelato and other desserts. Get the whipped cream on the gelato. I got pistachio, bacio, and biscotto della nonna. Definitely get the biscotto one, it’s AMAZING!

Love the creamy gelato goodness at La Romana. It’s completely worth the wait in line. The piccolo is only 2 euros for two very generous flavors. I had the dark chocolate paired with the ricotta fig. Spectacular! David had the hazelnut and cookies and cream on the first visit and the mixed berry with cookies and cream on the second. Both were awesome. It’s now one of our favorite gelato places in Roma.

Die erste Eisdiele, in die ich in Rom ging, da sie in der Nähe unseres Hotels war und rückblickend auch die beste. Preis/​Leistung unschlagbar. Sehr viele Einheimische — immer ein gutes Zeichen. Die Waffel vorher mit flüssiger Schokolade füllen lassen, dann Eis und frische Sahne on top. Mehr geht nicht — und dann 2 €. Genial !
Schwierig ist nur die Entscheidung, welches Eis man nimmt… alle lecker !

This place is amazing. Hands down the best gelato I’ve tried in Rome so far. The menu is only in Italian so you may need to guess as to the flavors but I can guarantee everything is amazing. Plus you can get topped off with your choice of a fresh whipped cream (I had the coffee which was to die for).

I came here the second time I visited Rome and I can say that it was the best gelato I’ve gotten in Italy. The flavors are all in Italian but the workers are super helpful in translating or helping you pick out a flavor. I asked which flavor they recommended and they immediately asked if i was in the mood for fruity/​nutty/​chocolatey/​light/​rich and then recommended popular flavors as well as their personal preferences. There are many options to choose from and the price was very reasonable for a cone with three flavors. They have fountains of chocolate which they fill the bottom of the cone with. It’s what dreams are made of — I need to get one of those fountains installed at home. All the flavors I got were wonderful and creamy, I never wanted my gelato to end. To top it off, the whipped cream is absolutely phenomenal.

What did we do to cap off a wonderful and satisfying lunch at Mamma Angela’s Trattoria? Easy — gelati at Gelateria La Romana! We got here by walking northwest along Via Palestro until we reached Via Venti Settembre. It was roughly a 10-​minute trek but with the promise of gelati right around the corner, no one was complaining… or at least that’s what I thought.
Gelateria La Romana has been around for 69 years and unlike the usual window-​type shops that we’ve been to, this one has some seats and tables inside the store. But just like every great gelateria, there was a long line that greeted us at the door. Their gelati were in closed metal containers but all the flavors they had were written in Italian on the chalkboards at the top wall. If you’re the visual kind who’d like to see what you’d order, then you’d have to rely on the Unilocal photos or the gelati that were being served. Free samples (and translation) are available.
Characteristics and taste were doubtlessly topnotch — smooth, creamy, bold, and every other aspect that goes into the making of high-​quality gelato can be said. Same going rate as the other gelaterie — 2 € for a small serving of 1 or 2 flavors. But what made this different from the rest that we’ve tried were their chocolate faucets! If you get a cone, they’ll ask if you want the bottom to be filled with dark or white chocolate. It’s not the hard shell kind so don’t let it drip when you’re nearing the end.
It’s a bit of a walk from any of the nearest Metro stations, but there’s a bus stop nearby. I have no idea which bus number runs this route but it’s probably your best bet if you’re taking public transportation. There are surely other modes so do your research and get yourself here. Experience «l’amore per il gelato dal 1947.»

Amplia variedad de gustos. El lugar esta muy bien ambientado. Los helados son lo mejor. Solo hablaban ingles. Probamos el vasito de 4 gustos y ademas le ponen crema que podes elegir entre 4 sabores de crema tambien, asi q serian 5 sabores. La elaboracion es a la vista. Muy comodo para sentarse y super tranquilo para conversar. Tambien tenian postres pero no los probamos. Parada obligatoria en roma esta heladeria.

Stayed across this place our first time in Rome, and wondered why there was a long line for gelato. Stood in line for 2 hours wondering what the fuzz is about. The soft gelato here is unlike any that I’ve had in Italy. This place only uses fresh, high quality ingredients made in-​house.
Fast forward 2 years later, and we’re back in Rome once again. This time we stayed further out of town. We were hoping to find another hole in the wall gelato place… Only to have us craving for this place once again. Took the Metro, braved the rain, just to have some La Romana.

4.5÷5 stars for me. This is my favorite gelato place in Rome (Frigidarium is #2). The gelato is super creamy and doesn’t melt too fast. La Romana has your basic gelato flavors (vanilla, cookie dough, chocolate, pistachio, etc) as well as a few specialty flavors, but the gelato is done so well, I’d rather have the vanilla gelato from here than any other gelato place. There will most likely be a line out the door, but the gelato is worth the wait.

This is hands down the best gelato I’ve had in Rome (and I’ve had a decent amount of gelato, including Giolitti, Gelateria del Gracchi, Venchi, Frigidarium, Fata morgana — PS let me know if you have more places that are amazing). The only downside is that their menu is in Italian and there’s no English, but the lady gladly answered in English when I asked what fruit flavors they had (mandarin, strawberry, banana, mixed berry, and I think one more that I don’t remember right now) serving me. I then asked what the most popular flavor was, and she said it was the hazelnut cream with banana and chocolate while she reached for a spoon giving me a sample! The chocolate hazelnut was quite delicious, so I got that. She then suggested the banana with it, and I said ok! Great choice. I got a small in a cone, and they have chocolate drizzling out of a tap; she put a blob of that at the bottom of my cone. Both flavors were wonderfully flavored and creamy, and the consistency was amazing. The chocolate hazelnut was a tad sweet, but it was super delicious, had real whole nuts in it, and had real chocolate. It was so good. The banana blew my mind away; I was a bit hesitant getting the banana at first because I don’t normally like banana-​flavored foods (probably because they’re all artificially flavored), but this banana, wow. It tasted like real banana, and I could see the banana seeds in the gelato. It was amazing. The entire time I was eating my gelato, I was thinking about how good it tasted. Then, as I was almost finished, I reached the liquidy chocolate at the bottom of my cone. Great ending to a great treat; I left so happy!
There are some chairs and tables in the shop as well, so you can sit there to enjoy your gelato. They have a bunch of sweet cake-​y desserts in the refrigerator that looked pretty delightful as well.
Highly, highly, highly recommend! It is amazing!!! Hazelnut and banana go together perfectly! It’s also the cheapest gelato I’ve seen, at € 2 for a small!

Quand vous arrivez devant Romana, il y a très souvent une queue devant la boutique.
Qu’importe, il faut absolument que vous attendiez car l’attente vaut le détour !
Je n’ai pas eu l’occasion de tester leur gâteaux exposés en vitrine, juste avant le comptoir à glacé et qui donne bien envie quand vous faites la queue pour une glacé.

Cependant en terme de parfum je recommande vivement: yaourt (toujours mon numéro 1 favori en Italie), Baccio di Dama Con Mardorle Tostate et Crema sont aussi très bons, savoureux et très crémeux
Il y a quelques parfums originaux comme: Ricotta Caramel ou Granita Siciliana all ananas

La Romana was the best gelato I’ve ever eaten. They make it there, and have been since 1947. I chose a «small» Fiordelatte (flower of milk) and Sacher (like the chocolate torte flavor) for 2 Euros, or about $ 2.30 US, which included chocolate or vanilla sauce in the cone, AND home made whipped cream on top! I only added the chocolate at the bottom of my cone and luckily I had plenty of napkins because I forgot and bit into it making a delightful mess like a kid eating a sundae:) The consistency is lighter and smoother than any gelato I’ve tasted, and the flavors range from the unusual to the approachable, like tiramisu.

I don’t even know how to start here. They make gelato, the best gelato that I have ever tried (I really liked the biscuit/​cookie one, and the hazelnut one) BUT THEN they will coat the inside of the cone with chocolate (nutella?) or white chocolate.
It is heavely. So heavenly that multiple times I tricked my BF into thinking that we were lost and just happened upon this place again and again and again.
Seriously, I walked MILES out of the way just to have this almost every single day of our vacation. Do not miss it!

Very good gelato, especially the grapefruit sherbet, hands down one of the best flavors we had in Italy. Cheap too — € 3 for a large 3-​scoop cup.
But nothing is translated into English, which makes ordering difficult, and the waiters /​waitresses are not particularly friendly. It is a chain and you feel it when you come here.

Definitely the best gelato that I’ve ever had. Our hotel happened to be located near this gelato shop and we just so happened to walk by it a couple of times a day… I won’t deny that we actually ate gelato from them twice in one day (it was that good!). This is the ONLY dessert place in the entire world that my husband has actually been excited about. They give you a homemade waffle cone and fill the bottom with warm melted chocolate (either dark or white), add some gelato and then top it off with fresh cream.
We tried a lot of gelato in Italy… and really none of the other places came in close to this one. I tried their walnut, almond, hazelnut and pistachio to name a few (all were excellent). My husband was partial to stracciatella. There was a language barrier… so it wasn’t easy to communicate what the flavors were (otherwise I would have tried more!). All of that being said, I would happily take my chances with any of them as they all seemed to be amazing.

I’m not exaggerating when I say this place is a slice of heaven. We randomly found this place on my first night in Rome and it was so amazing we came back every single day on our trip. They have desserts and gelato but sadly, I never got to try the dessert because the gelato had me hooked!
I recommend going with the medium cone for 2.50. DO NOT SKIP ON THE CONE! I’m going to repeat, do not skip on the cone because in that crunchy, delectable cone they put your choice of milk chocolate or white chocolate at the bottom. From there, if you go with the medium, you get 3 scoops of the creamiest most delicious gelato ever. To finish it off, you get a choice of regular or chocolate whipped cream on the top. This isn’t regular whipped cream from the can my friends, this cream is best described as a fluffy mousse.
There is a reason this place has a line out the door but don’t let that stop you from trying it. The employees are super sweet, efficient, and quick so it moves pretty fast. Also, the flavors are all in italian but the employees will let you try as many samples as you want. Man I’m going to miss this place!

Hands up, two of them to my face of scoops of this amazingly delicious gelato.
This is what gelato is supposed to be. The absolute perfect texture, flavor, consistency.
Plus, they scoop from stainless steel containers which means the gelato maintains its freshness longer than most places.
For tourists, they speak English and despite the long lines their service is excellent. They keep the line moving efficiently but also give each customer a lot of attention so that you can try multiple flavors.
If you’ve ever wanted to know what really good, authentic gelato tastes like, this is your place. It this too much praise? No, this artisan (phrase accurately used here) gelato warrants all of it.
Stand in line with the rest of the believers and locals because its worth any and all wait.

Endroit très agréable ou tout nos sens se réveille dans des dessert glacé au goût authentique, je vous le recommande vivement

De très bonnes glaces servies en cornet ou pot. Pas mal de goûts originaux. L’endroit est très fréquenté. Un peu éloigné du centre ville mais vaut le détour. Pas trop loin de la gare de termini.
