This is an old hotel with very hard beds. Internet doesn’t work in every room. Don’t stay here if you can help it.

We came here by accident, because we wanted to find a restaurant reasonably close to our hotel, and this restaurant was a real surprise. The food is exceptional, and the service attention to detail is very very good. We were greeted with a glass of complimentary Prosecco, and all of the plating of food and general service is done tableside — which adds an element of drama to the dining experience. We are still in run, and intend to go back to this restaurant before we leave the city in a few days. My husband and I had and antipasti plate, and I had the house risotto which was very very very good, as 90% of restaurants just can’t seem to get a risotto cooked correctly. We also had dessert from the cart they bring to the table so you can point to the items you’d like, which also has an element of novelty about it. In all, this was a very enjoyable experience and while it may not be one of the most prestigious restaurants in Rome, dinners will not find themselves disappointed.

After a disappointing encounter atop the Mediterraneo hotel(somehow that reads like I was having lunch with Superman), I decided that my first dinner away from my Globus tour would be someplace better. Finding a good restaurant in walking distance from any hotel in Room can be a difficult task given the saturation of gelaterias, cafes, and pizzerias. I had no cell service so lacked immediate access to Trip Advisor, making it impossible to differentiate the seedy from the sublime. I wandered within walking distance of my hotel for over an hour but nothing stirred me. I didn’t want pizza; I wanted a full course meal, and oddly enough, my ultimate choice was next door to where I started, the Ristorante Massimo d’Azeglio, another hotel’s restaurant. Alas, for those on the Globus tour, you may never know that a great restaurant sits only a few feet from your room. And for those of you with an attention span shorter than a ferret on a double expresso, you can stop reading here and move on – the Ristorante Massimo d’Azeglio is really good. Somewhat anti-climactic really. For everyone else, you may have read or been told that many restaurants in Rome charge you for water, ambience, bread, seating, service, and apparently being in Rome, penny pinching at every opportunity. In defense, I did encounter this early in my journey. This evening, I decided I wasn’t going to stress myself about such things and ignore the coming bill. I didn’t concern myself when the bread basket was presented or a glass of wine poured without asking. They even replaced the bread basket after I cleared it out. I ordered the chef’s suggestion menu, tagliatelle with lemon sauce, beef carpaccio, and each plate prepared by the table. An uncut lemon halved, seeds plucked out, and then spiked with a fork before drizzled over the beef – it was as much theater as food. Even the dessert was a visible menu, with the tray wheeled to my side allowing me to select from the available cakes.
I’m not saying the meal was perfect – there appears to be an aversion to offer a bill, and this was not the only time this happened on my trip. With Massimo, I had to wait twenty minutes, and ended up asking two different people before it was finally delivered. Here was where the experience fell into the bizarre. The menu I had ordered from promised the Chef Suggestion for 35 Euros. The final price adding in water, bread, and wine,(pause for drumroll) 35 euros. That’s right, not a single dime added for the service and compliments. I suddenly felt bad for being on the defensive the two previous days in Rome. Although Massimo had no way of knowing, I was overcome by an overwhelming desire to leave a significant tip. After two lackluster first meals in Rome, Massimo was a much needed jolt to my expectations. Some restaurants don’t phone it in, surfing the reputation of the country. Some places earn their praise. People at the front desk have bad attitudes. I may aid take and had them exchange American money for Euro’s. They got me good. I shouldn’t have let them get away with it but I was in hurry and didn’t want to make s scene. Rooms are clean but small. Wifi would not work. Front desk people seem to have attitudes and are not accommodating. If I were you, I would take my business elsewhere.

We stayed at the Hotel Massimo D’Azeglio in Rome for one day in March 2014 after our cruise. We picked this hotel because it was one short block away from the main train station. Our room was on the 5th floor, facing the main street. The room was somewhat small with no place to lay two suitcases flat comparing to the other hotel which we had stayed before the cruise.(That hotel was about 10 blocks away which had a cod beside the queen-size bed for the two of us.) Internet was slow but free. The mattress was hard. The small area rug by the bed near window was half-faded. Our room was stuffy to the point where we had to endure the noisy traffic and leave the window open throughout the entire time. We did not take advantage of the free breakfast because we left the hotel early for our train to the airport.

Conveniently located hotel(a block from the train station). Was a nice stay and a nice and comfy room. Price was on par with what you’d expect. Staff was friendly too. Didn’t eat dinner at the restaurant, as there are tons of options in Rome. Internet is free, but it’s slow and the password constantly changes and they print up the code on paper that is down at the front desk. It was pretty annoying having to run down constantly to get them. The breakfast was okay. Not great. And the hotel is directly on the main street, so it could get loud with the windows open. Still, a decent place and great location.

Very nice, elegant hotel and restaurant. We stayed here for a week in May of 2010. Friendly staff, clean rooms. The restaurant was a bit snobby, but the food was great.
