On our first night in Rome we were told we had to go to Nonna Betta. We made our way to the Jewish Ghetto and sat outside. It was so much fun to watch the neighbors walk by – priests enjoying gelato, neighbors pinching kiddos cheeks, grandmothers sitting together gossiping on benches, the grandfather’s across the way, a woman waved down from her 3rd story apartment. It was wonderful! Our waiter was really nice. We had a few apps – it was artichoke season so we got fried artichokes, we also got carozza(fried mozzerella and anchovies), and some fried cod. All were delicious! Lots of fried apps, ha. For dinner, I got the Roman gnocchi – it was served in a small, hot crock and had a delicious(rich!) sauce. The gnocchi were larger than what I’m used to, and pillowy and delicious – it was really lovely. My friends had pasta and also enjoyed their meals.

I’m giving the restaurant 4 stars instead of 5 because the service was so slow at first. Once we got a table, we had to wait at least 30 minutes to place our order and that was only after the guests at the table next to us called another server over. Once we switched servers, things were moving much faster. We ordered the Jewish carbonara, oxtail soup, and the antipasto nonni betta. Everything was very flavorful and we really enjoyed our meal.

It has literally taken me a year to write this review. I saw that I still had my notes about this place. So glad I’m getting around to it because this place is superb. This restaurant is nothing short of amazing. I was with my mother on vacation and we stumbled upon Nonna Betta around early dinner time. Perfect! We were hungry anyway. The service was fast, friendly, and memorable. We were one of the first customers for dinner. The employees liked to play around a lot but are very attentive to you when you want it. Their playfulness added to the relaxed atmosphere. We ordered red wine, fried mozzarella, pasta with artichoke sauce and fried artichoke. Fried Mozzarella 5⁄5: Mozza tasted fresh and looked like a twinkie which was kind of funny. I love mozza and to try it fried change my whole mozza-loving life. Fried Artichoke 5⁄5: Very crunchy and marinated in olive oil. Delicious and great for starters. Pasta 4⁄5: Watch out when chewing. the artichoke skins are very tough and can take away from the overall experience of tasting the pasta. Tasty either way. Points for the staff: Serve the starter bread with sauce or something. It was only toasted.

Get the house wine! Ignore the rest of what they offer you won’t be disappointed. I recommend that you only get one fried artichoke to share by they are amazing! Very happy with the food!

This is a fabulous place for authentic Jewish Roman food. Mostly pasta and artichoke dishes. The fried artichoke is amazing and the pasta is buttery and perfect like I have never had. Anthony Bourdane has been here too.

Love this place! Everything we had here was good. Of course, the Jewish-style artichoke. Yes, Anthony Bordain was here and loved it, ignore that review(or read the restaurants explanation of the location). I had the paté that was hearty. The eggplant parmesan was overcooked but had good flavors(so maybe ask them to remove from oven early). My mom had the baked lamb that she really enjoyed — tender meat. And my sister had some linguini with beef that she really enjoyed, especially the flavors of the light sauce. It is right in the heart of the«Jewish ghetto», had nice /helpful servers that helped with recommendations for our food. Plenty of outside tables. Couple of street performers walked around playing a nice music on a violin and then a clarinet.

Absolutely fabulous! My friend and I were staying nearby, but chose this place for dinner based on Unilocal reviews! The artichoke is a must along with their fried mozzarella which we were hankering for the next day. Her fish was excellent as was my pasta thought on a very hot plate! We also got the kosher wine which was yummy and much better than the ones I had tried. They make it themselves so! Great service and atmosphere to feel Italian, but also feel a different version of Italian culture!

It was so good that we went twice for lunch. Good service and nice people. This is some real, authentic Roman Jewish food. Very traditional dishes.

Went there with much hope, especially since my hubby is Jewish on his mother’s side(which means he’s Jewish!!), and he fondly remembers his mother’s fried artichokes and blossoms. Plus I respect Tony Bourdain’s opinions.But.I found the food very salty, and the fried items were almost«over-fried». But, the staff was nice, especially since it was Xmas Eve.

Best food I’ve had so far in the whole month I’ve been living here. The waiter Gorgio is amazingly attentive. I highly suggest the house wine(white or red doesn’t matter). The menu is kosher so it’s split by meat dishes and cheese/dairy dishes. I mixed. My friend and I split the cacao e pepe(which was amazing as it looks it photographs) and the meatballs. I also tried the seafood risotto and gnocchi. THEGNOCCHIWASOUTOFTHISWORLD. I’m coming back just to order it! Nice restaurant in the Jewish Ghetto only downside was its secluded location.

If you find yourself in the Jewish Quarter, I have only three words for you… fried Jerusalem artichokes! You really do have to try them when you’re here.

Excelente comida!

Authentic Jewish /Roman cuisine. People are super friendly there and hear this! They have tap water! I do not need to pay for the water. Anyways, the artichoke, as other foodie has recommended, it was well-crafted and yummy. The staff also recommended the yummy pasta. I just luvvvvvvvvvvvvv Truffle! with a glass of wine only 3.5 Euro. Super nice experience. Good for one person meal!

One of mine and my husbands favorite meals from our 2 week trip to Europe was eating at Nonna Betta. We started off with the Jerusalem fried artichoke. Even though we are both not usually big fans of artichoke, this was delicious with its fried texture and it just melts in your mouth. We should have gotten another one instead of sharing! The main draw of course is the pasta. All of the pasta is fish made and tastes delicious– you will be spoiled and not want to eat boxed pasta again. I got a beef stew pasta in red sauce that was phenomenal. The beef was perfectly cooked and the sauce was flavorful and comple, enter the dish perfectly. My husband had a seafood ravioli that was also delicious, the best ravioli he has ever had! There is a table charge, I believe 2,00 or 2,50 per person, which I was not aware of until we got our bill. However, this meal was top quality and for the price you won’t find anything better!

Great resto in Jewish ghetto. Felt like I was eating a home cooked meal. Their house wine was excellent. Everything was awesome. Recommend the nonna Betta appetizer dish, it won’t disappoint !

The Jewish Quarter is lovely and this is the best spot in it, according to locals. Jewish artichoke is a must try! We had a delicious lunch here. The fried zucchini flowers here were tops. I also loved the fish Nonna Betta style.

Best food in Rome. Came here off travel channel number one pic and I was very pleased. Try the artichoke lasagna it’s to die for and don’t leave without ordering a famous fried artichoke.

Nonna Betta was recommended by a couple of food blogs. Make sure to utilIze your google maps when you maze around the beautiful side streets of Rome. We ate an late lunch or early dinner like true tourists. Eating dinner so early is unheard of in Italy. — Fried Artichoke. Don’t know what the fuss is here but it’s a fried artichoke. Tastes like anything that’s fried. Dark rich burnt taste. Good but not great. — Fried pumpkin flower. I liked this one. I think they stuff it with some cheese or sauce before frying. — Carbonara. Nice firm noodle and the taste was good. Didn’t wow me. — Tripa Romana — this tripe in the house made tomato sauce was banging. Def get.

Great food, okay service, and kinda pricey. This place was hyped a lot by many, including Anthony Bourdain so I went with my boyfriend and 1 other couple while we were in Rome. We were seated in the basement, which wasn’t ideal, but okay considering it was Christmas Day and we had to convince them to fit us in for a last minute reservation for 4 people(myself, my BF and another couple). For the starter we ordered 2 fried artichokes to share which was really good. We all ordered pasta dishes, which did not disappoint. The pasta is very fresh! The other couple ordered cacio e pepe(which they seemed to like). My boyfriend ordered the ravioli with seabass, which he really liked as well. However, my dish I think was by far the best on the menu. The pasta with artichoke sauce is unbelievable! Although a very simple dish, it was absolutely fantastic! I think they had a special holiday menu on(we went on Christmas Day) since it was a different menu from their website. We got a tasting dessert platter which was just okay considering the 9 € price tag(we got two plates for the table). We ordered the house wine(white) which was approx. 14 €(not bad in comparison to the other wines on the list). Service was good but nothing exceptional. What annoyed us is that they brought us bread to the table(without us asking for it! and then charged us for it on the bill! If we had known, we wouldn’t have eaten it. It was about 108 € between the four of us, which was more expensive than we would have liked, but not horrendous. Overall a good evening out.

This Jewish ghetto restaurant has had its moment in the limelight, Anthony Bourdain eat there when doing his show No Reservations at this place and the restaurant next door. I highly recommend making a reservation. Nonna Betta makes upscale traditional Italian Jewish food, which is a mouthful to say. One dish that I loved and I think no one should leave Rome without eating is Artichoke Jewish style. This is something you will see on every table in the restaurant, because artichoke is a theme that is in a lot of these dishes and it is just a good dish. Nothing fancy, just shaved down artichoke that has been flatten on a cook top. Now for tradition dishes I’m not looking for a complexity of flavors layered in every bite. I’m looking for a dish that is amazing in its own right with history and feels comforting. Recommended to me was the lamb and artichoke pasta, and with the first bite, I see why. The pasta was perfect; the flavor was mouth watering and in had to hold myself back from eating too fast. Our waiter and the rest of the staff were amazing and deserving of a tip. I know that people say you don’t tip in Europe but that isn’t true. If service meets or exceeds your expectations it is alright to tip. They will try and refuse the money but they are being nice. So if you feel that you had great service don’t be afraid to show it. I hope you have as great of a time as I did, enjoy!
