My review comes from the point of view of a first-time visitor to Rome. Found the Hotel Stendhal at Costco Travel that has done a pretty good job in the past of vetting quality lodgings, so was expecting a great experience And a great experience I was able to find, Location. Admittedly, central Rome is not a big place. But this hotel, off of Piazza Barberini, seems to be right smack in the middle of it all. The Piazza is a tourist site in and of itself — its nice to wake-up with a Roman fountain just outside your door. There are literally dozens of restaurant just outside your door featuring all kinds of cuisine. Major tourist sites like the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain are within 10 minutes walk from the front door. If you’re willing to walk further, the Roman Forum and Colloseum are within reach. The Vatican was less than a 10 Euro ride one-way by cab. If touring, staying at Stendhal effectively makes your vacation longer as there is almost no transit time to erode your fun time. Stendhal, is, however, very much a boutique hotel. The rooms are not big and wont fit much more than a couple — and even then you would be crowded. If you pack heavier than most, your bags wont fit in the same elevator as you. There are no real services in the hotel outside a basic breakfast and a hotel attendant. If your preference is a 200 – 300 sq ft American style hotel room with a large selection restaurant and bar, this isn’t the place to book. But all in all, the limitations of the hotel is part of the charm. After all, I didn’t come to Rome to have the same experience I would on a trip to Chicago. Staying at Stendhal was as much a part of the holiday as it was wandering around the cobblestoned streets in an ancient city.

I would have rated this hotel higher but I came with greater expectations. The reviews have been great but the experience was mediocre. The rooms are unexpectedly small. There is only one elevator and we waited over 10 minutes this morning just to bring our luggage down. The reviews spoke highly of the breakfast here but it was quite lacking. Our first day, we came down thirty minutes before closing time for the breakfast and they ran out of bread. So the next time, we came at 9am and they still ran out of bread — that’s 1.5 hours before breakfast is to end. What do they give you when they run out of bread, you ask? It looked like a processed hot dog bun. However, the staff here was very friendly and attentive for the most part. For the price we spent at this hotel, we simply expected more.

Read reviews that said this hotel was noisy, but ours was pretty quiet. We were in an interior room so, not sure about the others. Room is small but apparently many are in Rome… Interesting to note they had two desks/workstations and lots of outlets! The shower was awesome! The rooms are cozy, the breakfast looked pretty good for free, but we had plans elsewhere so did not try. Pretty close to everything except the Vatican which is more like a 40 min walk. Customer service was average, not bad… Firm beds which I like, the sheets were arguably in need of improvement(softer). Good décor and nice wine bar right across the street. Fast free wifi and Internet downstairs. All in all a fair price for a hotel of this rating in Rome.

What a lovely hotel in the heart of Rome. The concierge is always very friendly. The rooms are updated and clean, as well as the bathroom. There is a free breakfast buffet(not a huge selection but ok) and free wifi in the rooms. The people working here are very attentive. Would recommend this hotel to anyone traveling to Rome.

This is a nice hotel. The rooms are small, as are most in Rome. The bathroom in our room was really nice. The bed was the usual European firm bed. I really would like a softer mattress, but I’m not going to get one. Sigh. The lounge on the first floor was really lovely. We enjoyed having snacks and drinks down there. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Overall, I would highly recommend this place. One thing to note, the rooms face the street, so if you are a light sleeper, bring ear plugs.

Great location, between Fontana de trevi and Spanish steps, just in the corner of «Piazza barberini»…upscale neighborhood, with great restaurants and fine design boutiques! Free WiFi, staff extremely helpful, nice breakfast… Down side… room side and shower… Way to small for a «large frame«couple…LOL If you really come to this exciting city to enjoy most of you time out and like the convenience to stay in a walk distance great area… Considered this option! I hope this info could help you in a close future!
