Vera Pelle Schegge

This was our second trip to Rome. I had heard that Italian leather was the best but did not find anything that I liked on our first trip a few years ago… Well, I checked Unilocal and found Vera Pella Schegge. It only had one review but the shop was within walking distance to our hotel so I thought I would give it a look (it’s a 5 minute walk from the Spanish Steps).
Best leather shop I have been to EVER. Alex helped me and his sister helped my wife. Alex was very knowledgeable about leather, the tanning process and the manufacturing process. I was later to learn that this is his family’s shop and that they have been in the leather business for decades.
I was looking for something specific, a high quality leather jacket that would last me for many years. We had been to several stores but I had not seen what I wanted. My wife was getting a bit annoyed but I wanted what I wanted and after over 16 years together she puts up with me when I’m on a mission like this :-)
They have a great selection of jackets, bags, and shoes, and the quality is better than anything I have found in Asia or the US. But the best part was when I finally found a jacket in the style I liked (Classic Blazer). I asked Alex if it came in a specific type of natural hide and pointed to a different style jacket on the wall and he said, «No, but we can make one special for you.» I only paid the difference in the cost of the leather. (I chose Nabuk Cuoio leather which was the most expensive they had). Alex measured me for the jacket and even added two zippered inside pockets. My wife got a beautiful black leather mid-​legnth coat and a leather bag. My custom jacket arrived after 4 weeks. It looks and feels great.
My advice is to look around at other places and decide what you want. Then go to Rome and see Alex at Vera Pelle Schegge and he will make sure that you get what you want even if he has to have it made specifically for you.
