When In Rome Tours

For our recent family trip to Rome, we knew that we needed to get guided tours set up ahead of time, especially for the Vatican tours. The choices online are numerous, and most get good reviews. When In Rome Tours was recommended by a family friend and we are very glad to have used them.
For our family of four (two parents, one teen and one child) plus additional family of two more adults, we chose the When In Rome Package that includes transfers to and from our hotel plus the Vatican tour plus the ancient Rome tour. What a treat! It was doubly nice with the 20% off online coupon offered by the company during the winter season. Be sure to check for this.
Normally this package includes transfers to and from the airport to your hotel, but we arrived via train to the Termini train station. Robert Coghlan, the Operations Manager of When In Rome Tours personnally worked with us to make sure all of our arrangements were just right, and his staff picked us up at Termini station on time and delivered us as promised. Yeah, I know that it was a much less expensive transfer run for them to go to Termini than to the airport, but the convenience was well worth it!
Our guide for the Vatican tour was Luigi, and we really enjoyed him! He really had his hands full on our tour given the exceedingly large crowds at the Vatican during the holiday season. Our 3 hour tour turned into a whopping 5 hrs due to the crowds! Luigi was fantastic keeping us together, keeping us engaged, and keeping track of the non-​english speaking family that should’ve been assigned to another tour group! Luigi’s passion for the Vatican museum, the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s and the catacombs was fantastic, and his knowledge was amazing. We highly recommend Luigi! Just don’t go during the Christmas/​New Year’s season… the crowds were overwhelmingly large.
Our guide for the Colosseum and Ancient Rome tour was Sarah, and her knowledge of the subject was fantastic, even for a ex-​pat from the US! For an early morning tour, her wit and humor was a welcome side note, and her patience with us continually asking «wait, now when was this built?» was very welcome. Sarah worked hard to make the tour exciting and interesting for all ages on the tour, from age 9 to over 50. Our kids both said they really enjoyed this tour — the history was really «in your face» and personalized. Sarah also leads some of When In Rome’s culinary tours, so her restaurant recommendations were greatly appreciated and spot on. We highly recommend Sarah!
Finally, When In Rome worked with our group of 6 to make sure that our transfers to the airport were well coordinated given the two different departure flights and times for the group. Our two groups were picked up on time and delivered without problem to the airport.
