Naval Station at Sigonella

Wow, just wow! Now honestly Unilocal fam I didn’t know what to expect just coming here. Let’s just say I had expectations and boy were they exceeded in a major way! This place is beautiful and the palm trees all around base are a very nice touch playah. Lord now don’t y’all get me started on the awesomeness (That is a real word) of this location in conjunction to the food places around it. Now I wont go and spoil any future reviews but this base has got it goin ON! I’m talking about all of the amenities you need to make happiness happen if you know what I’m saying. Movie theatre, game rooms, bowling alley, and a bar (Good thing drinking age is 18 here for all of you young ones out there.) The Navel Exchange and Commissary are mall sized and if you can’t find what you’re looking for then you’re not looking hard enough or you just don’t need it! The area all around base is beautiful now you do get the occasional goat crossings about 40 or 50 but its worth the life experience and could make a good story for those who know how to tell it. Also what a fun area for friends and good times! The people here are nice and very friendly the place looks amazing and the food… I need to have a seat. Haha come on down to Sicily! I could use the company and you could use the scenery fam! Until next time!!!

What a nice Navy base this is. Has some history and some modern touches. Being Retired Navy it is always a pleasure to visit one of our bases. The base is well kept and laid out pretty good to in comparison to many bases in the US. The have a really nice Commisary and Exchange which a large considering it is an overseas base.
They have a really nice food court which has some local flair and some US base vendors. The food court was well maintained and clean with plenty of seating. I enjoyed the little snack I got from a local vendor as it was pretty tasty and a decent price.
I look forward to my next visit to NAS Sigonella. The sailors and civilians serve with pride and keep our interest at home and abroad safe and secure. Go Navy!!!

I spent a significant part of my life at Naval Station Sigonella. I will say that when I originally went to Decatur Elementary for 2^nd-​4^th grade, the base was a bit outdated and it had a very different feel to what it currently is like. The current base is an incredible change from the previous manifestation. All new buildings, excellent amenities, the school is huge… I am actually somewhat envious of the people who live there now, as they get a world-​class education in one of the most fascinating places on the planet.

If you’ve ever been to Hickam with the quaint architecture of the 1940s and palm trees swaying in the wind. that’s what you’ll find here. It’s a tucked away hidden gem like a small village waiting to be discovered. A snow capped Mt. Etna was the perfect backdrop that framed this lovely «village».
Everything is within walking distance. Commissary and Base Exchange are in the same building which is nice when the weather is chilly like today.
You will find all the goodies you get back home like high-​end cosmetics, designer handbags and in addition local artisan decorative pottery and gourmet foodie gifts and wine. The nice thing is that wine tastings are here daily!
Pistachios are very popular here and you will find them in most dishes at all the restaurants. Here you can find pistachio fillings in cakes, cookies, candies, dips and breads.
The ITT (ticket office) can be found here too and my goodness what a fabulous calendar of events they have! Come here to sign up for pre-​arranged tours and activities. A few I saw were a Sicilian Holiday Cooking Class, Antique Train ride around Mt. Etna, Orange Harvest and lunch, Tour and wine tastings, Nativity Scene and Puppet Show, a Spa Day at Hotel Olimpio, Tours of Castles, Piazzas and churches, Catania City tour and my favorite the Godfather Tour in Palermo!
Additional acitivities include a fun run/​walk and family hikes of Mt. Etna.
A movie theatre is here too with only $ 4 tickets for adults! Showing the latest releases! Today at 5 p.m. you can see Rise of the Guardians and The Hobbit will be featured here too!
Hospital available on premises as well.
A family fitness center provides kid friendly excersise machines so the whole family can workout (wow what a concept).
The Bowling Alley provides family fun nights. Library here too with café.
The commissary is small compared to those back home. One thing you will have to know is you must weigh and label your own produce before taking it to the cashier. A shopping cart costs a euro to use. A food court is found adjacent to the commisary where you will find pizza, Burger King and Subway.
USO Tour brought American Idol former contestants Diana Degarmo, Ace Young, Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders and Denver Bronco’s Peyton Manning.
We walk to the base daily so kids can play on the playground and enjoy a treat. We buy our groceries here too and I’m enjoying the simpler quieter time we have instead of driving in traffic like we do back home. Here, we just walk home with groceries in tow enjoying the crisp Sicilian country air!
