Canal Grande

Venice, Italy is an amazing world city! With culture, history, flair, romanticism… a must visit in Italy. The Grand Canal is a landmark in the city. It’s a short walk from San Marco Piazza. If you are lucky, you will have a gondola ride on the Grand Canal!

I always had a dream of being on a boat and whipping it around along the Grand Canal in Venice, and this spring I made that dream come true!
When I 1^st told people I was headed to Venice, most of them said eeww the canals are dirty and the water smells, but I didn’t find that to be true at all. Maybe it was because it rained when I came into town and then everything just cleared up and looked beautiful.
Took many walks along the canal and I rode on the Grand Canal by water bus, private boats and gondolas, each providing great views!
Take a private tour along the canal, you won’t regret it.

Cleanest city I’ve seen in a while. Desite the pooch population, I didnt see any piles of poo. And not a single cat in sight. The Venetians keep their city spotless and it’s sich a pleasure to walk around and not see evidence of filth. Saw one piece of grafitti, bit even that was pleasant.

This is the freeway of canals in Venice, you will see a lot of traffic on the waterway as you pass by. Taxis and boats as well as some gondolas fill the canal which runs through the city. It’s great to sit back and enjoy some wine and a pannini as you enjoy the sites of the canal. Lots of nearby eateries and bars too.

Ah the Grand Canal. It’s even more beautiful in person than in pictures. People have told me that the Canal really smells. Well no kidding, but I’m sure they have not been to the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn. This does not compare to that dump. Since there are no cars or buses in Venice, the Grand Canal is the main mode of transportation. You can take the vaporetti (water taxi) to different parts of the island or you can just simply walk it. Let me just say the water taxi here are not like speed boats. No they don’t speed. They slowly drift along the canal. Gondolas are also everywhere as this island is famously known for. After coming here, you really start to appreciate not having car traffic around.

Venice is where my fiancé proposed! This is the most romantic city in the world! Once you get inside the gondola it feels like you are in a movie. I recommend to do this in the evening when it is not so hot. We also went in July! We spent 3 days here and this is a must!

Canal Grande (aka: the Grand Canal) is Venice’s «major highway». Since there are no cars or bikes allowed in Venice the Grand Canal all of Venice’s major traffic takes place on this body of water. You will find boats, private water taxis, water buses (vaporetti), and gondolas floating along the Grand Canal. The canal cuts through Venice, making it possible to get from the train station to St. Mark’s Square in less than thirty minutes.
Some of the prettiest photos I took in Venice were along the Grand Canal. Be sure to take the vaporetto at least once for beautiful photo opportunities!

Just awesome
Absolutely lovely for one of the «main roads» in Venice to be water as opposed to pavement. One morning I was even sitting in a little bit of traffic. Boats were making their way down, and not a horn to be heard.
If you are there, take a vapretto ride along sunset. The views are picturesque enough to be on post cards.
Be aware that gondolas are extremely expensive. I did not ride any, but I found vapretto to be reliable, and from the front or back of the boat the views are great.

We spent three days in Venice and were captivated by the canal which is so vibrant and alive. Not to mention we were always greeted by the friendly locals and vendors. The best way to explore Venice is by taking the ACTV ferry boat. The two days unlimited travel card is available at the train station or certain ferry spots for 30 euro per person. There are plenty of places to eat and drink and sometimes the wines and beers are cheaper than fruit juices. Absolutely memorable experience! We love every minute of it.

Boat tour is awesome. The ticket are fairly cheap and they take you up and down venice to view their watery scenery. Don’t get sucker into doing those expensive and shitty gondola ride.

Quite an experience seeing all this area we did a couple tours to see everything very expansive. The gondola were something to see just the the experience

A unique spot in the world you must see at least once in a life time

JUST AMAZING!!!
We only spent two days in Venice but we took advantage of each moment. Long rides around the island, and to other islands. We bought a package deal for the transportation.
First day we had sun, second day it rained, and rained yep you guessed it rained some more, it was mid October. being able to see the buildings from the water, all the colors. in day, in night at sunset. It is all just BEAUTIFUL.
It was not stinky like people say, maybe a little. but not bad at all.
My fiancé even dipped her foot it, keep in mind she had some rain boots on! haha.
A place of Love. It’s romantic.

It is definitely a place of love. If you dont fall in love here… you dont deserve to fall inlove at all!!! Lol. Joke. Its great. The canal is their mode of transportation and see you why! Definitely better driven than the cabs of New York!
Definitely look into doing the day passes… you really dont know how many times you are going to get on and off.
Be mindful of where the stops are… which side of the canal.

Eines der «Muss-​man-​gesehen-​haben» in Venedig. Mich wundert immer, und auch hier, wieviel die Touristen an Historischen Wissen hier in die Beiträge bringen. War es nun schön oder nur historisch.
Also ich fand es zu jeder Tageszeit interessant, war gefühlte 30 male hier an einem Wochenende im Juli 2015, davor schon mal im Juni 200x.
Vor 9 Uhr und nach 17 Uhr ist es am schönsten, von der Sonne her, aber auch der weniger Touristen wegen.
Das Vaparetto verschiedener Linien bringt den Blick vom Wasser aus, die Brücken etwas erhabener von oben. Es gibt viel sehenswertes in den Details, aber auch eben schon recht kapute Häuser, neben total sanierten Tempeln. Wunderbar.

There is something magical about the Grand Canal, especially on a summer’s day when the sky is clear blue and the sun is hot. The water almost sparkles and the gondolas, water buses and water taxis zip up and down. The best part is sitting on the side of the canal with a gelato. Perfect.

The Grand Canal in Venice is fantastic to float on and having been the backdrop for many a movie over the years it felt quite surreal to be on it, just bobbing down from each house slowly getting swallowed up by the rising sea levels each year.
The best tip I can say is that if you want to get a good view of everything at a fairly reasonable price is to get public transport boat which you can get from the main train station or around 15 other spots down the river/​canal. It’s super cheap and for around 8 euros you’ve got a 60 minute pass that will get you down the other end of town.
A very stunning city and a truly unique place to be on the planet, if you’re eating here I’d recommend getting to some back street places as opposed to eating on the canals — everywhere is so touristy and rammed that it’s best to hit the back quieter streets!

Als ich im März 2015 mal wieder in Venedig war, gab es strahlendes Sonnenwetter und das Wasser im Canal Grande hat wundervoll geglitzert!
Wer am Piazzale Roma ankommt, dem kann kann ich nur raten: Kauft euch ein Vaporetti (Wasserbus)-Ticket und genießt die Fahrt auf dem Canal Grande! Allein auf der Fahrt werdet ihr links und rechts unzählige Fotos schießen und vorallem im Sommer weht eine angehme Brise.

I absolutely love Venice! It gives such sense of freedom! When I was there, I thought I was the happiest person on earth. :)
This place is unique! The traffic is amazing — the Canal is full of gondolas and other boats. I wonder how they even manage to exchange there. And their parking skills are incredible! Wow!

It really is magical. I don’t know of a similar opportunity to be welcomed to a city so perfectly. We took a private water taxi (so worth it!!) from the airport, and it was like our own personal tour of the Grand Canal heading to our hotel.
As your brain wraps itself around the fact that you’re seeing all these incredible buildings and bridges in person, and yet somehow they look like every picture you’ve ever seen in a magazine or online.
The canal is full of the hubbub of real life, reminding you that real people live and work here to provide you the opportunity to visit their beautiful city. And you also see so many other tourists just like you– trying to take it all in and savor the moment.
We opted not to do a traditional gondola ride, as it seemed pretty hokey and overpriced, plus we didn’t really need it after our water taxi cruising. The Grand Canal is a sight that can only be seen to truly believe.

It’s the life blood of Venice. It flows though the city taking everything you imagine from tourists to workers from beer to cabbages to their ultimate destination.
There ain’t a point on the canal that is not worthy of a picture. You will find your camera permanently in your hand ready to snap scene after scene of fairytale postcards.
People give mixed views about the gondola ride, but I did it a few years back and I loved it. Barter with the dude doing the rowing and get a good price. Then sit back and watch in amazement as he takes you down the grand canal and then off down the small side canal expertly negotiating the small sharp turns.
Grand canal will be hard to miss on your visit and I would be massively shocked if you are not left feeling impressive.

Très souvent considéré comme la plus belle avenue au monde, bien que dans les vraies termes ce soit en fait une voie d’eau naturelle, le grand canal constitue l’artère principal de Venise.
Un bon moyen pour profiter pleinement de la balade est d’emprunter un vaporetto, depuis la Piazzale Roma et en direction de la Place Saint-​Marc. Le long des berges, nombreuses sont les magnifiques résidences et palais a border ses rives. Celles ci étaient autrefois habités par les grandes familles vénitiennes.
Sur le chemin, quatre ponts sont traversés dont le fameux pont du Rialto. Les autres se nomment pont de l’académie, pont de la constitution et pont des déchaussés. Naviguer de nuit propose une expérience différente car on peut ainsi voir les intérieurs illuminés des bâtisses.

Der Canal Grande ist mindestens genauso bekannt wie der Markusplatz und die Rialtobrücke. Denn an letzterer führt er direkt vorbei. Hier verkehren so gut wie alle Hauptverkehrslinien der Vaporetti und egal ob Tag oder Nacht, man kann von hier aus wunderbar alles «wichtige» sehen. Eine Vaporettorundfahrt lohnt sich so oder so, egal ob direkt durch den Canal Grande oder außen rum :)

Der Canale Grande ist einmalig. Es gibt andere schöné Städte, die sich eng mit ihrem ganzen Leben an Flussläufe oder Kanäle schmiegen und dabei einen eigenen Charme entwickeln, San Antonio in Texas ist so ein schönes Beispiel. Doch das Zusammenspiel einzigartiger Architektur, der Geschichte der Stadt und der dann doch ganz normalen und zentralen Verkehrsader — das ist einzigartig. Der grosse Vorteile des Canales heute: Es stinkt nicht mehr zum Himmel. Meine Wahrnehmung meines ersten Venedigbesuchs vor 40 Jahren — diese schöné Stadt stinkt. Tut sie glücklicherweise nicht mehr.
Der Canale ist eigentlich kein Kanal, es ist der natürliche Lauf des Mündungsarms des Flusses Brenta. Von den Ufern des heutigen Canale an wurde Venedig befestigt. Am Canalazzo (eine Wortkreation aus Canale und Palazzo), wie ihn die Venezianer nennen, stehen die prachtvollsten Villen Venedigs. Der Canale selber ist etwa fünf Meter tief, vier Kilometer lang und zwischen30 und 70 Meter breit — vier Brücken überspannen den Canale — die bekannteste unter ihnen ist eines der venezianischen Wahrzeichen generell — die Rialtobrücke. Auf dem Canale herrschen strenge Regeln — die Geschwindigkeitsbegrenzungen variieren zwischen sieben und elf Stundenkilometern je nach Bootsart. Überwacht wird die Geschwindigkeit von der Polizei — es wird geblitzt.
Die Häuser entlang des Canales gehören nicht mehr den alten Kaufmanns– und Adelsfamilien, die sind mittlerweile meistenteils verarmt. Stattdessen sitzen die international tätigen üblichen Verdächtigen hier — Banken, Versicherungen, internationale Konzerne — denn nur sie können sich die Pflege der alten Gebäude leisten. Und dies ist auch das grosse Problem — einige Häuser sind nach mitteleuropäischen Vorstellungen baufällig und der motorisierte Bootsverkehr setzt den Gebäuden stark zu.
Gehört zu den Plätzen, die man in seinem Leben mindestens einmals gedsehen haben sollte.

Magnifique, splendide, magique tels sont les adjectifs que l on peut associer à Venise et à son grand canal.
En une bonne vingtaine de minutes avec un vaporetto (bateau bus vénitien), vous pouvez découvrir les grandes lignes de Venise mais rien né vaut de s y perdre plusieurs journées pour y découvrir les recoins tous plus beaux les uns que les autres.
La ville de Venise est telle que nous pouvons la découvrir dans de nombreux films.
C’est très romantique ! Vous pourriez vous arrêter toutes les 2 minutes pur y prendre une photo.
Seul hic: les restaurants sont d une piètre qualité. Les prix sont très excessifs pour un service déplorable. C est vraiment un attrape touriste mais difficile d y échapper. Pensez également à ajouter le prix du couvert dans vos calculs… Ce n’est pas automatique comme en France.

En Vaporetto et à fortiori en gondole une promenade sur le grand canal de Venise bordé de dizaines de Palais somptueux demeure un moment magique que l’on n’oublie pas.

Le petit tour en vaporetto m’avais bien plus et j’y serais bien resté des heures et ça change d’air connaissant les eaux de venise en pleine ville

vergesst das Gondelfahren und nehmt die Linie 1aber erst ab 18:00 oder ein Taxibootvielleicht nicht so romantisch wie eine Gondel, aber viel komfortabler.
Entdeckt den Canale Grande in der Abenddämmerung, wenn die Häuser beginnen zu Leuchten.

Grand canal, magnificent. Venice in a day or a week isn’t possible. You just have to come back!

Venedig ist echt überlaufen, aber es ist sehr schön.
Um den Menschenmassen zu entfliehen kann ich nur empfehlen mit der Gondel zu fahren. Es lohnt sich. Und für 30 Minuten ist es ein andere grandiose Welt.

When? Le jour, la nuit, l’été, l’hiver… je pense que l’on peut voir ce canal de façon différente chaque jour
Why? Parce que c’est la route principale de Venise, sa raison d’être
Who? Les habitants de Venise, dans les Vaporetto, voir leur quotidien… et se surprendre à rêver
What? La beauté des palais aux abords du Canal où on peut admirer la richesse de cette ville si particulière

Un endroit magique. On né se lasse pas de le monter, de le descendre en vaporetto à tout heure du jour ou de la nuit. Les dizaines de palais qui bordent le grand canal sont plus somptueux les unes que les autres.
A consommer sans modération.

Sehr beeindruckend und wunderschön, jedoch in der Hauptsaison viel zu voll und auch preislich kein Schnäppchen.

L’autoroute de Venise
Le grand canal traverse Venise et permet de relier entre elles toutes les parties de la ville. On peut prendre le bateau comme on prend le bus à Paris, il y a des arrêts tout au long du grand canal, depuis ce dernier on peut admirer les magnifiques palais venitiens qui le bordent.

Tout simplement magique !
Si le bonheur existe, il se situe nécessairement dans la remontée du Canale Grande. En vaporetto ou en riva (pour les plus riches), le trajet vous enchantera. Non cela n’est pas un parc d’attraction, c’est le plus beau concentre artistique de la planète et le remonter est carrément jouissif. La brise dans les cheveux, les yeux éblouis par ce soleil de l’est, admirez, l’instant est unique.

Les Champs Elysées aquatiques…
Venise et ses canaux, c’est comme l’Egypte et ses pyramides… Pour le Grand Canal, c’est le moyen de locomotion en plus d’être un enchantement. Les vaporettos font la navette entre les bateaux et les gondoles. Utiliser aussi les traghettos, c’est pas cher et sympa (2 euros pour traverser). Pour en revenir au Grand Canal, c’est effectivement les Champs de Venise. En l’empruntant on se rend compte de l’importance de la ville, de son architecture et de ses monuments. Passer sous le Rialto reste le summum !

Ma ballade préférée
Mon bonheur à Venise, prendre les vaporettos ! On découvre Venise sur l’eau et ce n’est pas ruineux. Si vous y aller un court week-​end, après un voyage en train et que vous arrivez le samedi matin, je vous conseille de commencer par vous perdre dans la ville à pied dans les petits quartiers où les touristes né sont pas trop présents et de prendre dans l’après-midi le forfait qui coûte 10 euros 50, qui est valable 24 heures à compter du compostage (et qui vous servira jusqu’au lendemain même heure) dans tous les transports en commun (sauf train). Muni de celui-​ci, prenez le vaporetto ligne 1 qui longe tout le long grand canal et n’hésitez pas à le faire plusieurs fois pour admirer la beauté des palaces qui le longent. Je vous conseille aussi les petites îles comme Murano (accessible également en vaporetto).
