Taverna al Remer WAS one of my wife’s and my favorite restaurants in Italy, but today, it sunk to the bottom of the barrel, and the barrel is coated with rotten fish. I can’t describe how excited we were to come back to Remer, but our meals were so bad, we just wanted to pay the bill and run away. Service was fine. The waitress offered us a tasting of red wines, which we found to be excellent and my wife picked a great merlot. That’s where the enjoyment stopped. The menu appeared to have changed in the past few years, and we were surprised nothing on it looked appealing. My wife ordered a pasta with fish sauce and yep, it tasted really fishy. I had pasta with beef, which was just OK for the price, which is not a bargain. So right off the bat, we were suspicious that things have changed. We sat next to a couple from Canada, and as they were leaving, I asked the wife if she enjoyed dinner. After a LONG pause, she finally offered, no and they will not be coming back. Then our main course arrived. I had ordered the monk fish and my wife ordered cuttlefish with squid ink. I attempted to cut a piece of monk with the side of my fork, and after several attempts, I opted to use my knife to cut it. It literally took six strokes of my knife to cut through the filet, and the fight to eat was on. Perhaps I should have requested a chain saw instead of a knife. Granted, my wife was being a bit adventurous by ordering the cuttlefish with squid ink sauce, but not only did it not look good, it tasted worse. We swapped dishes, and still found the monkfish to have the texture of a bicycle tire and the cuttlefish just plain bad. A LOT of food went uneaten. Fortunately, the weather in Venice has been great and the cicchetti bars are wonderful, but for the life of me, I don’t know what happened to Taverna al Remer, but we’ll never be back.

This was the best find! We went for happy hour both nights we stayed in Venice. You can take your food and drinks out to eat on the dock looking over the water. They had a really good wine selection and the buffet of appetizers during happy hour was very good. Great atmosphere and great staff!

My favorite evening in Italy was spent at Remer. I also don’t know how more Unilocalers haven’t found there way here, although perhaps some went and didn’t want to give away the secret? Let me start by stressing that in Venice, it is extremely difficult to avoid the tourist traps. Remer, tucked away via two strategically obscure passageways off of the Cannaregio-Rialto path, manages to avoid it all and delivers outstanding food along with really great live music. And it’s packed with Italians. Throughout the night, people were singing along, rocking back and forth in there seats, etc. When I called to make a reservation, they offered two seatings — 7:30pm and 9:30pm. I highly recommend taking the 9:30pm seating because the live music starts at 9pm. If you’re wondering, it was an Italian rock/jazz band, music was a split between American songs like«I just called to say I love you» and Italian songs that were great but that I didn’t recognize. We got the truffle ravioli as an appetizer, and it was perfect. My partner got a beef with balsamic vinegar and Parmesan dish for her main and loved it(I did too). I got a squid ink dish that was fine, nothing too special. But since everything else was pretty much perfect — and the ambiance a welcome rarity in Venice — I think that this spot is a must. Oh, you may want to dress up a bit. The Italian folks were wearing collared shirts and suit jackets, which I realize is pretty much standard dress in Italy — but not for tourists.(You won’t feel bad if you’re in tourist gear, though.) Finally — it wasn’t that expensive!

Excellent service and food. We had the shrimp and polenta, sea bass ravioli, and turbot. All were excellent. The tiramisu & another dessert I can’t remember were also both great. The live music was mostly English rock and folk songs. Everyone was very friendly and helpful, even though we can’t speak a lick of Italian. We didn’t have a reservation, but we lucked out and got there just in time — I would recommend a reservation.

Aperitivo with a view. This place is literally tucked away in a hideaway corner. It took us a good ten minutes to find it even though the GPS said we were right on top of it. The restaurant is at the end of the street, right on the docks. From 5 – 7, the doors were flowing with in-out traffic of people going for the small bites by the bar and bringing them out to the dock to sit and watch the boats and sunset. They had a great selection of bow tie pasta, risotto, and assorted toasts. Save your stomach and just got for the pastas; the toasts were a little on the drier end and didn’t pair too well with our spritz(5 €). The dock will be packed the entire time, so you’ll probably find yourself inching closer and closer to the water before snagging the perfect seat. Cheers!

Found this place tonight and was excited for a authentic Venice dinner for me and my family’s last night in Italy. The live music was great and the food was delicious, but the service was atrocious! The servers deliberately would not make eye contact with us and would not take our order or check in unless we flagged them down. Not sure if it’s because we are American, but it sure seemed that way. They also forgot drink orders and made several mistakes on the food we ordered. While the food was good, I would not recommend this restaurant, especially for Americans.

We absolutely loved the food here, both the bar staff and waiting staff were really friendly and helpful, but the live music could have been much much better, and we waited a very long time for a table — I would recommend booking in advance, this place really is a hidden gem if you’re looking for non-touristy food and great cocktails, and aren’t too fussed on a great band!

Spend $ 5 on drinks and eat for free between 5:30pm-7:30pmh! This place is well hidden and it took us some time to find. Once we arrived, we saw a large crowd hanging out in front of the restaurant socializing. Good sign. A good portion of the customers were locals, another good sign. Walked up to the bar and ordered a couple of $ 8 cocktails. Drinks were well made and not simply thrown together. Across from the bar was a table full of food, free for people who spent $ 5+ at the bar. There was pasta, bread with spreads, risotto, and other tasty items. Service was good in that they kept the trays full at all times. If you’re looking for a quiet restaurant with a romantic mood, look elsewhere. this place was busy and fun. Great if you want to socialize and chat up with a few strangers.

Before coming to Venice, I Unilocaled some places to go, and this was one that I wrote down. I read that it was hard to find but after a day of exploring in Venice, we were up for the challenge. We did eventually find it without too much trouble and I sure am glad we did! It is on the Grand Canal, but its not like you can see the water from your table, though it was a nice photo-op after dinner. We came for dinner, it was pretty crowded but we got a table right away. We were pleased to find that they had an English menu. We all ordered a different form of pasta and seafood meal. I personally ordered Seafood Spaghetti which was WOW, delicious, it was a spaghetti with a light sauce, with shrimp in the shell, clams, mussels and TODIEFOR scallops all on the plate. Some of my friends ordered a salad in addition to their meal, which was so large it seemed like it was a family style size(but was not advertised this way, maybe it was meant to be an main dish). It was a Monday, and there was a live pianist playing mostly American music which started around the middle of our meal, which we enjoyed. The service was OK, the waitress was not very attentive and I had to flag her down when I needed her a couple times. The price was also not terrible, but we did all drop about 30 euro each for the food and some wine.

I was pleasantly surprised to find this hidden location here on Unilocal! We rented the apartment next door, so it was an obvious choice for us as our greeter mentioned«happy hour.» Since most articles about Venice mention how expensive it is, we came prepared for expensive meals. Happy hour here is 5 Euros for food and a beverage(I paid the upgrade for a large beer). For 6 of us, the total bill was 33 Euro — cheapest meal so far in Italy. Full disclosure — the happy hour meal isn’t totally gourmet. It was however really good and filled up our family. It included pasta(excellent), polenta(also excellent), and a small selection of 4 bruschetta(good). Bottom line, if you need a quick snack and a drink, this is your place. For us, it was more than a snack, it was a meal. Enjoy!

Surprised more Unilocalers haven’t found their way here! I found Taverna while looking for«aperitivos» in Venice, and discovered their happy hour deal!(Note: this review is solely based upon my aperitivo experience here) So 5 euros gets you a happy hour drink and their aperitivo buffet(don’t eat too much — it’s technically a «pre-meal meal»?). What a great offer! There’s a cocktail menu as well if the happy hour drinks aren’t for you. We ordered spritzes and dined on the buffet offerings — food was pretty good despite the limited selection set aside for aperitivo and was refilled regularly. Would definitely recommend this place to travelers! Also, toilets are kind of unisexual with 2 private stalls? So expect a line during crowded hours. The place is also a tad hidden, so look it up online before making your way there if possible. I believe they also have live music during dinner time as well.

We ate here on the last night of our long honeymoon in Venice on the recommendation of Maximilliano, one of the staff members of our fabulous hotel.(The AD Place is by far our favorite hotel ever!) I’m so glad we were late for our original reservation at another restaurant that night or we would have missed this gem. We arrived sometime after 8 pm just before it got full. Perfect! The atmosphere is absolutely gorgeous. Exactly what I would imagine a romanic restaurant in Venice should be. A singer accompanied by a pianist on a Tuesday night in January was an unexpected treat! The clientele was mostly Italian which I find to be a great sign. The food was AMAZING. The mussel and clam starter was extremely fresh and flavorful. It was a huge portion that I didn’t think I would get through it, but trust me I did! The seafood spaghetti was so good I could cry at the thought of not having it again until we can return to Venice. My husband says his fillet in green peppercorn sauce redefined the meaning of melt in your mouth for him. The only thing lacking was that the service was quite pleasant but not particularly attentive. We waited a long time for our dishes to be picked up between courses and had to ask to order more drinks. When we got the desert menu no one came back to take the order so my husband ended up asking for the check instead. Had that not been the case this would have been an absolutely perfect evening!

I hate to say that this place is hyped up as the place to go for a local experience and supposed to be hard to find and in my opinion it’s neither. We found it in about 2 mins flat and it was full of tourists not locals ;-) I don’t really like places that offer a buffet for food but, more so dislike places that give you plastic plates and knives to eat it with. How is that supposed to make for a great cocktail experience ??? It just does not go together. It makes it feel like a neighborhood BBQ and should be free :-) The cocktail list is small and the host was almost unhappy to see us(a first in Venice I might add). They wanted us in and out and I am sorry that is not what we wanted. Reminded me of the experience I had once in an Italian restaurant in Starnberg and it all came flooding back :-) needless to stay we did not stay for long and won’t return :-)

Great atmosphere and location(off the tourist road). Service was fine but a bit rushed. I’ll call ahead to book next time. Food was okay to above average. Live music on a Monday night, which was a bonus.

One minute walk from Rialto(and 2 from my apartment) this is a huge favourite with my visitors. I’ve never been for the mega lunchtime buffet which is 20EUR for food and drink but the offerings at 17.30 for 4EUR: a very good spritz(or other drink of your choice) and a more modest buffet which can include leftovers from the more sumptuous lunchtime affair are extremely good value. Located at the side of the Canale Grande, it must be accessed from the streets behind. It can be hard to find I originally asked directions from a couple of locals who’d never heard of it.

If you’re not here for the happy hour, this place is just ok. We only ordered a pasta dish and they are REALLY skimpy on the«meat» portions. Prices are aligned with almost any other restaurant away from«tourist ground zero» areas which is to say it wasn’t a «great bargain». It is difficult to find if you don’t have a good map and therefore most«day tourists» will stay away. The atmosphere is cool. Lots of exposed real brick and appropriate lighting for dinner(not too dark or bright). Would I go back if I had a chance? No.

I really liked this place. The atmosphere is outstanding and you can be dropped off right out front by a gondola. The happy hour buffet was great. Locals seem to frequent this Tavern. Recommended!

Yo homies… This is the SPOT if you don’t want to drop mad €€€€€€€ to get your feed on. 1. It’s extremely hard to find. If possible, ask a mailman or a gondola guy for directions. I am 99.999999% sure you will not find it otherwise. 2. Go in hungry. For a mere 20 €, you can feast on ALLYOUCANEAT cured meats, various salads, bread, cheese, TIRAMISU! On top of that, they’ll include a custom pasta or rice dish. This price also includes bottled water and a carafe of either red or white wine, with coffee to end the meal. 3. Don’t rush. The staff is super chill, extremely laid back and extremely pleasant to be around. 4. Go as soon as they open! We were there at noon and had first picks of everything. After about an hour, all the tourists started rolling in. No bueno. Definitely recommended!
