Saitosakaba — this is the oldest izakaya, or Japanese bar, in Tokyo. It is in the Jujo area of Tokyo, just north of Ikebukuro and Itabashi stations on the JR Sobu line. Stepping into this bar is like taking a step back into history. Adjust to the smoky room and note the ambience of the place: the hostesses cater to a local crowd, and are friendly yet no-nonsense. No photos allowed here! The menu items adorn the walls, as is typical in izakaya. The food is amazing here — great little dishes ranging from croquettes, geso karaage(fried squid legs), various nabe dishes and snacks. Perfect drinking food! The perfect place to have a beer or some sake after work, and convenient to get to the station in time for the last train out 12:30am.
