«Warayaki» means that you grill things with burning bundles of straw, and surprisingly enough, that cooking method gives a nicely smoky fragrant to the meats and fish. This style is from a place called«Kouchi», a prefecture in south Japan. And it’s just amazing. Kouchi is also well known for very fresh, flavorful bonito, and their medium rare bonito dish is a must to try. You can hardly get bonito dishes of this quality at the very affordable price. Even Japanese fish lovers would be impressed by their bonito. What’s more is that Kouch does an excellent job in growing tasty chicken and their grilled chicken dishes are fantastic as well. Well, whatever they grill with straw, it’s just so good. You get to enjoy quality beef too. And for some reason, this place seems pretty popular for foreigners as well, and I see lots of them there. Some of the waiters/waitresses seem to be able to speak English and are used to dealing with non-Japanese speakers, they wouldn’t give you a hard time in ordering. They have an English menu too.

this is a different and delicious take on yakatori –rather than grill over coals, bundled straw creates heat and smoke, lots of smoke, that cooks the fish(mostly, some meats served) on the outside while leaving the center raw. The bonito was amazing this way, clearly the signature dish. The eel was wonderful too. Staff spoke some english, a fun experience. We dined here before heading to evening museum exhibits.

Cool and nice izakaya with English menu. It has a nice ambience with some taste of real Japanese izakaya so I took a lot of my guests here whenever they are in town. The MUST is katsuo(bonito) other than that the food is ok, the drink is fine. Price is a bit high but compared to other izakaya in the area it is still around the average

Very enjoyable, conveniently located. Highlights and recommendations include the grilled bonito, pond smelts and fizz drinks.

Warayakiya(わらやき屋) is located 4 minutes from Roppongi Crosswalk down the hill where there is Amando Café. Featuring foods from the southern prefecture of Kouchi, they grill their meats and seafood with burning bundles of straw, giving it a unique, smoky fragrance. The venue’s extremely fresh, flavorful bonito(1,280 Yen) lightly seared as well as the grilled chicken is a must. Rarely can you get bonito dishes of this quality at very affordable prices. During the warmer seasons, outside seating is available. Sake from 480 Yen a glass, cocktail from 500 Yen, beer from 580 Yen. Also have locations in Akasaka, Ginza, Tamachi and Shinagawa. English menu available.
