Chawan

To come to Chawan, you have to know what’s good. Their menu is littered with really bad stuff intermixed with the good stuff. Don’t order their cendul, it was the worst thing ever. I do like their soto ayam though.
Chawan is a pretty comfortable place to sit. Outdoorsey without being hot. Very local atmosphere too.
Would I go there again? Yeah, I would for the big local coffee menu and the soto ayam.

I’ve only tried their Cendol and it tastes like water, so if you’re thinking about ordering it, save yourself some money. The service is not bad though.

I went to Chawan a few months back with my friend for lunch as we couldn’t decide on a place to eat so we ended up here. I would describe Chawan to be a high-​end mamak restaurant. The serve a variety of local cuisine and a lot of Malay dishes along with local beverages as well. I did not order any food as I was full so I just got a drink instead. My friend ordered a Nasi Lemak set with a dessert on the side. I tasted her food and in my opinion, it was not as great as I thought it would be. Nothing to shout about. It is quite expensive for average quality food.
Also, the service is quite slow here as we had to wait quite some time to even get the menu although it was not crowded at that time. To sum up, I think this is an overpriced restaurant and I wouldn’t go back here at all. Did not interest me much.

When Chawan first opened in Bangsar it was a nice place to go for a bite to eat and good ambience. It still has nice ambience but the food quality hasn’t stayed the same and the prices are on the high side. I guess that’s to be expected for Bangsar though.
This place is aways packed though and I think that’s partly due to their location and the fact that they have decent snacks (the keropok lekor is yummy, I admit) and a good drinks menu. Service is quite spotty though, and on the few occasions I have been here, it took forever to get our orders taken and then for our food to arrive. I had their famous Nasi Lemak which was barely average. Like I said, the keropok lekor is their saving grace.
After eating here and finding it not to our satisfaction, my friends and I now frequent Restoran Berjaya around the corner instead.

From a lot of food places in Bangsar, this is a place where you don’t feel like spending much like in wonder mama or plan B but don’t feel like going to mamak like nasi kandar pelita or devi’s corner. They have a lot selections of food, from the light snack like pisang abu or pisang nangka goring (RM2.5), cucur udang (RM5), porridge of the day (RM3,5), toast bread with nut (for RM2), half boiled egg (for RM2.5) to heavy meal like nasi putih ayam manis for RM11.9, wantan noodle for RM10.9, nasik putih ayam masak kurma for RM13.9 and even like finger fish, mango sticky rice, cream caramel pudding, and so on.
Drinks are quite a lot to choose from as well like Kopi, Kopi ‘O’, The ‘O’, Lemon Tea, Honey Lemon Tea, ginger lemon tea, juices, and not to forget the cendol as well. I would still prefer the cendol in Babalow or Straits food company than this one.
I am not a big fan of a food place that just combines all types of food in one place. I believe it should always separated, so this definitely not going to be my favourite place unless I have to budget my dinner to not more than RM20.

As far as I know, there is another outlet at Publika, however the one I went to was the Bangsar outlet.
Located on the corner of Jalan Telawi 3 in Bangsar, it is not easy to overlook this café.
This is not your typical Malaysian fare, in fact you get much more than that! I had the nasi kunyit which was amazingly tasty and a good enough portion size to satisfy the tummy. My boyfriend went for the nasi biryani and according to him, the chicken was juicy and tender and the biryani rice was well cooked.
Staff were friendly and pleasant and knew just what to recommend us as it was our first time to this place. It gets busier later into the day and by dinner time the restaurant is packed with life so come earlier if you wish to avoid the dinner crowd but still want to enjoy tasty food in the area!
Definitely coming back here again in future. Prices were affordable too — the total bill with drinks came close to 50RM. The food quality and service was well worth the price tag.

I’ve been studying around the area for some years now, and Chawan is where friends and I hang out when we feel like we’re in the «kopitiam» mood. It’s kinda like a kopitiam, based on the dishes and drinks they served, just with a premium price to pay. Nevertheless, the quality is instilled pretty strongly here. What interests me most about this place is their types of coffee. They added a very local touch of naming the coffees with the states of Malaysia (Kopi Perak, Kopi Kelantan, etc.). Each has it’s own explanation, or if you want to enquire more, just ask the waitress, I got a good service during my visit.
Now for the food, I will only eat one dish here and that will not change. The Nasi Lemak Ayam Goreng. What so special? A super sized Fried Chicken Thigh that packs the most amazing spice and flavor in it. So tender and juicy, fried to perfect crisp, all the explanations are only limited to words, but taste one and you will understand. The Nasi Lemak itself is not bad, just that the portion of rice can be quite little if you’re a big eater. An extra tip, the 3 layer tea here is amazing too.

I’m a true expert of Bangsar area. Their restaurants, café’s and what not.
For half a year I would pass by this restaurant with sceptical look on this restaurant.
I have no idea why it took me so long to try it out. The name looks fancy, and it is very conveniently placed.
Finally there was a day when I decided to try it out. And I was surprised with what I found.
It is actually a mamak style place ! haha I really didn’t see it coming.
First it looked really fancy to me, but yeah it’s a fancy type of mamak i guess :)
You can try local good quality Malay food out there.
I am sure that you are going to make your tummy happy with their nasy goreng.

Chawan restaurant has a kopitiam style and it’s quite famous in bangsar.
I’ve you are a coffe lover you can try here the house signature which is a creamy and thick cappucino. Also their Kemamam coffee is quite alright and the most comforting part is that it was not overly sweet like most Malaysian kopitiam ones. What is funny about the place is the fact that they named all their coffee using the name of states and towns in Malaysia: Kemaman coffee, Ipoh coffee and Chawan Frappé
If you wanna have here a snack, I recommend you to try the fried bananas. They are served on a banana leaf and they have a golden brownish complexion.
For lunch you can try the Nasi Lemak chicken rendang (RM10.90). It’s pretty good.
Overall: the place is great for a coffee but not amazing in regards of the food.

Quite a smart name I would say. It’s been quite common recently to have unique spellings for adjective words. Like how Cantik is spelt Chantique at times, we have Chawan in Bangsar which is Cawan and translates to Cup in English.
Locating the shop is easy peasy. Serving a variety of Malaysian food at a reasonable price is their main attraction.
I joined a bunch of ex classmates for breakfast here on a weekend and surprisingly the place wasn’t that crowded, yet I assume.
Priced at café pricing level, expect to pay more than RM10 for a nasi lemak rendang ayam which rhymes with Yum!
What I found a little ridiculous was the fact that we were not allowed to read the newspapers displayed at the back. Silly no?
Serving size is a little too small for the price we paid.
I’ll definitely be back to try a cuppa! I noticed that they name their coffee based on the name of states and towns in Malaysia. Pretty interesting, yeah?

Chawan is one of those Sunday afternoon places you spend catching up with your friends over a cup of coffee (Cawan means cup in Malay) and that was exactly what we did last Sunday afternoon.
Instead of just having coffee, I decided to go against the norm and try some of the food. I opted for the slimming option, the Mee Kari (anything that you could slurp out of a bowl is slimming to me, but I could be wrong.) The noodle dish was spectacular but I wished the portion were bigger though, had to gulp down two of them just to reach my daily calorie count.
My friend had the Nasi Lemak, which I had a spoonful of, it truly was the taste of a really authentic Nasi Lemak which made my taste buds really happy. So go ahead and have a ‘cawan’ of coffee this Sunday, you wouldn’t regret it.
