Fancy with an unbeatable view, but not the best food we had in Sayulita. We were really excited to come to Calypso and planned to have a fancy date night here. We got all dressed up and were ushered into the gorgeous open dining area, and seated immediately at a table directly overlooking the town square. The restaurant was surprisingly quiet for such a lovely night in the middle of Easter. Our server was prompt and brought us some tasty margaritas. We ordered, Boyfriend had the fresh catch of the day — a whole snapper. I had prawn fajitas, as fajitas were the only Mexican food I hadn’t tried actually in Mexico yet! Boyfriend’s dish was exquisite. He asked for it simply grilled with garlic and it was really delicious, fresh, flaky fish with flavours that just shone through. Unfortunately my fajitas were only ok. The veggies and prawns were smothered in teriyaki sauce — an incredibly odd choice which was not what I wanted. I wanted authentic flavours and fresh seafood, and I could have had teriyaki at home. It also only came with two rolled up corn tortillas so I had to stuff them full then just eat the rest like a stir fry. Quite disappointing. We ordered the crème brûlée for dessert which was quite good, and Boyfriend had an excellent tequila. I wanted a mezcal, but our server wasn’t sure that they even had any, and I ended up with a mediocre one. On the positive side, the atmosphere is unbeatable — romantic and intimate, with the added bonus of feeling part of the action in the square because of the open air palapa. The service was also quite good, and the drinks are made with purified ice cubes which is good to know!
