We stayed at the Posada Luna Del Sur hotel in Feb at the recommendation of a friend who had previously visited the area. I believe the hotel has several things going for it even though it is not right on the beach. First off, it is not right on the beach. Sure it can be nice hearing the waves crash and all that. However, I feel you are missing out on so much by limiting yourself to that stretch of Tulum. The town has so much to offer for food, culture and nightlife. However, if you are looking for more of a resort atmosphere(with resort prices) this is not your hotel. The rooms are good sized. As big as any standard hotel room you get in the US while traveling. There is TV, some with English channels, a spacious shower and a kitchen with a ‘dorm fridge’, and a sink. Dishes and flatware are provided along with a 5-gallon water cooler that is refilled as needed. Breakfast was part of the room rate and it is served on the open air rooftop. In Feb. the mornings were chilly and the breeze kept the spot comfortable to hang out in during the day. Breakfast options are limited but they were all so good we didn’t mind repeating any of them. Wifi is available on the rooftop. However, keep in mind you are in a third-world town and speed and bandwidth are limited so come with your expectations measured. Keep in mind you aren’t here to do work or spend all day on Unilocal(or other social media pages… whichever of those people still use). it is handy to do a quick check-in with loved ones back home or a check of emails to make sure you home didn’t burn down the day before. The town of Tulum, in which the hotel sits, is fairly small and quiet. The group I was in never felt any kind of stalking, grifting, or other behaviors that made us feel uncomfortable. This includes a walk home from the bar after midnight. I wouldn’t recommend stumbling home as with any situation you need to keep your wits, but all the same, we were never hassled for handouts or felt the need to scurry back. Being around the hotel you hear the sounds of the neighborhood which makes you feel part of the area. There are MANY places to eat around town. Anything from NY Style pizza to more upscale dining. My favorite was the taco huts with the stack of meat the carve off(I forget the name). This would be considered a place to maybe be careful of as far as food safety goes but the 6 of us, plus other travelers we met never got sick from the street food. We liked staying in town and taking a cab to the beach in the morning. It gave us a mix of the culture of the area as well as the access to the beautiful beach nearby. We hope to return very soon!

Lovely rooftop to eat breakfast on. I stayed half my Tulum trip here and the remainder on the beach. This is located in the town, walking distance to food and the person who pushes around the cart with pastries. There was a fridge in the room, which was very nice to chill water and nibbles. Very romantic.
