A bit of a dump. That’s to be expected in Amsterdam. In fact, it’s why you’re here. The canal side seating is great on a nice day. But the service is spotty. And inside it is cramped and oppressive. I love a small dive bar but this just didn’t have the personality. Nothing wrong with it, just not a whole lot right. perfectly fine to stop and have a beer. If you’re a wine drinker, forget it(basically, forget Amsterdam). Not off-putting but also not welcoming. Just kind of… there.

While the service wasn’t great here– bartender was hanging out talking to her friends– once we ordered drinks, all was good. Service isn’t amazing because European service industry isn’t slaving away for tips like they are in the U.S. Good for the EU. The inside almost seemed on a smaller scale than usual, but it has a nice feel to it. Dripping candles, old library feel. Heineken tasted good– so the earth’s rotation came to a halt– I made my friend drink one here to convince her of this. Would come here again esp if it was a season to sit outside.

This is a great bar on the canals. The bitterballen is excellent there and they have a good beer selection.

Want local flavor? Go to this authentic Amsterdam café. This is where true Amsterdammers sing along with their favorite, mostly Dutch, songs. Of course they serve Dutch snacks such as bitterballen and kroketten which are excellent with a cold beer. The place is small so don’t bring too big of a crowd.
