Auckland, and in particular the North Shore, is blessed with wonderful public libraries. Each one is distinctive and has its own charms and ways of drawing you in. Taka, Browns Bay and Devo for example come with the added bonus of nearby beaches which make for lovely spots to take a book on a sunny day. Birkenhead Library on the other hand is all about the library itself — the town centre location and wonderful architecture/urban design which I believe has won it some awards. It’s located on a busy street corner just off Birkenhead’s main drag which is most convenient, and the architecture really is quite stunning for a library — it’s a neat mix of glass and wooden fins which look cool from the outside and give you lovely natural light and views from the inside. One of the neatest libraries you’ll find and has an excellent range of books, mags, CDs and movies.

You would be forgiven if you thought one library was the same as the next, but you would be far off the mark. I was in search of a few cookbooks the other day, so I thought I will stop at the library and get the real thing. Everyone knows that cooking from a recipe on an internet website just does not work.
The layout was so refreshing, and it was so easy to find the books I was looking for. I couldn’t believe that they had such a great movie collection. And it is a so cheap, who needs a video shop?
Kudos also go out to the staff, they were more than handy in helping me find the right cookbook for the job.

This the coolest design you will find of a library, and not only do I think this, but the architecture who designed it has won a NZ Architecture Award for Public Architecture and also other awards for sustainability and environmental design.
Home to a number of favourites, such as the Plunket Birkenhead Workshop, and the best children’s reading area, and outdoor play balcony I have seen yet. I appreciate that my child gets the freedom to walk around a kids zone, and have time outside inside of a library which is not common.
Stunning panorama if your in the need of some time out or inspiration while you write or read or study, on the upstairs level.
Exceptional librarian’s staff this library and are always keen to help me find a book, a movie or log in to the free Internet.
Take this opportunity to experience an excellent Auckland City Library.

This is definitely one of the best libraries I have visited in Auckland, it is modern and has the most awesome views of the city, I come here sometimes just to see the views they really are magnificent. The staff are also very friendly and helpful. I come here often to attend the Wriggle and Rhyme sessions which are quite good — more details on their website. Upstairs also has a little dedicated area for kids which is quite nice and an outdoor area so you can once again enjoy the views. In the same premises you will also find the Citizens Advice Bureau and Plunket. The library also has a cute little playground for the kids just outside.
