As the museum is in an area away from shops and Cafes, this café has a exclusive catchment. The crowds were out of the door when we had our pre exhibition nibbles. They have a fairly good choice of basic café hot and cold food. Beverages also available too. Our wedges were nice and hot, came with a small dishs of sweet chilli sauce and sour cream. The coffee were not bad as well. The staff kept the turnover of tables quick and efficient with removing used plates etc.

Stopped in here today after taking my daughter around the museum. Being the only place to grab a bite or a drink, it was of course quite busy. However my coffee of the day, being a gingernut latte was definitely not made by a barista. I ended up throwing it out! I got a chicken salad sandwich– which was fine to eat. But the fluffy i ordered for my daughter was barely a fluffy! I ended up having the fluffy instead lol. Better idea to bring your own food and eat it in the kai room(located behind weird and wonderful level 1 :))

Whilst at the Auckland Museum this is your only close option for a bite to eat and coffee, it is needless to probably say then, but they are quite busy! However, despite this the service was prompt and friendly. They have an all day breakfast with the usual fare and heaps of cabinet choices, including sweet treats(my friand was a overly sweet and dry, but edible). Coffee — so-so, vegie soup — pretty good, and chicken fettucine — nice, but the serving size was gone in three gulps, I think my coffee cup was bigger:( The museum is a great draw card for tourism, but the food and café overall didn’t impress in the same way, needs a unique touch to re-vamp it up I think. One of the up-sides is that they seemed to be well-suited for families with young children, basic food fare to keep lil’ one’s happy and plenty of space to move around.

The Columbus Café is the spot to grab a coffee, and a bite to eat after you have had a day wandering through the amazing Auckland Museum. Always a very busy spot; as its right at the back entrance of the complex. I usually just order a coffee and a quiche or sandwich at the counter, but you also have an option to order off the menu as well. If you have children in tow like I usually do, you have the option of the kid’s menu which they will love. The coffee I have to say would not be the best I have had, but it does the job. They have lots of seating inside and outside, the café in the atrium area, and it is very tidy. I like that because of how busy they are, you are guaranteed a fast coffee and meal within minutes of ordering. I would love to see the café perhaps incorporate more of a personality of the sophisticated museum it calls home.
