First off, loved the location. Close to the Craft & Fine Food Market, so swinging by this place after shopping on a Sunday afternoon was super easy. Also close to the beach area. I love the actual layout of the restaurant. There was a big table for big family-style lunches and some intimate sofa sets for small groups. I love that there’s a kid’s area at the back which really made my daughter’s day. She spent about half an hour there, which meant I could take my time eating. Food is a hit or miss. We order the spinach and feta quiche… not that amazing. Had beef lasagne, good that they use real tomatoes in the sauce but lacked the bechamel quality in the sauce, just a lot of cheese instead of bechamel, but to the serving size was pretty big. I was very happy with my NZ$ 4 spinach and bacon pastry. It was huge and savory, made quiet a good lunch meal for me. Cappuccino and strawberry milkshake were also pretty good. I’d come back to this place again but would choose my food wisely. Go with the pastry selection… after all, they are a bakery.

I’m not one to complain about a café and it does seem from all the reviews that this is quite the establishment in Devonport. However today when we went for lunch with our toddler the whole experience was lacking. For one, the staff were less than friendly — not making eye contact, not smiling and generally disinterested. There were a lot of options for food and the prices weren’t bad, but I was surprised that they wouldn’t make a toastie for my toddler. Most places will happily accommodate your needs. And I was more annoyed because this is hailed as a «kid friendly» establishment. There are a few toys at the back but I’d hardly rave about it based on that. To make matters worse, the toilets were in need of a good scrubbing. As I was taking my little one in, another young girl was refusing to use the toilet because it was dirty. Maybe it was a bad day… all establishments have rough days… But I’m disappointed we drove all the way out there. Can think of far more child friendly places closer to home.

Popped in here last Sunday morning for a quick bite to eat and the place was absolutely pumping. Every man and his dog seemed to be in there eating breakfast or buying takeaway baked goods. Despite the long queues, the wait was negligible. I think being jam-packed is a regular occurrence for these guys so they’ve got it down pat — plenty of staff, two tills… nailing it. The bakery itself is pretty big with plenty of outdoor seating lining the street. And the selection of food… Oh my goodness! Row upon row of baked goods, breads and sweet treats. Impossible to choose. Perhaps that is why I rookie’d out and ordered vegetarian frittata, which was massive but lacked flavour(S+P badly needed!) and was well overcooked. Will be back to try their pies soon.

A great selection of food and the cheese scones are fantastic. There is an excellent kids section at the back with lots of toys. Can be very busy on the weekends and a bit chaotic but the week days are much easier to negotiate with kids.

I was invited to a breakfast here yesterday. And I was surprised at the amount of food for the big breakfast. It was so much I couldn’t even finish the whole plate. If you have seen my other review photos. I pride myself of my massive appetite. But, it’s no match for the scramble eggs, toasts, grill tomato, fried mushroom, bacon, sausages and a steak on my plate at the stone oven. Not only it was a huge portion, it was also very delicious. So for the price, it’s 5 stars. Highly recommend anyone to go and check it out. Two thumbs up.

The Stone Oven Bakery and Café has a massive cabinet filled with delicious looking treats, that you can either enjoy to-go or sitting down at one of the tables inside. They also have a menu on offer, with the standard Kiwi lunch/brunch fare. We actually sat around the corner at Paua Café and Bar, which is currently part of the Stone House Bakery and has the same menu for now, but will be changing in a few weeks to separate ownership. The coffee was fantastic, with a great crema and a perfect temperature. Our meals were huge and we couldn’t even finish — we shared a plate of wedges and the vegetarian big breakfast, which had yummy corn fritters that seemed to be made out of fresh corn and came with a tasty relish on the side. Possibly the mushrooms were a bit over cooked, but other than that I have no qualms with this place — good service, great relaxed setting in Devonport and a good soundtrack in the background to accompany your meal.

I am always amazed by just how much is on offer at the Stone Oven Bakery and Café. As you enter, there is a giant cabinet full of all types of baked deliciousness. Then behind the cabinet you have your freshly baked breads, smelling delectable. Move further up and you’ll find the pie warmer full of bountiful sausage rolls and pastries. And then when you make it to the till, there’s a whole blackboard menu to peruse! By this stage you’ve forgotten what you saw in the first cabinet and have to start all over again. There’s lots of seating, the staff are friendly and overall, a great local community vibe. Located just off the main street, it’s a nice replete from the bustle of a sunny weekend day in Devonport.

The Devonport Stone Oven and Bakery is somewhat of an establishment in Devonport, I’m sure every single person in the community has at some point either worked here or sold here or maybe just rolled in on a Sunday morning for a late breakfast. At any rate its still cranking so they must be doing something right. Heaps of outdoor seating and this is the only café I know of with a relatively large children’s area armed with toys… possibly for the same reason might not be a favourite of those without children. Try the vegetarian hunza pie and don’t leave without a loaf of turkish bread.

With a name like Stone Oven Bakery and Café you would presume they only make and sell bread and pastries, however this Devonport Café has been around a good long time, and are known by the locals for their bread yes, but also for the great breakfast meals, brunch and appetizing lunch menu. Feels like the whole neighborhood has been here at some point in their lives, and you are treated like a local too even if you’re from another suburb, or even country which is fabulous. Lovely outdoor seating with full sun, which is where you find me any time I am in Devonport, I like the relaxed feel, good honest portions, and variety of the menu. They have fantastic fast service, you either grab your food at the counter whilst paying, or order of the menu and they will serve you at the table. A great café and very consistent over the many years I have visited.

The Stone Oven used to be my go-to when my friends and I all lived in the same area. the only reason we don’t still go as much is because we all moved further away. Life huh. Growing up sucks. Anywayyyyy, the Stone oven is everything you want in a Café. There are massive amount of bread in all different styles, pies, salads, sammys, croissants, pasta — and that’s just the cabinet food. All the usual suspects appear on the menu; eggs bene, mushrooms on toast, bagels, big breakfasts etc. And they’re all big and yum. And there’s fries, at breakfast time, which is great. The orange jucie is really good and pulpy and the drink selection is good. It’s always pretty busy, but there is plenty of seating inside and out so don’t worry. Place your oder, grab a drink and chill. It’s a good way to spend a morning.
