History

Established in 2001.

Founded in 2001 by Bill Nolan, the original Ding Dong Lounge first opened on the upper west side of Manhattan and slowly grew a following of talented artists, writers, actors and musicians.

Then in 2003 close personal friend Bill Walsh opened the Ding Dong Lounge in Melbourne, branding itself with a live gig atmosphere that has easily upheld the Ding Dongs furious rock reputation. And now in 2013 Mat Jorgensen and Damon Kenzo have been chosen to follow in the footsteps of its awe inspiring predecessors, pooling the incredible wealth of talent that New Zealand has to offer, and dole it out to the unsuspecting public.

Not sure what happened. Ordered a beer and then a few minutes later 80% of the bar just left… I thought I was being punked.

Ding Dong Lounge is an institution in New York and Melbourne, a place where people who go to New York come back with great stories about. Ding Dong in Auckland is definitely not such a beast. The reasons why become obvious when you see who runs it — the guy behind forte and deschlers, and some guy who is friends with Franko. Speaking of Franko, he dj’s here. So that should give you an idea of what the place is like. It’s full of 80’s throwback guys — long hair, tight leather pants, drinking expensive foreign brews and listening to Poison. I’m sure there is a target market that would love the place — but I definitely am not in it.
