History

Established in 1992.

John Belsham learned to make wine as a student living in the Medoc region of Bordeaux. Returning to New Zealand, Belsham was a winemaker for Nobilo, Matua Valley, Hunters Wines and founded Rapaura Vintners; the first contract winemaking facility in NZ.

Belsham founded Foxes Island Wines in 1992 to craft premium, single vineyard wines. Today the wines are produced from the Estate in the Awatere Valley, Marlborough, New Zealand. The Estate is a series of seven plateaus carved from the glacier period 40,000 years ago and is primarily planted to Pinot Noir.

The first wine produced was Chardonnay, followed in 1993 by Pinot Noir. A dry-styled Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc are also produced.

An Icon series was introduced with great applaud in 2013 with the release of La Lapine 2010, a white wine. Le Renard, an icon Pinot Noir will be released in 2014.

The vineyard and winery are certified as a NZ sustainable producer. The Chardonnay is grown organically.
