Drinking long blacks has taught me about good coffees and bad coffees as there is no milk to hide a poorly brewed coffee. This was one exceptional long black for a cool café on the backs streets of Ponsonby Good One They use Coffee Supreme and the barristers brew every coffee to perfection with extreme attention to detail. The big open spaced café with an industrial feel and super friendly and helpful staff make it a great place to sit and enjoy a coffee alone or as a catch up with friends

One of my all time favourite café’s in New Zealand! What makes it even better is that it is our local!(10 minute walk from our place and a few minutes from P road). Fantastic coffee(we buy the beans for our filter coffee almost every week), great pastries from Little and Friday, and awesome atmosphere. They have quite a unique décor which is semi-industrial embracing the concrete and exposed walls, yet the colours make it comfortable and homey. The flat whites are reliable; I have never had a bad coffee from here. I would have to say my favourite thing about this place is the coffee/doughnut combo. The doughnuts are the best I have had in NZ, and coupled with a black filter coffee is completely divine. The cinnamon/sugar doughnut literally melts in your mouth, and the black coffee is a perfect juxtaposition to the doughnut! dunking is also the way to go. Only downside would be parking. There is limited street parking. But instead, just walk!

I have never been to good one, but I have heard about them. When I got there, I fell in love with the whole we have spent money to decorate our shop to look like that we didn’t do anything to it look. I ordered my usual drink of latte, the famed creamed donut and the cinnamon brioche. When the pastries arrived before the coffee, I realised that they are made by Little and Friday. So of course they are good. Then, the latte arrived. In a very stylish glass. I took a sip, the bitterness of espresso hit me like Mike Tyson. Ewww, can I even say ewww here? I have not sampled supreme coffee before, but just this one cup has put me off the label all together. But if you like a strong bitter coffee, then it is perfect for you. Yes, I am not going to be popular amongst the die hard fans of the brand. But in my opinion, there are heaps more better roasters around Auckland that provides better quality coffee. And some of them even makes their own pastries.

The coffee was very good and the décor /atmosphere was fantastic. The donuts in the cabinet looked good but we didn’t try them. The service however was poor, it was almost as if we were invisible. There were no smiles or greetings or pleasantries such as please or thank you. We would go back for the coffee alone.

It was a big surprise to see the renovated interior of Good One. Space became huge and the interior with yellow highlights looked very sophisticated. They now have Little and Friday food which was another plus point. I ordered Chicken and leek pie(11.5) and despite its hefty price, it tasted wonderful. Best pie that I had for a long time. I came back a week after and tried Mince & cheese pie too, but it wasn’t as nice as the chicken one. Others also enjoyed their Fritata(10.5) and Chorizo tart(11.5). Of course I wasn’t gonna go anywhere without trying their famous cream donut(4.5?). What a heaven it was. What could’ve been a heavy cream was perfectly balanced with jam. Coffee was little bitter for me though. I had to send one back and the new one was only slightly better than before. Small details around this café were quite an enjoyment to find out. You have an option of Sparkling and still water which were both perfectly cold. The wooden tray which the food came in was lovely. All of our order came with chutney — great gesture but I liked the pie without it.

What’s not to love about this place? Well. The narrow road to get to it, but that’s it. Beautiful industrial interior, highlighted with gorgeous fresh flowers. Clean lines, great design and typography — everything about it is pleasing to the eye. My first time here was January, 2013 when we met some friends for coffee. We started with some expertly prepared flat whites which had the most perfect espresso, then a simple pour-over(it was a long coffee date), and finally got a cold brew coffee soda for the road. Delicious. I couldn’t get enough! We came back here in March, 2014 to stock up on some fresh roasted beans before we headed back to Canada. The space expanded since our last visit, and was filled with a lot more fun little coffee gadgets — aeropress, chemex, burr grinders, a huge variety of fresh roasted coffee beans, adorable little to go coffee cups AND the Little & Friday Cookbook(gimme!). The tables were stocked with arts & culture magazines, and I was as happy as a clam. The coffee, again, was perfectly crafted, and I drank too much of it. You have the choice of sparkling or still water to rehydrate yourself after your caffeinated beverage, which I thought was a nice touch. This trip we stocked up on the Brazil roast and Bob-O-Link — both of which pair incredibly with our aeropress at home. Lets be honest — we’re almost through both of them. As far as food — they are stocked up with delicious sweet & savory pastries and pies crafted by Little & Friday. It took every bit of my restraint to not get a pie. They looked and smelled amazing! Next time, next time. The service is always amazing, happy, upbeat and casual and yeah… Just go here, already.

Not only will this be the best coffee you drink in NZ but the café fit out is perfect too. These guys are the kings!

I was blown away by the interiors and the vibe. Industrial shabby chic, where coffee is king. I’m impressed that we have this in Auckland. We went here for the coffee and a light breakfast, as there are no cooked meals. Just cabinet food from Little & Friday. Coffee is black, white, brewed, or cold brewed. No frills, nothing superfluous. It feels like a new kind of café. Confident, purposeful, design-savvy, accommodating. A new favourite. It would have been great if it was open on Sundays.

Good One is located in that somewhat random block of buildings in the middle of Douglas Street, easily identified by the bright yellow pull-up door and matching tables and chairs that line the street. The interior has an industrial feel with exposed concrete and high ceilings — imagine a jazzed up warehouse. There are big wooden tables and a ginormous metal bookcase, choccas with Nat Geographic. The store is littered with coffee paraphernalia so if you a bit of a coffee nerd this is totally the place to come and geek out! Gorgeous sweet treats and sangas from Little and Friday are available too. If it wasn’t so tricky to get a park, I would for sure make this my go to in Grey Lynn/Ponsonby.

Great new little niche café, specialising in their coffee brewing. It’s brewed in a fantastic way, individual to each table. One pot/glass serves 2 people. They use international beans, and not being a huge coffee drinker myself, I was highly impressed. We got a chocolate and lavender flavoured coffee which was incredible. Also the food they do there is superb. A perfect local for coffees and food for Ponsonby people on their way to work. Set on the side of the street in a industrial building. Multiple large coffee machines and general interesting things to look at while there. Seating is out on the street or various levels inside, or around a large table. Definitely a place worth checking out. I’ve taken my coffee connoisseur friend, and it gets his tick of approval A place for coffee fanatics!

This is a really cute café, I think it’s been here a wee while but it was so tucked away out of the main Ponsonby road radius it took me a while to become aware of its existence. They have plunger coffee for the hipsters and sun block for the people sitting out side, basking in the full sun drinking their delicious coffee, eating some yummy pastry form the cabinet and gossiping about nothing because life, at this moment, just feels so great. I love the building, it’s rather industrial and still quite«raw»(cardboard boxes with stuff still in it etc) but I like it, feels very relaxed, like you’re coming into some ones house rather than there being a gap between ‘customer’ and ‘worker’.

Supreme is where you take serious coffee drinkers. The coffee is good, obviously, and there are all sorts of coffee related accessories around the joint. Food is limited to a cabinet. There are pies and brioche and toasted sandwiches and the like, a few sweets. I can vouch for the toasties and the bacon and egg pie. But you really come to this place for the coffee. And the good vibes. It’s got a nice feeling in there, the ceilings are super high and there are National Geographics piled up around the place. There’s a big wooden shared table and also bench seats and smaller tables. I like to go there for meetings because it feels relaxed and it’s a little different to your average café. As an aside, they also serve Arano juice by the bottle there, which is one of my favourite things. It probably doesn’t matter to most but I love that it doesn’t get poured out of a giant bottle into a glass. That way, you can take it with you if you don’t finish it.

It’s really great when you know about a place and feel like most people don’t. It’s like being a member of some kind of excellent and exclusive club. Coffee Supreme at 42 Douglas Street is one of those clubs for me. It’s so anonymous and out of the way. Even if you walk directly past this place, you’re likely to miss it. Try not to, because it’s really great. It’s the Auckland HQ for coffee supreme, so they have all this random coffee stuff scattered throughout the store, and it has a really great industrial vibe. I love the vibe of this joint. I don’t drink coffee but based on the fact that they call this a «brew bar» and the way they have all sorts of percolators and random coffee science shit in their kitchen, I’m gonna assume it’s pretty great. The main thing I like here is the little tap they have which you get water from. It’s a thing of beauty.

Arguable one of Auckland’s, and even New Zealand’s, best places for coffee. Supreme Douglas Street are extremely serious about their coffee. Which is mighty good for all us customer. On walking in it seems like most eclectic, modern retro cafes, but when you see their coffee lab you know they are on another level. It’s filled with all sorts of scientific beakers and gadgets that are brewing coffee. My current favourite is the cold drip coffee, which has been a lifesaver this summer. But if all these new inventions aren’t your cup of coffee, they also do a perfect espresso that goes down a treat with their famous brioche.
