Mt Eden Traditional Butchery

These guys are amazing — their sausages are out of this world. I’ll never buy a supermarket sausage again! I have a real aversion to horrible, unknown gristly bits in my sausages, and I have yet to have that experience with a single sausage from this butcher. Plus they’ve given me a hot sausage from the pan a few times now when I’ve gone in for my pork chipolatas, and they’ve all been delicious. Their bacon is pretty awesome too, but I eat a lot of bacon and it’s a little too pricy for me to justify buying it from them every time.

Now known as Pokeno Bacon and still a fantastic butchery. The boys are fantastic and happy to accommodate you if they don’t have what you want in the window /​counter or recommendations on cooking what ever it is you are buying. The meat never fails to be wonderful and great quality. So glad to still have such a brilliant butcher near by. And if you happen to time it well you might get a lovely cooked sausie to snack on…

If your like me you hate getting your meat from the supermarket, it’s always overpriced and there’s a limited selection. So when I moved to mt eden and discovered this little gem I was so excited. The meat selection is excellent and the staff are so helpful. But best of all and this will be great for all you parents out there, they give out free sausages with your purchase. Nothing better than an organic free sausage lol! So if your heading through mt eden or you live in the neighbourhood and haven’t been here, it’s a must.

We came here on our way home, conveniently at 5.30 on the dot when the clearway outside stops, enabling us to park right outside. All I wanted was a couple of pieces of eye fillet, so I wasn’t in a position to say ‘hey, what should I have for dinner?’, but in saying that, I feel this is totally the kind of place you could. You know the New World ads where they pretend that’s what the butcher will do, but really it’s just some 17 year old who doesn’t give a crap about what you have for dinner… Here is where they might give a damn.
Will totally head back, especially if the head is in a bit of a jumble about what’s for dinner. Parking is a little bit of a mission in Mt Eden, but sometimes you can wing it — like we did!
The meat itself was beautiful, and for two big pieces of eye fillet it was $ 12.00. I don’t think that’s any more than I would pay in the supey. I was also eyeing up all those delicious sausages as well… I’m sure they’ll make it into the basket next time.

There is a nice small town feeling about using the butcher on your local high street, corporate megamarts be damned, it is worth supporting local small businesses, especially when they are friendly and have a lot of knowledge about their trade. With prices comparable to a supermarket, sometimes marginally higher, Mt Eden Traditional Butchery always has a mouth watering selection of meat that looks super fresh. I quite often find myself with all the ingredients which I need to cook a meal except for the meat. Heading down to the butcher, getting friendly service and a fresh cut of meat sure is a lot more pleasant than suffering through the hassle of going to the supermarket.

When I was a kid, my mother would often send me to the local butchers for a pound of mince for her Irish stew. The supermarkets drove that particular butcher along with many other out of business but it is refreshing that there are still places like this around today. Apart from the fact that I think we should support small independent shops, the quality of the meat here is second to none. I was there last week and was delighted to find out that they now stock pokeno bacon and sausages — we can generally only buy this stuff when we pass through Mercer on our way down to Cambridge. My wife is vegetarian but even she admits, this is a lovely, clean and well presented shop. If we are having the in laws over for a barbeque, we generally get the meat in this place and they are always very impressed with it.

I once stopped here for some burger patties as I wanted to make handmade burgers for dinner than night. Despite there being none made up, the butcher was happy to make some up for me. Less than ten minutes later they were ready, and they made for an excellent dinner.
Another time I was asked if I would like to sample a sausage that they had cooking away, and as it was conveniently at lunch I obliged. It was a sausage from the Pokeno Butchery (Mt Eden Butchers have only recently started selling these, along with their award winning bacon). It was very tasty indeed and I think they make a great option for an easy dinner.
