We stopped in for a quick lunch and since the weather was amazing we sat outside on the deck under the shade of the big red umbrella. The order was BLTs all around, very tasty and the fries were good. The price was right too. This much loved Kiwi pub is a classic with awesome ambience and really friendly staff. The lunchtime crowd consists of a lot of businessmen and women but the teenagers and I certainly didn’t feel out of place this particular afternoon. Normanby Hotel has a great entertainment lineup Thursday to Sunday nights and good old Quiz night on a Wednesday which my friends who are local Mt Edenites attend. It would be the place to come for weekend brunch otherwise lunch and dinner are served seven days.

I have been known to frequent Normanby Hotel(from back when it was still called Cardrona) for pub quizzes and it does the quiz pretty well. Except for maybe the weirdly green screen if you happened to be in that corner of the pub. Not many vegetarian options on the menu but the vege nachos go down a treat, or my usual favourite — you guessed it, chips — have never disappointed. I’ve had a dessert or two here before which were good but nothing out of the ordinary. And prices about what you’d expect for a pub, too. I wouldn’t rave about it but I would go here again.

This place used to be the Cadrona Alehouse, and since it’s rebrand I can’t really see a whole lot of difference, which is a good thing because it had it’s own charm before. This pub’s crowning glory has to be their outdoor seating, it’s build high up of the road and it’s so nice to sit there on a Friday evening for a few lazy ones under their big umbrellas. I also love the stone fireplace, it makes me think this place would fit in well in the South Island and all the farm blokes would go there for a beer. Really good place to come with your mates, especially those mates that don’t like the classy scene(everyone has at least one).

Normanby Hotel is a brilliant place to meet your dad for a few cold ones, some good food and a catch up. As suggested by its name Normanby Hotel is located on Normanby Road and is your classic pub. With TVs inside to watch the footie, radio and speakers outside, various beers on tap, big wooden tables and chairs outside and huge burgers and thickcut fries on the menu, Normanby Hotel is a hit with the dads! And I must admit, when its sunny sitting out at the big tables with a cold cider and some salty fries is pretty unbeatable! Live music and quiz nights also occur weekly at Normanby Hotel, as well as special offers on pizzas, steaks and beers being available most days. The staff are all very friendly and the atmosphere of the Hotel is very casual and relaxed — exactly what you hope for in your local pub! Bonus: A huge fireplace is also situated in the outdoor area which overlooks the street, meaning even on colder winter nights you can still enjoy the outdoor ambience as long as you have a jersey.

Do you like wooden furnishings? Because holy crap this place has them in spades. All the wood. Some of you may remember the Normanby as the Cardrona Speight’s Alehouse, and it has certainly retained that rugged, pride-of-the-south beer and roast meat flavour. The meals are hearty and of little use to vegetarians, and the beer is cold and in enormous glasses. They show the rugby, when there’s rugby, and there are pub quizzes and live music at other times. Not the place for a raging night on the dance floor, but a pleasant enough way to spend a mid-week evening. Not particularly close to other bars or public transport so best to drive or, if you’re drinking, take a taxi. Good on ya mate etc.
