One Tree Hill Domain – Maungakiekie

I so enjoy walking around here, coming from the UK it seems quite strange to see hens and cows so close to the city.
There are great areas to walk, fly kits, or walk up to the top of the view and look out at the great vista of Auckland and it’s surrounding suburbs.
It’s another great place to bring the children and wear them out on the playground for sitting down for a picnic lunch. Those that are keen enough there is sufficient space for a game of cricket or football (the proper game of football) or those who prefer playing with the odd shaped ball too. Watch out for bikes cycling around too.

Not going to lie, I saw a photo on instagram of One Tree Hill and that’s when I decided that I would add it to my list of things to do while in Auckland. We took the bus and it is located about 30 – 35 minutes from Auckland CBD by bus. I was told by a local that if you only have time to do one, to go to One Tree Hill over Mt. Eden.
We were fortunate enough to come on such a beautiful day. We snapped quite a few fun and gorgeous photos while we walked up, you will also see a ton of sheep! Once you get to the top, you get to enjoy 360 degree views of Auckland. On our way back down we decided to go off the trail and explore a bit more of the park, which was a lot of fun!
Take the time to read the history behind it all while you’re there. I would highly recommend adding this to your list!

Actually, it’s not a hill. It’s a volcano that erupted long, long ago from three different craters, creating the second largest lava filed in New Zealand! So way cooler than a hill! :p
There’s no tree standing because an Early Settler decided to take an axe to it in the 1850s and Māori activists resorted to hacking the replacement tree down with a chainsaw to make a political point — not once but twice!

Perhaps we should tell the Auckland Council to stop pondering over what type of tree to replant and just erect a windmill!!?

U2 wrote a song about One Tree Hill and released it on their album the Joshua Tree, which topped the New Zealand singles chart!
I could continue to offer you a trip down memory lane but hopefully, you’ve got the gist of it by now! One Tree Hill is an Auckland icon!
So put on a designer black jacket (a Baker or a Barbour perhaps?!) and head over to enjoy the breathtaking view from atop this hill, considered good enough to be submitted by the Department of Conservation for consideration as a UNESCO Cultural and Heritage Site!

This has to be one of the nicest open spaces in Auckland. From school trips to a run or a bike ride. There is always fun to be had .
You can really watch the seasons change here especially in the spring with the lambs and daffodils.
This park is also a working farm .
At the playground by the stardome observatory there is a great train ride, hours of enjoyment for the little dudes .

Der One Tree Hill in Auckland hat ein Monumemt — einen Obelisken auf der Spitze. Eigentlich stand auf dem Hügel auch genau ein Baum — deshalb der Name. Der Baum wurde wohl mal von einem Aktivisten vergiftet und seit dem hat der One Tree Hill eben keinen Tree mehr.
Von der Spitze der Hügels hat man eine hervorragende 360° Rundumsicht auf Auckland.
Der Cornwall Park in dem der Hügel liegt ist ebenfalls ein schöner Park und am Wochenende populär bei Picknickern.
Der Hügel lässt sich zu Fuß erreichen, vom Parkeingang aus ist das allerdings einen nennenswerte Strecke (ca. 2,5 km). Wer möchte kann auch mit dem Auto direkt bis zum Monumemt hoch fahren und dort parken.

The whole Cornwall Park and One Tree Hill park is a huge asset to Auckland. At weekends it can get very busy and parking can be a challenge but there is plenty of room to stroll around, look at the sheep/​lambs, cattle, climb to the top of the hill, walk the dog, play with a ball/​frisbee/​kite etc. There is a working farm on the property so the public are asked to refrain from feeding the animals but plenty of people appear to ignore that!
A walk or drive up to the summit is a must for excellent views of a large part of Auckland City and there is a memorial to Sir John Logan Campbell who gifted the land to the city. The iconic obelisk towers overhead and this can be seen from miles away around the city.
There is the Stardome and a kids’ playground suitable for up to approx 8 year olds, plus a groovy flying fox — yeehaaa!
Then there’s coffee at the kiosk or over on Manukau Road at Frolic Café.

The view from the summit of One Tree Hill stretches wide across Auckland in all directions. It’s a nice walk to head to the top of the hill from Cornwall Park. One of my favourite things to do is to get some fish and chips from down the road and sit at the base of the hill for a fish and chips picnic. There’s a great observatory there too!

My wife got a big kick out of seeing the sheep up close dotting the hillside. Seeing them as you drive the windy path up is really nice. A great view from the top, but I do have to say that things got crowded up there. There was not a lot of parking up at the top, so we kind of had to park illegally for a second then keep going. The people that rode bikes up, although I’m sure that is a long ride, may have had the better idea because you can take in the view more if you don’t have to worry about your car.
For that reason, I preferred Mount Eden, which had a better parking setup, and which was calmer at the top.

If there is one place in Auckland where you can go and chillout, be it on your own, with a lover one or a gang of friends, for me One Tree Hill is top of the list.
Not only are there plenty of places to park up, lay down a blanket and chill in the sun, there is a great walk around the base of one Tree Hill and if you’re feeling really energetic you can walk to the top where one tree once stood.
Scattered around the park you can find free barbecues, both gas and wood, to cook that something a bit special, a great way to addition to any picnic.
My preferred option on a hot day, rather than getting sand stuck where it shouldn’t :)

Great range of views of Auckland as you circle the car, whether in car or on foot. And bonus cuteness when its birthing season and there’s a bunch of lambs and calves all over the park!
Do make sure to leave the park on time if the car as there may be a fee to have someone come unlock the gates after they’re locked!

On the occasional day trip to Auckland as kids, our parents would always stop by One Tree Hill. We had this idea that One Tree Hill was one of Auckland’s premier attractions. Not to say that there is anything wrong with One Tree Hill, but I just find it amusing that I would eagerly ask, «Mum, Dad, are we going to go to One Tree Hill this time?»
One Tree Hill is situated in a huge park, so huge in fact that it has pastoral quality — there is even a few sheep grazing about the place. The area is also home to some of Auckland’s oldest and largest trees. There is also a Stardome in the vicinity — very worthwhile. You basically lie back in a recliner kind of seat and look up at a concave roof. A machine projects lights onto the roof which emulate various night sky constellations.

One Tree Hill is an Auckland icon. Situated in Greenlane One Tree Hill is one of the many dormant volcanoes in Auckland and connects two of the loveliest parks in the city — Cornwall Park and the One Tree Hill Domain.
In years passed the mountain had one solo eerie looking tree atop of it — hence the name, however about ten years ago after many vandalism attempts, it was finally cut down. I remember the day it happened. Despite seeming a little weird now, that tree was a huge part of Auckland and it was really sad to see it go.
Although now ‘none tree hill’ may be a more fitting name, the mountain and the surrounding parks still attract countless tourists and locals alike. It is a beautiful place to go for a walk or run or picnic with the family, as well as having superb views of Auckland from the top of the volcano.
Bonus: The playground near the Stardome in the One Tree Hill Domain used to be one of my favourites. It had a little train that weaved around the outskirts of the playground and riding it as a child was so fun!

Auckland is a city of volcanic cones, and One Tree Hill is one of the most complex — it’s got three different craters and the largest lava field (apart from Rangitoto). It’s also third-​highest (behind Rangitoto and Mt Eden). It was also the most heavily fortified by the Maori — look at it from the air and you see the amount of terraces that were built into the hills for protection.
All of these features make One Tree Hill rather impressive in its own humble way — a shame in some ways that people only think of it for the missing eponymous tree, but I digress. It’s a great place to drive up to for a nice view, and a favourite make-​out spot after a smooth date. Combined with adjacent Cornwall Park and you have a great destination for a lovely grassy walk in the middle of the city.

Ive done quite a few of the New Zealand Hill (really its a massive mountain in my eyes) walks. And one tree hill (or really no tree hill now) is pretty neat. A little too many animals (meaning animal ‘leftovers’) around for my liking but other than that its pretty cool.
Its a neat spot to go to to watch the Auckland fireworks displays or just a random day walk when its nice out, or at night time to head over there with a blanket and some take aways and just enjoy the view of the city or the other side. Its a cute spot for date night and it is also very very very popular with the tourists. theres always people there clicking away. So if you want privacy don’t go there on an obvious day and time.
Buses go up there and cars so its not totally serene or anything but it is still quite a relaxing spot. It is and can also be used as an exercise spot but not that many people use it for that.

One Tree Hill is a volcano peak situated in Cornwall Park, Auckland. Walking up this extinct monument is not only good exercise, but also gives you 360 degree views of Auckland’s metropolitan. This is the perfect place to take tourists or to come visit if you want to see the city of sails. Access to the summit via vehicle is from 7am until 11pm. To get to the volcanic peak you must enter Cornwall park either through Campbell Road, Greenlane West Road, or Manukau Road. A perfect adventure for the whole family, it’s a walk worth making.
