It’s a little surprising there’s not more café options down in the Wynyard Quarter, as I’m sure there’s lots of people like me who’d just like a sandwich and a drink rather than a full meal. This means that Rushworth is pretty much it, and luckily it’s a good option: run by the same folks who operate the lovely Reslau and McGregor Brothers up on Elliott Street, it offers a small range of decent counter food; there’s no kitchen here so what you see on the counter is what’s available that day. You have to get in pretty early to get some of the best muffins and scones in central Auckland. There’s a few tables inside for blustery days, but even on inclement days you can sit outside under the awning and be perfectly happy. My only wish is that they had slightly more exciting juice and cold drink offerings for those of us who don’t drink coffee!

Rushworth is the only place in Wynyard Quarter that serves Allpress coffee, it was in fact the sole reason I chose to come here with a friend of mine for breakfast last year and neither of us were disappointed. We both had toasted bagels, which come from Bagel Love which is not all that far from Wynyard Quarter, they were then toasted and served with honey and beautiful rich, silky smooth coffee. The guy who served us was ultra friendly, he went out of his way to prepare the bagel in a non usual way and made very good coffee. We chose to sit in a booth which was really comfy, I think we stayed for around an hour and a half, had a couple of coffees. It was a great start to the weekend, I remember that much. Shame they don’t stay open a bit later so that you can get decent coffee down there late after 4pm.

This is quickly becoming a favourite meeting place during the day when I just need to detach from the city. Peacefully located in Wynyard Quarter overlooking the harbour, a selection of outdoor seating plus some comfy internal booths mean there is always a good option depending on the weather. I have never been a fan of muffins, but Rushworth is slowly changing my mind, the hand baked selection on the counter provides temptation every time. I am sure it will have a step change in popularity when the massive ASB building next door gets used but for the time being I am happy to always find a seat in the sun to kick back. I am great for their bottom line, but their muffins are not so great for mine!
