Welcome aboard The Ancient Mariner, a nautically-themed fish and chips eatery, specialising in home-made fish, chips and burgers. We make old fashioned New Zealand-style food, keeping it real and keeping it local. We take a lot of pride in our range of home-made products, right from the potato and kumara chips made in the kitchen every morning, the hand-made Angus beef patties, salad, relishes, fish cakes, paua fritters and mushy peas, to name a few, all of which draw punters from every part of Auckland. We are determined to wipe out the bad rap that fish and chips have been stuck with for an unhealthily long time, so our food is as healthy as we can make it. We use fresh, locally available ingredients, Alfa One rice bran oil for deep-frying and offer a range of grilled seafood as well as a Gluten-Free menu for Coeliacs. We make no compromises on the quality of our food, and our prices are as down-to-earth as we are. You can dine in or take away. Either way, nobody does it batter. :-)
History
Established in 2014.
You could say we’ve been in the game for a long time, more than a decade, in fact. After having bought and run a small chippie in another Auckland suburb for a really long time, we decided to move on and set up a space from scratch… with the kitchen layout exactly as we wanted to make it work for us and with seating for people to enjoy the atmosphere we knew we could create with the concept we had in mind. We leased space in a newly renovated and expanded iconic building on Mt Eden Road and with the help of a bunch of extremely talented and creative designers, we turned our dream idea into bricks and mortar reality. We want The Ancient Mariner to be a fish and chip shop like no other, with its unique, nautically themed interiors which includes sound effects of the sea playing in the background, along with the fresh and healthy ingredients used to make our range of home-made food, topped with our ever-friendly banter, without ripping people off with fancy prices.
