A good time is always had at the Gypsy Tea Room. This is one of the oldest bars in Grey Lynn and they do it well. A perfect corner site with plenty of outdoors seating and lots of cozy indoor spaces make this the ideal place to bunker down and add to the tab. The drinks list is not enormous but there’s a good range of local and imported beer and wine and the usual cocktails. A decent menu is available should you wish to make a night of it. What really makes GTR sing is the great staff — they’re always friendly and go out of their way to make sure you have a good time. It’s the perfect local bar, even if you don’t live in Grey Lynn.

The Gypsy Tea Room is everything a good neighbourhood bar should be; unpretentious with a great drinks list and staff that treat you like you’re a local, even if you’re not. I’ve been to The Gypsy Tea Room a few times, normally in the afternoon. They’ve got great street-side seating with just the right amount of shade. The bartenders have a good knowledge of their wine list, as well as the hard stuff, and are friendly but in a laidback, casual sort of way. Although primarily a bar, they do have a short menu feat. bar snacks like olives, calamari and a couple of woodfired pizzas. Take note, the pizzas are small so if you’re hungry I reckon you could polish off a whole pizza solo. I’ve never been here late at night so don’t know what the vibe is like but as an casual afternoon watering hole, you’ll struggle to find better.

On the hunt for a place to have some birthday drinks, I discovered this little gem and booked their back room purely based on photos found on their website. When I arrived, it was cosy, intimate and had a roaring fire crackling away in the corner. It was kind of like stepping into a friend’s vintage, rustic lounge on a cold evening and being instantly comfortable and at home. The booking of the back room is free with no minimum bar tab and you can play your own music! The staff are super friendly to boot and can’t do enough for you. Honestly, can’t tell you how much I enjoyed this experience! I accidentally invited too many people though, so it was a tad claustrophobic when everyone had arrived, so be sure you’re truly looking for an intimate venue :)

Beautiful classy cosy wee bar, great for dates or small groups, amazing drink selection and décor of the bar, and nice bar food too. My favourite place to drink when I do drink(rarely). Staff need to chill out a bit though, they seem to think they are the hottest things alive, but it’s quite entertaining to observe :)

A gem of a suburban watering hole, The Gypsy Tea Room is great for Friday nights, with the bar providing enough atmosphere for a decent hit-out at the bar. We had a friend’s leaving party there and the place was packed, with barely any elbow room. It was a great night and it lucky trips to the bar are a short distance because they were extremely frequent. There are tables on the street outside, with it becoming inevitable the leaving party was to spill out onto the street. Other than this night, other visits to The Gypsy Tea Room have proved to be very enjoyable, with little expectation often leading to a larger than expected night.

I think this is a nice little place in a very nice little part of Auckland. West Lynn is seriously underrated. In my opinion it beats the shit out of Ponsonby and Grey Lynn and Parnell and all the usual suspects. Probably not as good as Blockhouse Bay, but then who is?!? Anyway. Gypsy Tea Room is pretty much your stock standard rustic drinking and snacking affair. It’s got the twee name and the old looking interior design. I’m pretty certain fairy lights come into play at some point. They have a nice selection of craft beer and plenty of different wines(I couldn’t tell you if they’re any good to be honest. Wine is wine.). One of the best things is that the snacks are pretty affordable. Four stars.

My best memories of the Gypsy Tea Room are of nights when you intend to go there for just a couple of quiets, and end up leaving some hours later deciding how you’re going to call in sick the next morning. Trouble is, I often head there with workmates, so there’s no way out! We will often load up on the super cheap snacks while getting loaded on glass upon glass of the wine on offer. The staff are pretty good humoured, even as the night wears on and the bulk of your group is trying to take the same barman home! GTR is always a good time — I thoroughly recommend it as a place to get silly. Make a bad decision on a weeknight asap!

Gypsy Tea Room is a quintessential neighbourhood bar and one of my regular haunts. With its thoughtful wine list, delicious cocktails and line up of craft beers, it’s the perfect prelude to a dinner at Delicious, a quiet Sunday afternoon drink or a first date. Try and angle for one of the outside tables — it can be pretty dark and rustic inside. West Lynn’s best little bar, see you there on a sunny afternoon soon.
