Just another mall really. Well another usual Westfield. All the usual shops, but probably more targeted at women than men. Good size food court with plenty of food options including one very cool looking Mexican joint. First time I’ve been here for a while, and in saying that not a lot has changed.

Westfield St Lukes is a cross between hell and that stair scene from the end of The Labyrinth. Actually, it’s so bad that having a tights-wearing David Bowie chasing you around be something of a relief. It would at least add an element of intrigue to what is otherwise a long march along the bright fluorescent corridor to a brain aneurysm.
Do not go here if you want to buy the following things:
1. Interesting things.
2. Good things.
Also the parking is terrible.

I love malls. I really do. I don’t even care. I know they are not «cool» and «cool» people wouldn’t be caught dead going to Glassons or getting some sweet skull earrings from Diva or Equip. But I love malls. I love Kmart, too, and St Lukes Mall has Kmart inside the mall, how fricken convenient (and it’s right next to Glassons). But, however, although, while I love love love malls, I hate how many people there are and I hate food courts. And St Lukes is always packed with people who walk too damn slow and dress like mirrors are too expensive. The food court is laid out absolutely stupidly and there’s never anywhere to sit, and I don’t like how there’s shops surrounding the food court, because then those shops are always packed, and they smell like food. Why would you put a clothes store next to KFC? Yuck.

It genuinely alarms me that people think that shopping is a «leisure» experience. Shopping is not leisure; shopping is what you do when you need something, and you can’t make it, or borrow it, or hire it. Leisure is spending time with friends, or going for a walk, or making something, or going for a picnic, or going bungy jumping, or any of several other hundred things I could think of that contribute more to the sum of human experience than going shopping.
And going shopping at St. Lukes is possibly the most soul destroying thing in the world, and this is what alarms me: what will the world look like when there are generations of people who think of leisure purely as shopping at this place of no natural light, constant aural assaults, and shops full of items of dubious necessity made by underpaid and overworked people in a factory far away?

Do you like shopping? Yeah? How about M.C. Escher’s ‘Crazy Stairs’ picture? Or the white noise they used to torture prisoners at Guantanamo Bay?
If all these things sound like you, then come on down to St Lukes shopping mall, where you get all of that plus other people’s children.
Really, I hate the place. Anyone who hates malls will hate it, because this one is the worst. But even people who quite like malls will hate it, because this is a crappy, crappy mall. The place is set up like a casino, all designed to keep you disoriented, weakened, and spending. No natural light, no visible exits, a Möbius strip layout where one floor sort of sluggishly merges with another — St Lukes is the sort of fun house the Joker would trap Batman in, only with more chain stores. Avoid it like the plague.

My partner and I always joke that St Lukes is our fridge because we live so close to it. But really, it’s a bit of a shame because the novelty of malls really wears off when you live right next to one. Sure it’s handy but it’s also pretty dangerous for your wallet… If you even start to think you might want something it’s: «oh I’ll just pop to the mall». This Westfield isn’t really anything special and I sometimes wish they branched out and tried something a little different in their food court instead of having the same old boring food vendors there. My favourite place to eat there would be Theobroma and Shamiana but they all get a little boring after a while. One of the biggest issues with this mall is that it’s constantly packed. As it’s one of the closest malls to the city it feels like everyone and their dog goes there on the weekend.

A really good place to hang out during the day, St Lukes is more or less central being just a short drive from the city. The parking is ample and free.
The layout to St Lukes is fairly easy to navigate, and there’s a big food court filled with variety. It has all the shops you really need within it, which makes it a handy mall to live close too. Otherwise, it’s a good central spot to meet your friends if you don’t want to grapple with city traffic.
What would move St Lukes from a 3 star to a 5 star is its late night experience. There’s a cinema there, but only one restaurant that stays open late. Even Starbucks (which is right next door to Event Cinemas) doesn’t care to entertain late into the night, which is a real let down. This area has no places to eat even close to the mall, so if they want to step up to the plate, they should leave their food court open till 7:30 or 8pm. This advice really goes out to all Westfields with movie theatres within them.
