Lisboa is worth a repeat visit!
So much to do! So much to eat! So much to see and experience!
Or you can just do nothing and chill in cafes and eat Pastel de Nata from Pastries de Belem everyday.
The city is really hilly and with all the walking, I can eat more!
Price is reasonable compares to other European Cities…
I will be back!

Rate a city? Impossible! Well, okay… done.

In review # 600, my hat is off to Lisbon, the capital of Portugal.
Luis de Camoes, Portugal’s most famous poet, was born in Lisbon during the Age of the Discoveries, when Portuguese navigational prowess had effectively made Lisbon one of Europe’s eminent cities and ports. About Lisbon he wrote «The princess of the world … before even whom the ocean bows.» That’s a tall order.
Lisbon’s longer history actually precedes that, when Romans and Moors had staked their claim to Europe’s westernmost capital. With changes in management, the city continued to prosper. Then, on November 1, 1755, a powerful earthquake rocked the city. Much of the city was destroyed, many of its residents perished, fires erupted, and the tidal surge from the Atlantic came up the Tejo and flooded the low town. After this catastrophe, Lisbon had to scramble to reorganize itself and heal, and was thus not able to attend to «business as usual.» One important person in its rebirth was the Marques de Pombal, who commissioned the redesign of the Baixa, the low town extending inward from the harbor front, in a rectilinear grid and with public squares. Today, the Marques de Pombal stands tall on his monument in the middle of a major rotunda, gazing over the center of the city and the river.
Lisbon, and Portugal, then had monarchies, a dictator, and, finally, on April 25, 1974, democracy arrived, hence the harbor bridge bearing this date as its very name. In 1998, Lisbon showed its savvy by planning and building Expo 98 in an impressive edge city called Parque das Nacoes.
My love for this city was born from happenstance. When I was a child, we took the ship from New York to Europe and, after 5 days at sea, the first sight of land and port of call was Lisbon. I sensed the excitement on board. I had to be hoisted up to see over the railing! I also wondered if the ship’s mast and funnel would clear the Ponte 25 de Abril, not knowing that the answer was an obvious yes. On a cool, comfortable August morning, we took an organized tour of select city highlights, before setting sail for the Strait of Gibraltar and onto other Mediterranean ports. I vowed to go back when I was both an adult and life’s circumstances permitted. And I have been back many times! Also, having been raised mostly in L.A., I saw the Ponte 25 de Abril long before I ever saw the Golden Gate, so I have an immense fondness for Lisbon’s bridge!
The Lisbon of today is on the up and up. Its location, on several hills and on the north shore of the Rio Tejo upstream from the Atlantic Ocean by about 15 or 20 miles, makes for a great protected natural harbor which make it a transportation hub. It is also a business center and the country’s capital, with newer high rises in Saldanha, Amoreiras, and at Parque das Nacoes. Alongside the new, the charm, character, and beauty of things that are old has been preserved. The architectural styles are eclectic and one especially fascinating element is the use of azulejos, painted tiles which have pictures, patterns, or tell a story, covering the exteriors of older buildings.
There is so much to see and do. One can savor its many cafes, down-​to-​earth eateries, or fine dining. One can partake in cultural events such as theater, expositions, the fado, concerts, and museums, of which the Gulbenkian is the most famous. One can explore monuments from many chapters of the city’s history, which include the Manueline era works at Belem, Baroque works such as Queluz, and the old fortress at Castelo de Sao Jorge overlooking the city. One can just enjoy circulating on its trams such as the #28 or its 4 elevators, of which 3 are funiculars and 1 is an actual elevator, and sampling different neighborhoods in the process. One can take commuter trains to places like Sintra, for its palaces, or alongside the Tejo to where it meets the Atlantic at Cascais and Estoril. Lastly, while Lisbon is inland from the ocean, its area beaches to its west present different personalities. North of the mouth of the Tejo are beaches like windy Guincho, suitable for surfers. South of the Tejo is the long sweep of Costa de Caparica, with additional beaches south of it and all the way down the Costa Azul. The latter also gives one an excuse the catch a ferry across the Tejo from Lisbon’s harbor to the south shore, getting some great photos en route, and then board a bus to the beaches and even take in the view back to Lisbon from Cristo Rei.
The layout and the array of what to see and do in Lisbon are fascinating. So is the coexistence of locals hanging clothes to dry and yelling across windows at each other in the Alfama, the young, hip, and trendy in the Bairro Alto, businesspeople, colonial retornados, retornados who worked elsewhere in Europe, Brazilians, people who hail from other European countries, and tourists. It’s not London, Paris, or Rome. However, Lisbon, so comfortable being itself, is easily my favorite among Europe’s capitals.

Vasco was from a dope city. Whatup Vasco.

As I’m wrapping up all my reviews from our trip to Lisboa, I couldn’t think of a better way to reach review 300 (!) for the year than by reviewing the city itself. I love traveling. I love traveling to Europe. I love spending time in cities that, while modern, haven’t lost their charm of the old world. Lisboa is exactly that.
I first learned about this beautiful city when I had a country report in my 7^th grade Geography class and was assigned Portugal. They say third time’s a charm, but it took me four visits to Europe before I finally made it to this little slice of Iberian heaven.
While we stayed up near the airport at the Radisson Blu, we were a few blocks from the Campo Grande metro and just a hop, skip & short ride away from the heart of the capital. The (literally) cobblestone sidewalks & streets lined with shops to peruse as you take in the old sights reminded me of the backpacking trip I took several years ago.
Lisboa wasn’t a place on the Unilocal map just yet when we made our trip, so we had to kick it old school with our exploration of the city, but it led us to tiny hole in the wall restaurants serving up delicious bacalhau and a few different pastelerias teeming with beautiful pastries. The Pasteis de Nata were little gifts from heaven for this sugar-​loving girl. We took every opportunity we had to duck into different coffee shops and sample the espresso. It will be hard to find somewhere that serves bicas like we found in Lisboa.
I definitely want to go back and if anybody ever asks me where they should go on their next vacation, my answer will always be Lisboa!

One of the most amazing cities I have ever visited. When we first went here it was based on a random selection and based on the fact that we found a cheap flight :-)
Having stayed here and walked around the city and experiencing the local hospitality I would say this is one of my favourite cities in the world to visit and stay.
It’s beautiful old world city that is not arrogant and welcoming. It’s very reasonable to stay, eat and travel from once you get here and the weather is also pretty pleasant. The Portuguese are very welcoming and friendly and that makes for a fabulous experience.
There is great history here and lots of beautiful buildings and interesting squares. I would happily come back here any day :-)

Ich liebe diese Stadt. Für mich die Schönste in Europa. Hier gibt es viel zu entdecken und
die Gastfreundschaft der Portugiesen ist herzerfrischend.

Sehenswerte Stadt, meist gepflegt und ordentlich und eine Menge an Geheimtipps, was Restaurants und Cafés angeht.

Lissabon wird in Reiseführern völlig zu Recht als die Perle Portugals bezeichnet. Die alte Seefahrerstadt bietet unglaublich viele Sehenswürdigkeiten wie z.B. Denkmäler, Burgen, Aussichtspunkte, Parks, ausgefallene Aufzüge, und vor allem wunderschöné alte Häuser, Adelshäuser und sensationelle Gebäude in manuelischen Baustil. Hervorzuhebende Sehenswürdigkeiten sind sicherlich der torre de Belem, das Entdeckerdenkmal, das wunderschöné Kloster Mosteiro dos Jeronimos und natürlich das Fahren mit der Tram 28. Besonders gut gefallen hat mir aber auch die zurückhaltende, freundliche Art der Portugiesen und die schier endlose Zahl an kleinen, individuellen Restaurants, Cafes und sonstigen Geschäften. Die üblichen Gastronomie– und Modeketten sieht man nur vereinzelt. Die ganze Stadt wirkt unglaublich gepflegt und aufgeräumt. Da wir nur 2 Tage vor Ort waren, konnten wir leider nur einen kleinen Teil dieser wunderschönen, romantischen Stadt besichtigen. Zur Erkundung der Stadt ist eine sogenannte 24 Stunden Karte für 6, EUR sicherlich empfehlenswert. Das Metro– und Tram-​Netz ist überragend und sicherlich die bessere Alternative zum Laufen als das Auto. Denn Parkplätze sind rar und teuer. Diese Stadt ist ein Traum und absolut sehenswert, und gehört sicherlich zu den schönsten Städten der Welt.

Inzwischen waren wir schon mehrmals in Lissabon. Eine Woche reicht einfach nicht für all die Sehenswürdigkeiten aus.
Zu den Besonderheiten der Stadt gehören die Miradouros (Aussichtspunkte) von denen man einen herrlichen Blick über die Stadt bis auf den Tejo hat. Es gibt mehrere davon und jeder ist sehenswert.
Mit einer Tageskarte kann man alle Verkehrsmittel 24 Stunden lang nutzen, sowohl die berühmte Straßenbahn als auch Bus und Metro.
Die Metrostationen mit ihren Azulejos sind eine Sehenswürdigkeit für sich, ebenso die Elevadores (Aufzüge), durch die man die Höhenunterschiede zwischen einzelnen Stadtteilen leichter überwinden kann. Der schönste von ihnen ist der Santa Justa, mitten in der Fußgängerzone.

Lovely city, full of nuances, like all Portugal, from Viana de Castelo to Sagres, Salema, Obidos, Carrapateira. Beautiful beaches, hot weather in summer. Perfect place to get lost in motorhome.

wir waren eine woche mit unseren kindern in lissabon.
durch die tollen strassenbahn und metro verbindungen ist ein auto völlig überflüssig.
mit der 24 std. fahrkarte für 6.-EUR ist lissabon schnell und komfortabel zu erforschen.
alleine die oft monumentalen metrobahnhöfe sind sehenswert.
fußkrank und ohne kondition sollte ein Lissabonbesucher nicht sein.
treppauf bergab permanent aber nur so sieht man die interessanten ecken dieser stadt und man kann ssich treiben lassen.
eine tolle einzigartige stadt dessen flair die vielen ungekünstelten kleinigkeiten sind

Lissabon ist einladend, fröhlich und sehr bodenständig. Und immer drängt sich der Vergleich mit dem mondäneren und arroganteren Barcelona auf, was die Lissaboner furchtbar finden. Und sie brauchen den Vergleich nicht zu scheuen, denn auch wenn Lissabon keinen Gaudì aufzubieten hat, der Charme spricht für die portugiesische Stadt.
Die Menschen sind freundlich und durchweg hilfsbereit. Die Atmosphäre ist entspannt und doch von Aktivitäten geprägt.
Empfehlenswert ist eine Unterkunft mitten in Baixa oder Chiado. So ist man im Geschehen und ausgesprochen zentral. Wir hatten eine Ferienwohnung, die von Deutschland aus vermittelt wurde und wirklich wunderbar war.

Die Stadt ist wesentlich ruhiger und entspannter als z.B. Madrid oder Barcelona. Die Bausubstanz deutlich älter (aber auch teilweise verfallener). Der Reichtum (Kirchen, Paläste) der ehemaligen Kolonialmacht Portugal ist überwältigend. Wer zum ersten mal nach Lissabon fährt, sollte sich nicht von einem Stadtplan täuschen lassen! 500 Meter Distanz auf der Karte sind vor Ort durch ein beachtliches Gefälle wesentlich anstrengender als gedacht. Wer viel laufen möchte, ist mit festen Schuhwerk selbst in der Stadt gut ausgerüstet. Das Preisniveau liegt ca. 20% unter dem deutschen Level (Lebensmittel).

É a minha terra, cidade onde nasci, tenho pena de não morar lá, de preferência na Baixa! apesar de já conhecer outras capitais europeias, não troco lisboa por nenhuma delas!

Me encanta Lisboa!!!, en el hotel que me hospedo habitualmente son muy agradables y su trato y atención excelente, mañana volveré rumbo a viaje de negocios, aunque estemos aún en invierno es muy agradable salir a visitar también y la gente es muy amable.

Me encanta Lisboa!!! Ire dentro de un mes a pasar un findee. Me gusta la gastronomia, la ciudad, el ambiente y el clima aun en invierno :)

Ein typische Südländische Stadt. Schöné Gassen mit vielen Geschäften, Bars und Restaurants. Die quirlige Lebensfreude in der Stadt von den Portogiesen ist einfach sympathisch. Es gibt eine Bummelbahn die einen durch die Stadt führt. Der Eisenbetonturm ist ca. 20 m hoch und von dort aus hat man eine tolle Aussicht.

Certainly, a city to visit, with beautiful beaches, restaurants, landscapes, nice people, and uncountable monuments and museums.

Estive la um ano pelo studio, morei na Ajuada. Era um tempo muito boa na cidade fantastica. Cais do Sodré, Aqueduto das Àguas Livres, a Avenida da Liberdade, a Baixa, a Rua Augusta, o Rossio, as ruas em Alfama, Jardim de S. Pedro de Alcântara, o Bairro Alto, o Chiado, Jardim Botâncio, Mosteio dos Jerónimos e os pasteis de Belêm… e mais e mais…

A visiter absolument. Dans cette capitale européenne, le temps s’est arrêté. Quelques rues pavées à l’ombré des arbres, de vieux appartements en pierre et du linge qui sèche à la fenêtreAmbiance! C’est encore mieux sur un air de Fado, qui serait interprété par Maria Amalia.

Que vous soyez dans l’Alfama, la Baixa ou le Bairo Alto, vous ressentirez une ambiance de village, certes différente, mais tout aussi captivante. Et, dans tout les cas, vous serez subjugué par la chaleur humaine que possèdent les Lisboètes.
