Quinta da Regaleira

If you only have one day here, this is a must see beside the Pena Palace. The grounds are great for both exploring, and taking in many of the features. The well is pretty cool and you can walk all the way to the bottom. The water feature is great as you can take the bridge and stairs to the next level of the property. Just don’t get oo excited skipping across the rocks or you might fall in (just ask our 3 year old).
The café is a quaint little shop that offers a decent variety of food. There is both out door and indoor seating here and you don’t have to buy a ticket to access the café. So many amzing photo ops here and fun for the kids to climb the towers.

What a unique experience!
If you have been around the globe, you have seen some gardens and grounds.
Let me assure you this… you have seen NOTHING like this before!
This is a do NOT miss in Sintra by all means!
Plan to spend about 3 hours exploring the grounds, caves, gardens, and pathways along the Regaleria. Take a «torch» (lighter) to help navigate through the caves and bottom of the wells, you will thank me later!
Oh and… beware…the water is deep… and cold! Once again, take my word for it…;)
You will think that you have seen it all… and boom, you turn onto a new path and see something new! The waterfall is splendid, the stone walkway across the pond is magical; you can climb to the top of the tower and let down your hair!
Then when you are doing on the grounds… you can tour the house.
It’s a win win… and fun till the end!

Very cool place to visit! It’s so green! The spiraling well cannot be missed, as well as the tunnels! This is a great place to walk around, and it cannot be missed if you are in Sintra!

El las fotos sale mucho la torre invertida, pero este parque es muchísimo más. Es como si hace un siglo quisiesen hacer un parque temático del disfrute con sólo piedras, arboles y plantas… y lo consiguieron. Cuevas que te dejan en cualquier otro lado del parque, un castillito de decoración exquisita, la pared de cuarzo, etc etc. Cada céntimo de los 6 euros que se paga por entrar merece la pena, aparte también hay descuentos para estudiantes, etc.

Das «Quinta da Regaleira» ist wirklich einen Besuch wert; man kann in der Tat einen ganzen Tag darin verbringen und auch mit Kindern immer wieder Neues und Interessantes entdecken. Wer sich für die Hintergründe und die Geschichte näher interessiert und sich entsprechend vorbereitet, wird hier bestimmt nicht enttäuscht. Aber auch für einen kurzweiligen Tagesausflug ist diese Anlage geeignet.
Es ist empfehlenswert, eine Taschenlampe mit sich zu führen, um für eine ausreichende Beleuchtung in den Tunnelanlagen zu sorgen.

«Enchanted» and «whimsical» are fitting words to describe this UNESCO heritage site located 30 minutes north of Lisbon by train. For 6 euros you can explore endless acres of castles, gardens and tunnels.
I found Quinta da Regaleira on Pinterest as one of the top fairytale like villages in the world. To top it off, I was dying to see the well that you can see in many of the Unilocal images. Take your time to explore the castle and understand the purpose of the home and history of the property. The structures were not as old as I imagined. The cherry on top? Winding our way back down the hill to grab dinner in picturesque Sintra. A must-​see when in the Lisbon area. Wish we had reserved a couple of days for this attraction and village.

Great gardens/​grounds with a castle like home. A quick walk from town center and my kids loved exploring the wells, gardens, caves, small lakes. Beautiful space and a great place to explore, especially with kids. Also makes for beautiful photos. Full trip report and photos if you need on

Definetely a must see! I was feeling like heaven — the garden is the most beautiful place i ever saw .
Everey meters there is something different to watch. Even the cafeteria is magnifique !
Just go but dont be afraid to walk a bit as the park is big.

As of May 2015, 8 euros to enter (cash only). Expansive grounds to explore, including underground tunnels. Worth every euro. Act out your favorite scenes from game of thrones, just try not to spill any bodily fluids anywhere.

W-​O-​W! Put this one on your list. I’ve traveled around Europe and have seen castles and palaces… and at some point– they all blend together. And you get tired of them. And want something different. This was it. Totally unique and different! Well– the house/​palace part… boring and similar. And still under going restoration. It’s the grounds that you want to see.
You buy your ticket and walk in. The whole place has fragrant flowers to perfume the place. The fragrance was inviting and amazing. A sensory experience. Then you see the exterior of the house. Picture worthy. See the inside of the house last. Go towards the grotto or the waterfall. Only to find underground tunnels to explore! And such fun it is! They lead to a unfinished well and a spiral staircase up… amazing! Up on top, buildings are nestled around. Climb up or down. It’s easy to get lost… you will be amazed at it all. The grounds are massive.
After wandering head to the house. Interior is somewhat interesting, but there’s also areas where you can learn about the house and grounds and the inspiration for its creation…
Great place to visit! It really is like a fairyland…

Véritable palais des Merveilles situé à Sintra, un village qui vaut le détour en lui-​même, à peine à 40 minutes en train de Lisbonne.
Classé au Patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO, né manquez pas d’y faire un saut.
Même s’il y a plusieurs palais à visiter à Sintra, mon choix s’était porté sur la Quinta da Regaleira et je n’en suis pas déçue!
Prévoyez quand même une bonne partie de la journée pour voir tout ce que ce domaine a à cacher.
Il est possible d’y accéder facilement à pied depuis la gare, à un quart d’heure environ.
Éclectisme architectural et brin de folie vous attendent. Prenez le temps de chercher les recoins cachés, surtout dans les grottes (n’oubliez pas de prendre de la lumière, vous rateriez beaucoup de choses!). La liberté laissée au visiteur est très appréciable et le prix d’entrée vaut largement le coup.

Não há palavras para descrever a arte deste espaço. Visita obrigatória para quem passa por Sintra. Reservem algumas horas para ver tudo como deve ser, e não deixem de explorar as grutas subterrâneas que por lá existem.

I spent my birthday weekend in Lisbon, and I decided to make a day-​trip to Sintra, which is just a train-​ride from the center. There is so much to see in Sintra so I researched the top places to visit, and this one was #1 on all of the reviews and lists.
This place lived up to the hype. It is one of the most magical places I’ve ever seen. My friends and I were able to walk the entire estate in about 2.5 hours. I was mesmerized. My friends who came along were all boys, and they were amazed beyond their expectations.
I suggest getting to Sintra as early as 9am, and going to Quinta first — it’s the second closest tourist site to the train stop so you can just walk there. Once there, take a map, get your camera ready for amazing pictures, and enjoy! It is truly fantastic in every sense of the word. Loved it!

La Quinta da Regaleira c’est tout simplement à mes yeux la 8° merveille du monde ! Le phare d’Alexandrie et les jardins suspendus de Babylone n’ont qu’à se rhabiller (si cela est toutefois possible?) car ce lieu est une vraie splendeur !
Le palais est déjà magnifique et de l’extérieur, pose le décor: tout ici sera magique, alambiqué, farfelu et majestueux !
Et ces mots prennent tout leur sens lorsqu’on se perd dans le jardin (oui, perdez vous-​y, né cherchez pas à vous situer sur la carte, cela gâcherait le plaisir et les découvertes!).
Le jardin, donc, est merveilleux !
On monte une tour et d’étages en étages on découvre un nouveau point de vue sur la vallée de Sintra (sublime).
On entre dans une grotte et on se retrouve sous une cascade d’eau à gauche, dans un sous-​terrain à droite.
On descend dans une tour inversée, on lève les yeux…27 mètres d’escaliers en colimaçon !
On emprunte un chemin et on se retrouve devant une chapelle.
Grottes, souterrains, tours, puits… entre terre et ciel !
Alice aux pays des merveilles n’aurait pas rêvé mieux comme terrain de jeu !
L’après-midi la plus enchanteresse de ma vie je la dois à la Quinta da Regaleira !

If you see one thing in Sintra, come here. It is all the hype.
Take one of the hop on hop off buses from the train station (434 or the red one) and walk about 10 minutes from the National Palace. There is a stop for this just south of the park.
For some reason, it’s not part of the network of parks in the area, and you need to pay extra but it’s worth every penny.
There is the Palace on the top, but you’ll be spending most of your time in the expansive garden. Approach it this way, if it looks like a path, it is most likely a path ~if it doesn’t look like a path, it is a path.
There are so many twists and turns here, small nooks and cave, underground tunnels and wells in places you would not expect. Bring a phone or flash light!
Inside the palace is an exhibit about the architect and a showing of his designs. Turns out this place was built quite recently only in the last 100 years. Its very well preserved so far.
We ran around like little kids in a theme park, but all natural fillwed with small towers, nooks and crannies. This would be perfect place for hide and seek or tag.
Look to spend at least 2 to 3 hours here.

Quinta da Regaleira was one of my favorite places that I visited in Portugal. Being 30 minutes from Lisbon, Sintra should be an automatic destination.
It’s a magical residence comprised of distinct off white stones. If you look closely enough, you might see symbols that appear runic. I explored the house, the ground, the grottos, the tunnels, the lagoon with its stepping stones, the spiral staircase.
You must visit. If you have time, add the other castles to your list.

Ein wahrhaft fantastischer Ort, wie aus einem Märchen nur dass er real ist.

Sehr schön am besten wenn man sich mit der Freimauerei beschäftigt das hilft dabei. aber sollte man gesehen haben unterhalb ist noch né alte Villa mit See und einem schwarzen Schwanen paar.

Ein wirklich magischer Ort. Der Besucher wird von einer tollen Anlage mit Grotten, Teichen, Türmchen, Brunnen, geheimnisvollen Gängen und vielem mehr verzaubert. Etwas enttäuschend fand ich das Schloss, die anderen Sachen sind das Eintrittsgeld wert.

Wer einmal in Lissabon war und nicht die Quinta da Regalia in Sintra gesehen hat, sollte die Klippen hinuntergeworfen werden!
Stellt Euch vor, ein Michael Jackson um 1900 hat so viel Geld, um sich ein eigenes Wunderland zu bauen und holt sich einen detailversessenen Bühnenbildner, um einen riesigen Park und einen alten Palast umbauen zu lassen.
Heraus kommt eine Anlage, in der Du Dich fühlst wie Alice im Wunderland. Der Park ist wirklich riesig und in einen Hang hineingebaut. Er besteht buchstäblich (!) nur aus überwucherten Verschnörkelungen, verwunschenen Wäldchen, Rapunzeltürmen, Grotten mit Irrgärten, unterirdische Türme mit Geheimgängen und Guckluken in irgendwelche anderen liebevoll gestalteten Räume. In diesem Garten gibst Du irgendwann das Fotographieren auf (ich musste schon vorher aufgeben, weil mein Akku schnell leer war, weil ich im Dunkeln einer Grotte nur mit Blitzlicht wieder herausgefunden habe).
Auf schmalen Treppen, verwachsenen Steinbänken, zwischen Fabelwesen und Gottheiten aus Stein vermutet man ständig, auf Prinzessinnen und Abenteurer zu treten, aber es sind nur andere Touristen und jeder hat ein breites Lächeln auf den Lippen.
Die Villa ist an und für sich schon der Hammer, aber verblasst gegen die Gartenanlagen (natürlich mit Kapelle, Jugendstil-​Gewächshaus usw.). Und: Man weiß, dass alles, was man noch in seinem Leben an romantischer Landschaftsarchitektur wird sehen können, öde aussehen wird. Dagegen ist Neuschwanstein ein Luftschutzbunker im Ödland.
Es kommt einem vor wie nach einem halben Jahr, aber nach 3 – 4 Stunden ist man völlig fertig und reizüberflutet. Man fürchtet, dass einem der Kopf platzt, wenn man noch irgendwo eine florale Verzierung oder ein Fin-​de-​Siecle-​Möbelstück sehen sollte. Ich freute mich auf 4 Stunden stumpfes Autobahnfahren

La maison est toute petite comparé au jardin. Mais quel jardin Sublimissime. J’adore j’adore j’adore !

A must see place! The location is marvellous, the exhibition about the architect who built the house inside the building is very interesting, the garden fantastic in the real sense of the word. The windows of the house open to wide views of the surrounding landscape and the town of Sintra.
However, the walk through the park might be a little challenging for people with handicaps.
Parking space close to the palace is usually not available — you need to park in the center of Sintra and walk (5 — 10 mins) or take some transport.

La demeure en elle même né présente pas un grand intérêt mais par contre le jardin est assez extraordinaire: des tours, des puits, des passages souterrains, une chapelle, un terrain de tennis XIXeme, des fontaines, des statues, des jardins …
On aime à se perdre dans cette immense propriété et découvrir une bizarrerie au détour d’un chemin … idéal pour les enfants ou pour ceux qui ont une âme d’indiana jones :-).

Même sous la pluie battante, la visite de la Quinta da Regaleira est indispensable. Les quintas, sont des domaines bourgeois privés. Il y en a beaucoup à Sintra.
Le domaine de la Regaleira s’étend sur 4 hectares et comprend un palais et un vaste jardin. De la plus haute tour du château, on a une vue imprenable sur la ville. Côté architectural, de nombreuses allusions sont faites à la franc-​maçonnerie.
Le jardin est charmant et exotique. Un espace de verdure où on aime se perdre. Il y a des grottes, des passages souterrains, un puits
Le domaine tient son nom de sa première propriétaire, Ermelinda Allen Monteiro de Almeda. A la fin du XIXe siècle, il est vendu au riche Antonio Monteiro, qui en fait le lieu délirant que l’on connait aujourd’hui. L’architecte Luigi Manini a largement contribué à l’oeuvre!

If you are in Sintra you have to come to this gem garden. I have been there for 5 times now and I love going there. Firstly it’s it location, it is situated in the idilic Sintra-​Cascais Park, the equivalent of Britain’s Area Of Outsanding Beauty. When you arrive there you will see. It isn’t only Quinta da Regaleira that will wow you.
This is a Romantic piece of art (I can’t almost call it a garden, it feels so much more than that), that it is still used by the Masonic Order of Portugal to perform their rituals in the Initiation Well. The garden is quite big and in its boundaries you will find at least 4 caves and wells, which I still haven’t explore (for the exception for the initiation well) due to a lack of light and the fact that it scared my pants off.
The garden was built at the turn of the 20^th century in the romantic ideal of the owner, Antonio Augusto Carvalho Monteiro, in conjunction with the talent of the scenographer-​architect Luigi Manini. In the complex you can visit a little chapel designed by Manini and a small château-​like palace that houses a small exhibit of the owner of the property.
The only reason why I didn’t give it 5 stars was the price, I still thought it a bit expensive for it. I happily pay it because I love the place but if you are on a tight budget I would recommend you to walk around Sintra and go up the hill to the Palácio da Pena.
