Xocoa

So it’s 4pm in the afternoon and you’ve been walking all day. You are still full from a hefty lunch but it’s still definitely too early for dinner so you are looking for a snack. Then there’s advertisements of churros and melted chocolate. Your eyes open wide and your stomach starts to growl so you step into a shop. I stepped into Xocoa. The place is located in one of the many street near Las Ramblas. The place has a number of tables and wait for it. free WiFi! A traveler’s only wish when using all this data to get around. The servers are there immediately to greet you and provide you with a menu. I came here for one thing only. Churros and chocolate. So I ordered that assuming it’s one dish but nope, it’s really two items but whatever. The churros are already made and they just add additional sugar on top. On the side you get a pretty hefty sized glass of chocolate. In terms of the taste of the churros, I thought they were too crispy and not as hot as I would’ve liked. They come in bows so you get to play with the food a bit while breaking the churro in two. The chocolate was very velvety and rich. Mill chocolate with a hint of the dark chocolate flavor. There is definitely enough chocolate for the churros that you could possibly order another order of churros but if you don’t want to do that, Xocoa understands people’s chocolate obsession and provides a little spoon so you can pretty much just scoop out melted chocolate to eat.
What makes this place a 4 star place is the service. There were 3 servers during the hour or so that I was there and I felt that the service was on point. Always willing to help and super quick in getting your order or anything else you need. The restrooms also very clean, so if you need to go, it’s a good place.
Again, the churros are not the best I’ve had imo but I think they were decent. The chocolate was better than the churros but they work well together. The service and free wifi makes this place bumped up that star. A great place to take a break from the hustle of Barcelona.

We had 5 churros with chocolate (€ 5) and they were OK, but overall it was a disappointing experience. It took forever to get these churros, we found them quite expensive, and the place is very touristy.

Hidden gem in Barcelona. Initially walked past it and used Google Maps to direct us back to what we were looking for, Churros! The café was pretty dead when we walked in so I wasn’t sure if we were at the right spot. It’s more like a little gourmet chocolate shop than anything. Asked if they sold Churros and were told to grab a seat.
We were presented with a deliciously warm cup of melted chocolate which was better than I had expected. The chocolate was not overly sweet and was sooooo easy to finish! If you’ve had Angelina Chocolate before this is 10x better as the one from Angelina is excessively sweet but this had just the right balance. The churros ended up really just being a vessel to scoop the chocolate with. Highly recommend popping by though if in the area to get your fix.

So so hard to find on this hidden narrow Carrer, but well worth it! The xurros con xocolata was simply delicious! They serve 4 – 5 and a generous cup of melted chocolate in which to dip. it’s so good and not as overly rich or indulgent as I initially feared. This place smells great when you walk in, the people are friendly, and the whole experience is just very pleasant! Xocoa was highly recommended by a loyal patron and I was so happy when I finally found Carrer de Petrixol (after asking several people)! The café con leche was also good. It’s not cheap in cost (comparatively), but, it’s also not cheap in its quality or charming vibe. Definitely worth a stop!

Super cute little bakery shop. We stopped by just to grab something sweet since we were both really craving some tasty chocolate. Decided on the Xurros y chocolat. The chocolate was very good; however, the xurros were a little bit stale. I think they had fried them up earlier and they gave us what was left, which is more than what we ordered, so that was nice – but fresh and hot would have been better.
The lady at the counter was very friendly and helped me with my broken spanish/​catalan. I’d like to come back to try one of those cake ball things!

The hot chocolate here is out of this world. The gluten-​free «churros» (magdalenes?) are such a nice treat and go so well with the hot chocolate! Love that the drink is thick like pudding and not too sweet – I get it Swiss style so I can mix in some of the thick, real whipped cream. We LOVE this place and have been a number of times in the few months we have lived in Barcelona.

First stop in Barcelona and boy it did not disappoint! This place is absolutely adorable. Walking in, you are greeted by happy faces and tons of chocolate. We sat down and a very sweet lady came to take our order. My husband decided to order churros and hot cocoa and I asked for a soy cappucino and a truffle ball.
My soy cappucino was delicious — so yummy and creamy. The truffle ball was out of this world. The chocolated melted in my tongue as soon as I bit into it, and the dark chocolate was strong enough without being too bitter — just perfect!
I had to steal a couple of churros from my husband’s plate. They were recently fried and were still warm. I did not like the thickness of the hot cocoa (which served both as a drink and a dipper for the churros) so I skipped it and had the churros with just powdered sugar instead. I thought they were perfect like that. Not too sweet, not too heavy. I couldve ate a whole basket, but decided to pace myself because there plenty of other Spanish treats to indulge in.
My husband really liked his hot cocoa, he really enjoyed the thickness of it (it resembled pudding).
We said we would return for more, but unfortunately did not make it back before heading out of Barcelona. Im really bummed we didn’t return because it was one of my favorite bites in Spain.
If you want yummy churros, good service and decent prices, this is the place to go!

De vez en cuando me gusta ir a la calle Petritxol a merendar el típico chocolate caliente con churros. Las granjas La Pallaresa y Dulcinea son las opciones más clásicas (e igualmente buenas), pero yo quizás me quedo con Xocoa, porque además de los típicos churros, melindros, ensaimadas o croissants, también tiene una amplia variedad de pasteles (de zanahoria, de limón, red velvet, de chocolate…) y otros dulces, donde destacan todos los que elaboran con chocolate. Yo, de todos los productos que hacen, me quedo sin lugar a dudas con el «ventall» clásico (que es el de trufa; también lo hay con frambuesa)
El local, aunque no lo parezca desde fuera, es bastante grande, con dos salones interiores. Y el servicio es muy atento. En definitiva, un buen sitio donde pasar un rato agradable mientras degustas alguno de sus dulces.

This was our first stop in Barcelona, and holy moly was it setting the bar high for the rest of the trip. After finding it on Unilocal we made our way through some winding back streets and arrived at this quaint little coffee/​dessert shop. What was on the menu? Hot chocolate and churros of course.
Now you can probably tell from my photo that the hot chocolate was more like a hot chocolate pudding. That doesn’t sound appetizing as a type it, but I pinky promise it is. It came in a little tea cup and had a thick film on top. You had to pop it with your spoon and then the gooey chocolate pours out. This is like eggs Benedict level food porn — except it’s warm chocolate (which in my opinion is sexier).
With my mind blown I relied on my instincts and what I did next was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Right up there with asking my now wife to be my girlfriend and applying for an internship with Unilocal… this was a life changing moment in my life. I dipped the churros in the hot chocolate. The creamy chocolate coated the churro like a thick layer of paint. Now, I have no idea if this is how the locals eat this… but if they don’t they should.
Super nice woman at the counter walked us through ordering and explained some of the chocolate truffles that my wife ended up getting (and I snagged a bite of). The place is small with only a couple of tables. It seems most people take their treats to go. There’s a ton of baked goods that are easy to eat on the go.

Buen sitio para tomar un café con pastelería de chocolate. Fuimos un día festivo y tuvimos que hacer un poco de cola, pero una vez dentro el servicio fue muy atento y eficaz.
Tomé un capuchino y estaba rico. Luego un dulce de chocolate con pistacho que no le iba a la zaga. En resumen, una buena elección, de calidad muy parecida a los otros locales que hay en la calle Petritxol.
Quizás podrían esmerarse más en la decoración del local.

Knowing that churros & chocolate was a local staple we began our hunt. We were recommended this place by some locals, which in my opinion is always the way to go!
I had a large group with me, which I know can be a pain! We accepted we couldn’t sit together and ordered separately so we wouldn’t overwhelm the counter. Even with that, the place was packed and staff was overwhelmed.
While the churros were amazing and the chocolate divine, not all of us got our food together or at all at some point. Communication was tricky and since I was with a younger crowd the staff thought they were lying. Ultimately it got fixed but it was the longest snack break we ever took!
If you can, order to go to save the hassle since the place is always busy!

I wandered into here with two other travelers from my hostel. Our tour guide said that the street that this place is on he likes to call «churro street» because there is a large concentration of churros spots and you can smell the chocolate when strolling down the street.
The churros were a bit harder than the ones I’m used to from Mexico. We were a little surprised when the woman at the counter said you can’t get just one, which was fine because we split them and they were smaller than others I’ve had. The chocolate was extremely rich. We were all in a chocolate coma when we finished. It was a good sweetness level, yet still muy rico.
The café was cute and they have other desserts too. I believe they spoke English, but I translated to the other people in my group instead.

Found this place while on the hunt for churros y chocolate. It did not disappoint! The churros were warm and fresh and the chocolate was the perfect amount of rich and creamy without being too overwhelming. Great spot for a quick coffee and snack break!

A great place run and loved by locals. Family owned and is the oldest chocolate & churros stop in Barcelona. My tour guide suggested it and I’m so thankful that he did. They don’t speak English but will work with you as you try your best Catalan/​Spanish.
The chocolate & churros are good, and are of course the classic must-​have while in Barcelona. Maybe not the most delicious meal of the trip, but it certainly was the one I’ll remember the longest.
Also — it is Cash Only!

Their churros are great, like everyone else said. They’re light and crispy and not overly sweet, and go quite well with the hot chocolate, which is smooth and rich and everything you could hope for in a dipping hot chocolate. Reasonable for hot chocolate — split a bill of 7.5 euros for two.

Had churros. Nice and crunchy, not too sweet! It actually tastes a bit like warm chocolate pudding.

Great friendly owner and staff! Their dipping hot chocolate is smooth and sweet but not overly sweet. The texture is just perfect and doesn’t turn into a pudding like mess which I’ve had in other places.
They don’t make their own churros, I saw an elderly man passing them a paper bag of churros while we were waiting for our churros. Wherever they’re getting the churros from is amazing with the dipping chocolate. It’s nice and crispy and not too heavy.
I’ve been here twice within the same week and my husband said it’s the best cortado he’d had so far in our trip in Barcelona!

Tucked away from all the hustle and bustle of Barcelona is Xocoa, a cute little chocolate/​bakery on a small side street off of La Rambla. I actually heard about this place because it was on the «hidden street of chocolate,» and well, I really, really like chocolate, so obviously I had to check it out.
I initially walked by the place but came back because my sister and I wanted to try churros y chocolate for the first time. So we grabbed a little table and ordered the churros and chocolate!
The churros were delicious and topped with sugar. Sometimes the churros don’t come with sugar on top, which can either be a great thing or a bad thing depending on how quickly you want to go into a diabetic coma. I was onboard with this plan so I didn’t mind the extra sugar at all. The churros were cooked perfectly and the sugar complemented them very well.
The chocolate here is a little different than the other chocolate I had in Spain, mostly because it was milk chocolate and not as dark as the kind I had at San Gines. It was still pretty good, however — perfectly thick and wonderful to dip the churros in.
The two women working at the shop were both very friendly.
The bakery was full of amazing looking treats including these massive chocolate/​rice balls. I don’t know what they were actually called but they looked intense and amazing. I would have gotten one, but I was worried I wouldn’t be able to finish it. I’m being 1000% serious when I say they might have been as large as my head.
Great experience, cute place. Would recommend to all who want to try some baked goods in Barca and don’t want to be surrounded by crowds and crowds of people.

What I really wanted to do that day was eat churros — affordable & chocolatey churros. My cousin Di & I tried to find this famous churros place somewhere beyond the tourist areas, & we ended up somewhere with not many people on the streets & too many graffiti on the walls. Di started freaking out, & I told her she’s just not used to big cities like BCN, NYC, LA (love ya, Di!). I checked my List of Food Places to Try in BCN, & we ended up in this ‘safe’ haven within the Barri Gotic.
I ordered their churros & got a chocolate ball to-​go. The churros were nice, warm & crunchy outside, soft inside. The chocolate dip was fine, but not superb — a tad too sweet. We returned here a second time, after our trip to Rome & Paris, & at this point my cousin said she noticed they most probably get their churros from the nearby Xurreria.
Disculpa, but the dark chocolate ball was disappointing. I remember thinking I could just as well have eaten the wrapping paper it came in, because that’s what I thought it tasted like. Was it worth its price of € 3+? No. It was big, but neither sweet nor chocolate-​y enough. The service was fantastic — our server (female) was really, really nice, & I feel kinda bad writing this review because of how nice she was.
We stayed at a BNB, & I remember asking our host if there are chocolate places worth visiting in BCN. In my mind, I kind of associated chocolates with Spain, because of Spanish (hot) chocolate & I specifically remember reading 1 Barcelona BNB review wherein the host said his apartment was near some chocolate factory, & that you could literally smell the chocolate wafting through the air, from his apartment. But Barcelona is Catalonia, & our host said, «We’re not really a chocolate country — we get our chocolate from Switzerland, France, etc.»
As you walk around the Barri Gotic area, you’ll find yourself tired after having done a ton of shopping. You’ll come across Xocoa, & you will stop to check out their store design (which is quite nice, really). If it’s raining, you’ll find yourself thinking you want a cup of their hot cocoa, or 1 of the many chocolate products they offer.
Maybe their chocolates for sale (I saw flavors like Wasabi, framboise, etc.) are good. Maybe the other stuff on their menu is good. Not sure, because I didn’t buy any, but for what they charge, I really did expect better chocolate quality.

On peut y acheter des gourmandises à emporter et se balader dans le charmant quartier mais aussi s’installer aux petites tables à l’intérieur pour faire son goûter…
La boutique est toute mignonne, située dans une très jolie rue piétonne. L’accueil était charmant. Difficile de choisir, il y a du chocolat, des pâtisseries, des viennoiseries… mon cookie 3 chocolats était très bon.
J’ai aussi acheté une sorte de rocher au chocolat (j’ai pris une photo qu’il faut que j’upload) avec à l’intérieur plein de mini-​cookies et une boule de chocolat au lait fondant… MMMH! trop bon! et les calories, j’en parle même pas!

This is not a restaurant, but a great café and coffee shop to buy some chocolate. I am not even sure what kind of meals they serve here, but they do offer many sweet snacks that all hit the spot. Located just a block from all of the action from Las Ramblas and other shopping areas, but you feel a world away.
Tip
Basically come here and get some churros. And get some chocolate to take home with you.

Fabulous chocolate shop that has so many goodies in it. Great ambience and service. Only disappointment was chewy churros and ok chocolate dipping sauce :-(will come back to try more things here.

Vor meinem ersten Barcelona-​Trip wurde mir dieser Laden ans Herz gelegt. «Absolutes Pflichtprogramm.» Solch einer warmen Empfehlung wird natürlich Folge geleistet und das nun bei jedem Besuch. :) Schon alleine wegen der ‘schokigen’ Kaffeebohnen.

Paraíso para glotones chocolateros en la calle más chocolatera de Barcelona, la calle Petríxol. Esta calle es el auténtico epicentro chocolatero de Barcelona, el sitio que lleva cientos de años alimentando con chocolate a niños y mayores. En sus granjas se servía el mejor chocolate de desecho de la ciudad: no es extraño, pues, que Xocoa eligiera esta calle para instalar su primera sede. Tampoco lo es que la haya mantenido, a pesar de haber cerrado otras tiendas. Para mí, no es que Xocoa sea la mejor tienda de chocolate, pero hay reconocerle el mérito de haber dado la vuelta a este preciadísimo alimento.

A ver, a ver qué Xocoa vuelve a ser cafetería… Fui a comprar mi dosis mensual de chocolate y qué me encontré!!! Yo que era asidua dominguera del Xocoa cuando, os acordáis?, era una antigua cafetería larga hasta al fondo con miles de mesas y miles de cafés y chocolates… Con esas tartas a la entrada que te quitaban el suspiro… Y cuando la cambiaron por otro modelo de negocio… es como si se perdiera parte del encanto de Petritxol.
Y ahora ha vuelto!!! Bueno, más moderna, más renovada, más minimalista y chic, pero ha vuelto, no? Ahora solo falta que no me decepcione el servicio y que cuando me siente, pueda recuperar algo de aquellas mañanas en este especial rinconcito ;)

Lo malo de los sitios con una leyenda chocolatera a sus espaldas como el Xocoa es que el servicio suele ser lento. Fui con unas amigas de la universidad una tarde a compartir unos bizcochos con chocolate. Los productos de chocolate de esta tienda son increíbles, sobrehumanos, en cualquiera de sus formas. Podrían bañar basura en chocolate y yo haría cola para comprarla. Pero no es un lugar tranquilo para mantener una buena conversación. Mucha gente, mucho ajetreo. Vale, es el precio que hay que pagar por una buena merendola, pero no lo recomiendo para ir demasiadas veces. Lejos del centro hay sitios para disfrutar de una buena tarde, aunque no con un chocolate tan excelente. Iremos al infierno por comer algo tan bueno.
