Yesterday, I discovered another gem-of-a-store on Missionsstrasse just down from the Spalentor. Gingi, a wee shop dedicated to selling items devoid of animal products, has come at a good time for the ever growing no. of vegans to be found in Switzerland. Having only opened mid-August, the shop has a fresh feel to it and the on-site owner(the place is run by a couple) was terribly helpful and extremely friendly. Although the shop is quite small, the owners have managed to fill every conceivable space with product. Among other things one finds: pet food, baking ingredients, sweets, beverages, refrigerated and canned goods, cleaning products and foot wear. Not being vegan, but liking tofu, yeast extract, non-dairy drinks and such, I will seek out shops like this one when traveling. For the American vegan/vegetarian abroad who is visiting Basel, this store is a god-send. As gingi is the first 100% vegan shop to open in town, the Basler vegans must be very happy indeed!
