Apparently this neighbourhood is known for its many kebab places. But it’s also an area where the typical young & urban Istanbulite — who usually hang out in Taksim, Cihangir, Besiktas or Ortoköy — doesn’t often travel to: it’s the more conservative area of Istanbul and thus you won’t find alcohol on the menu… But in fact it’s well worth a trip for it’s kebab shops: there’s plenty of them and just walking by them made my mouth salivate with anticipation of the meaty feast. Ideally you come here with a local and simply let them do the ordering. But if you’re here out on your own, this is what you should do: order some meze(bread, tomato/chilli sauce, fresh salad and yogurt sauce). Then, if you want to try a bit of everything you could go with the mixed kebab, which literally has a bit of everything. But, I highly recommend the pistachio köfte — they we’re really nice. I also suggest ordering Ayram(drinkable yogurt), which comes in a silver bowl and with a ladling spoon. Makes sure to say yes to the çay that they offer at the end of the meal and if you’ve still got some room, also try out some of their desserts.
