A couple of weeks ago I said goodbye to all kind of meat, for good. I wanted to do it properly, so I wanted some fish and chips. As I am a newbie in the Wylde Green area, i asked some advices about the Chip shops around. Everybody told me that Atlantis would be a nice option. Even it is a considerably new place in the area. Open in 2010. I have to say that the size of the queue in the place indicated me it would be a good experience. Atlantis is also a Chip shop to eat in. There are tables and a nice vibe inside. it’s a big place, in fact. I may go back there in some point and try the experience of eat inside a Fish and Chip shop. Unusual, I guess. The service is quick and really nice. We spent less than 10 minutes waiting to be served and there were about 15 people in front of us. No joke. I love the cod. I have to say. But the chips itself were a bit dry. It’s a good sign, if you think about your health. Not soggy but just dry. Not the best but yet a good Fish n’ chips experience and I do recommend it in the area.

In all my years stuffing my face full of fast food, I’ve never came across a chippy quite so chic, or upmarket as this place. The embossed wooden sign above the entrance instantly gives Atlantis a fresh, modern look and once inside, it feels more mid-range restaurant than high street takeaway, with walls lined with decorative pebbles, pictures of freshly caught fish all round and a giant, four-piece picture of a British seaside town somewhere. Oh, and that’s just the waiting area. Delve deeper into the store and the nautical theme continues with a very attractive indoor seating area, made up of inviting wooden booths, decorative brick-work, old-fashioned clocks and framed pictures of boats, fishermen and allsorts. The interior of this place is truly stunning when you consider its merely a local chippy, but unfortunately, the food isn’t quite as catch-of-the-day fresh as you might hope. On my visit, the chips I purchased were rock hard and the cod meat was full of lumps of grey. I’d think if I had to label it, I’d go for 10 out of 10 for layout and atmosphere, and 4 out of 10 for food quality.

My brother lives just around the corner from this place and it is our Chip Shop of choice when I go over to visit and watch the football. It’s also based along the small stretch of shops that is Wylde Green, which always makes me think of the 1950s, for some reason — and perhaps that’s why the Fish and Chips taste so good from this place — it somehow feels right to be eating something that connects you to a shared past. Before I get too philosophical I should perhaps tell you that the food here is always excellent and the service is friendly. Given the way in which the food you’re eating is cooked in such places, some chip shops leave you feeling a bit greasy and dirty, but this place clearly do something others don’t as the food is crisp, fresh and… leaves you feeling like you’ve eaten something healthy, which is a rare treat. It’s reasonably priced, too, so I’d heartily recommend this place.

We’ve all become very patriotic of late, what with that torch doing the rounds and the Diamond Jubilee. Well, there’s nothing more that says this is Britain than the nations dish. Fish ‘n’ Chips! We need no longer to be embarrassed about this finest of foods, not when you have chip shops that take their responsibilities seriously. Atlantis is one such place. Not only do they serve quality fish ‘n’ chips but they offer a gluten free menu too. I was impressed with a number of certificates hanging around the shop I visited. One proudly displayed they had won the«Seafish Friers Quality Award», I learned that this award is for frying skills, hygiene and top quality food. Well done guys, I’ll be back.
