Dhillons Cafe & Fish Bar

When I first moved the the #JQ I popped in here with my removal blokes before we did the great unpack and we scoffed delicious fish and chips with a huge mug of tea each. I was pretty much a regular until I moved over the other side of the #JQ.
Now that was likely 2005 and things looked very different, not only in the area itself but in this classic local chippy! Since then it’s been through a few owners who’ve each changed things quite a bit. The current owners have been here maybe 3 years (could be more or less!) and they’ve changed things the most.
It’s kinda scruffy and unorganised in the public areas but seems to run like a fine sewing maching behind the counter. You never need wait long for your scoff. I pop in maybe twice a month, sometimes for the F&C splurge and lunchtime and sometimes for breakfast (tho there are better options like CCs or Hylton Café, but perhaps not cheaper!)
Service is kinda grumpy but that’s Ok. Chips can be great and can be just average and undercooked. Pot luck really. The fish is decent quality and usually tasty. There’s plenty of soft drink choices if they’ve bothered to order in. Last year they had cheap ‘copy cat’ style ice creams for sale too — pretty tasty! All in, you get what you’d expect and while quality and service are not top of the agenda for the money it’s hard to complain!

Dhillons is a solid chippy in the heart of the JQ. It offers well priced and non-​fussy British fare (artery clogging stuff), which can be eaten in or taken out. I’ve always had pretty good stuff from here, but the local consensus is that the food can be greasy and not as fresh as you might like… 2 large chips, 2 Saveloy and 2 Pickled eggs (if, like me, you like that kind of thing) comes to about £6.50. Warning though, the large portions are very large!

If there is something I really appreciate in UK is the traditional and good fish and chips. I have my local chippy shop here in Walsall and it’s well know as a good and cheap one, but sometimes you just cannot resist trying new tasty around.
Well, Dhillons is one of these places to be recommended. As a an well known establishment placed in Jewellery Quarter, Dhillons has a faithful clientele but also attract people who are busy shopping in the area and just fancy a good takeaway now and then.
it’s cheap place and the fish and chip itself is quite succulent. No grease and really nice and crisp battered fish. Yummy and just mouthwatering!
Honestly, I always find an excuse to go for a fish & chips and Dhillons has plenty of reasons to be a place to eat in Jewellery Quarter. A very clean and tidy takeaway with a nice staff and vast food and drink menu too.

Dhillon’s used to be sooo much better, with amazing cheesy chips and a great busy vibe all the time. Sadly this has declined somewhat over recent years. It’s still a great place to eat. They have a take-​away and eat in section with a wide range of choices and maybe it’s all this choice that has left their chips not as good as they used to be. Or maybe it was when they expanded and changed the colour scheme from cheery yellow to dark blue.
If you want cheap and hearty then this is a great place to grab something and it’s one of the better producers for a good Jacket Spud in the Jewellery Quarter. I wouldn’t necessarily expect the cheerful though. Whilst the staff are polite, they don’t go out of their way in the customer service stakes and if you pay too much attention the mood could be contagious.

Dhillons are amazing — taking up a whole corner right by the clock tower, they have a tonne of seating inside if you’re out and about wandering the JQ and want something cheap and cheerful for lunch. but better than that, for those of us resident in the area, they do delicious takeaway that is more than just fish and chips wrapped in paper. I’d actually go so far as to say they do the BEST jacket potatoes in the Jewellery Quarter — ones that have been cooked forever so they have super thick crispy skins, and caramelly buttery cooked potato inside. YUM.
They have a menu you can take with you, which lists the massive range of fillings and options — they do other meals you can eat in or take away, and their chips are always hot and delicious. I love Dhillons, I just don’t love how it enables me to have amazing chips whenever I fancy when I’m at work!
