The Lord Clifden

I can honestly say in all of the years I have been coming here, I have never had a bad experience! I Unassuming from the street, when you step inside you see how it mixes the traditional boozer vibe with lots of new, cool elements. It also has one of the best, if not the best, garden in central Birmingham with a bar, a space for a dj which is fantastic in the summer months and plenty of seating and shelter for when the weather is not as desirable!
A group of us visited on Friday and it was bloody good! We came here for food and the staff found us a good table as it’s always very busy in here (a good sign!). A friend and I shared the jerk chicken sharer with fries and coleslaw, with all components of the dish being absolutely delicious. I had a few pints of lager, all decently priced for the environment and there is a large selection of beverages behind the bar. The staff were very helpful and friendly as always and I look forward to coming again!

I really enjoyed it at the lord clifden! It looks like a traditional pub from the outside but is so cool from the inside. It is seperated into small areas which calms down the noise and makes it cosy. They have a large seating area outside which is good for the summer. My meal tasted really good and every other meal the staff brought out of the kitchen looked fab too. A big thank you to Dan the Community Manager for organising!

Fantastic pub, looks very traditional from the front but once your inside you have a front room and a back room followed by an awesome beer garden complete with outdoor bar and BBQ. Look out for the art on the walls there are some awesome original pieces and expect it to be relatively busy on Saturday nights with a young trendy crowd of people up for a good time.

I loved the Clifden for years — it was the pub where me and my mates would meet to pick over there goings on of the night before.
The food is great usually although service can be sporadic on a hot summers day —
Which brings to another selling point. The massive beer garden and outside bar (bbq too in the summer).
It has a range of music on over the weekend so something for everyone but does charge £5 in on a Saturday night so I tend to avoid it then as I shouldn’t have to pay to go toy local & probably as it has got so popular it doesn’t attract the best crowd on a weekend in my opinion. If you go on a sunny bank holiday weekend be prepared for the busyness! On a week night though you can’t get much better!

Great pub with good food and drink. One of my favourite pubs in Birmingham and I definitely enjoy the friendly atmosphere. The bar staff are great and the service is brilliant.
In the summer is when you get the most out of this place with the beer garden which has live bands and a DJ. I was there when the Jazz festival was going on and amazed by the performances and people dancing away enjoying and having fun. There’s also a table tennis and games options to play outside if you fancy some competition with friends.
The pub gives a modern mixed traditional feel with the overall design which is great and you have adults from all different age groups mixing well together. I definitely recommend this pub to anyone. Do give it a visit, you won’t be disappointed.

The Lord Clifden has to be one of my favourite places in Birmingham. It’s located a short walk out of the city centre in the Jewellery Quarter area boasting a large well designed outdoor space as well as two fantastic bar areas.
For my lunch today I had the 5oz sirloin steak, this was accompanied by some seriously special hand cut chips, watercress and peppercorn sauce. The whole meal was packed full of flavour and fantastically presented. The service was also excellent… I really can’t fault it!
The Lord Clifden on weekends is a firm favourite amongst my friendship group. If you haven’t been before you can take advantage of the varied selection of beers and ales, as well as enjoying the local DJ’s playing a mix of classic funk, soul and disco. My advice is to get down early on weekends to get in for free. There is usually a small charge for admission on both Fridays and Saturday nights starting around 10pm.

Well, I genuinely cannot believe that I have not reviewed The Lord Clifden before now, I was convinced that I had.
First off, I love this place, look at the score. There are many many reasons why I have given it the score that I have. Now I might seem a little biased because I — sort of — work with them, I host the super popular quiz there on a Thursday.
Thats aside and fairly, I will go through what I love about this pub. Firstly and most noticeably is that the beer garden is immense. Outside (where there is still quite a lot of cover just in case) there are 2 bars, a bbq, decks, a table tennis table, lots of TVs and lots of seating. The vibe out there is always amazing. I went there recently for quite a big football match and whilst it was rammed outside the atmosphere was till brilliant.
The food, this place is brilliant for food, I happen to know the chef quite well and he was due to leave a little while ago but i think there was some heavy encouragement for him to stay and there is a good reason for that. This is good food, nothing too flash done well! The price is spot on for what it is. Its that good, it keeps you coming back.
Beers, selection is excellent, tonnes of great ales and ciders, one of the very few places in Birmingham you can get a Cider Slushie. It may well be on the slightly pricier side for some of the more obscure beers but in my opinion, if you are getting really obscure things in that no one else sells, you should be charging more for originality.
Atmosphere in general, there is not much that this pub can’t accommodate for really, its not a huge place but it does have a lot of areas to go. Everyone here is all out for the same reason, to have a good time.
If you havent been here, you need to try The Lord Clifden, its in the middle of nowhere so you probably will need directions but go, just once, eat and drink something different, I guarantee you will have a good time.

Everything you could want in a pub. A MUST when in Brum, Sunday roasts highly recommended!

Have visited here a couple of times and have been impressed by the food, the drinks and the excellent outdoor area.
I have eaten a burger here and it was a delicious chicken and bacon burger washed down with a cider slushy on a hot day. Now cooler weather is here they are also serving a hot winter toddy– perfect to keep you warm as you head outside to the huge beer garden.
Who would think there was a huge beer garden with a BBQ stall, bar and DJ? Plus plenty of room for a heated smoking area, lots of benches and a table tennis table? The atmosphere outside is great and I love that you don’t have to keep going into the crowded bar to get another drink.
If you do sit inside there is an amazing range of gin available. I recommend the bath tub gin!
The music is eclectic and changes depending on whether you are indoors or outdoors. This place is a great place to start a night, especially in the summer.

Great pub with great atmosphere, great music, great choice of drinks, and fantastic food!
It doesn’t look much from the outside, and it’s nestled between phone case shops, however that’s more than made up for inside. Comfy seats, spacious layout, and one of the biggest beer gardens I’ve seen which also has a large area under cover. In the beer garden you’ll also find another bar to save you having to keep going back inside.
If you’re not feeling up to a huge pub meal, they also have a BBQ outside at the weekends, so plenty of choice is available.

This place is just incredible. From the garden to the food, to the quiz to the ale. Visited the Clifden several times throughout my years, and each time you feel part of the furniture. Whether you sit in the bar and watch the football or enjoy a game of ping pong in the blazing summer sun, you’re guaranteed to leave feeling fulfilled.

Great little find on the periphery of the jewellery quarter. Their food wins many plaudits as does the ale, and the prices are reasonable. Plenty of vegetarian options on the gastro pub style menu.
My haloumi burger in breadcrumbs on a nicely toasted brioche bun was very tasty. We ate outside in the big beer garden well away from the football fans watching the game on the tvs which were dotted about. Good quality pub food in a laid back traditional pub with a friendly vibe — whats not to love? Recommended!

Slushy cider!
Situated just up Constitution Hill not far from The Church, this pub is quite unassuming from the outside. However inside it provides a welcome ambiance and that warm cosy feel you get from traditionally decorated pubs. The rooms are quite small but there is quite a buzzing vibe and a mixed crowd which si nice to see. There is also quite a large outdoor area-​obviously great in the summer!

Went here while the World Cup was on, and I have got to admit I was really impressed with the pub. The whole layout gave off the old style fittings of a proper boozer but at the same time it was modern, the garden sitting area was really nice with big screen dotted about the place so the football could be enjoyed in the sun with plenty of sitting, the garden area was pretty busy but it didn’t seem over crowded neither did it look like people were fighting for seats.
Well priced aswell so it’s def worth a trip down there again.

Went here on a Tuesday night and the atmosphere was still good, the disco ball was up and all my favourite 90’s tunes were on.
I had one of there frozen ciders on recommendation and it was lovely from start to finish.
I went to Lord Clifdens on a night out last year and had an awesome time at the back area, There was a DJ and BBQ. I loved that I could smoke and still be in the same area as the dance floor.
When you walk in it looks like a traditional pub but the further you walk in it gets funky.
Great mix of Real Ale and cool tunes.

The Lord Clifden is part of a small chain in Birmingham, the Urban Art Bars (UAB). It’s sister pub is the Red Lion (previously reviewed) and both are situated in the Jewellery Quarter. That’s really where the similarities between the two pubs end.
Whereas the Red Lion seems to cater for more of a «pub crowd» (an older, discerning type who want a relative level of peace while enjoying a craft ale), the Lord Clifden definitely gives off more of a party vibe. Between it’s extensive garden (complete with table football, a postbox, graffiti and ping pong), it’s vibrant street art on the walls (LOTS of Banksy and punky prints) and it’s varied selection of DJ’s… it’s a great place to have a drink late into the evening.
The Clifden serves a good selection of interesting ales (I tried the Rotten Ale last time, named for it’s connections with Johnny Rotten) as well as some Ciders, wines and a pretty good selection of Spirits. In the summer they do Slushy Cider and it’s fabulous to sit in the garden and enjoy a cold pint whilst taking in the Sunshine. They sometimes do a BBQ too!
As expected for a high design pub, a pint aint cheap. You’re looking at around £3.50 upwards for a craft ale, but it always seems to be well kept and fresh. They have a food menu too, but this can be quite hit and miss. I have only had great meals here, but have eaten with friends who have been disappointed with their food.
Unlike many of the other venues in the area, it shows a good range of sports. If you’re a football or rugby fan, you can catch many of the bigger games on the big screens around the whole establishment (including the garden).
It’s a great pub, well worth a try if you haven’t been before. It loses a star for price and inconsistency of food, but it does get an additional one for the large and fabulous garden!

The carvery… Oh goodness the carvery! Delicious, with the option of both beef AND lamb on your plate at once. The whole meal was great quality and expertly cooked. Complete with tasty purple carrots!
I had the smaller portion option which was still very generous indeed.
A nice atmosphere with an eclectic crowd, all represented by the vast jukebox tunes.
Along with a DJ playing chilled out music as the Sunday evening began. Will definitely return sooner rather than later!

Discovered this place a few years ago when my friend promised me that they do one hell of a Sunday roast. Have never looked back and time and time again I find myself here for get togethers, and pre-​drinks at any time of the week.
The inside is not huge so finding seating during the busy periods is a task.
In summer the beer garden is one of the best, with an outside bar, plenty of tables and last time I went a ping pong table.
On bank holidays there is a much larger younger crowd that will be here and I am not sure if they do their parties anymore.
Either way great place, great food and although it can take awhile at the bar it is always worth it for the very cool vibe and mixed crowd this pub brings in.
