In sharp contrast to the YMCA shop next door, the Help the Aged charity shop’s rails were full up. This high amount of stock was obviously attracting the punters, because the place was rammed. It was the first time I encountered a couple of women who seemed to be in every charity shop I went into, who had loud conversations across the entire shop floors. Happily they were loudly engaged in whatever it was they were doing otherwise they might have thought I was following them. The one thing I noticed about the Help the Aged shop that rather put me off, was some of the clothes weren’t that keen. I’m not very good at second-​hand clothes shopping at the best of times, it doesn’t help when it looks like the clothes haven’t been washed.

Help the Aged seems to follow something of a theme for the George Street charity shops and that is a great selection of music, women’s wear and house hold stuff. The men’s wear selection is a bit of a letdown unless you only want your shirts in XL and love beige trousers. Seriously do no thin or athletically built men apart from myself donate their unwanted togs to charity shops?
The home ware section here is a strong point though. Only yesterday on my little tour de charity shops in George Street I found a beautifully authentic looking coffee grinder for five pounds and a selection of pots and pans that would be perfect for my boat. Sadly I have yet to buy the boat so the pots had to stay put. But when it does come to kitting out time this is where I will be heading.
