Cafe Delight

Lovely and chilled independent café on the Gloucester road. Prices very reasonable and all the staff are friendly. Also free wifi which I always approve of!

Something of a Gloucester Road institution, Café Delight is by nature as it is by name. With its eyecatchingly garish yellow shop front, it does the remarkable and succeeds in sticking out from the legions of other cafes which pepper this particular stretch of road.
The food is very well priced and tastes fresh, home-​made and tasty. One criticism is that it’s not exactly the most gourmet of offerings, tending rather to the basic, but then you can’t really expect high end cuisine for prices like these.
There’s a relaxed atmosphere from morning til night, and the outdoor seating is perfect for warm and sunny days. Perhaps not ideal for large groups (there’s not a huge amount of space), it’s at its best when you wake up with an apocalyptic hangover on a warm sunny morning and head off with a couple of friends in tow for a massive breakfast.

This may well be my new favourite café over this end of Bristol. A nutty mixture of Spanish roadside café and retro diner, it’s kitted out with massive round tables and bright red and yellow chairs, and it serves both delicious British fry-​ups and plates of tapas. With its strings of glittery beads hanging from the front windows and slightly garish yellow walls, it may well be a bit too bright and happy for some, particularly the hungover in search of a nourishing fry-​up. The tacky brightness of the whole place is so naff it becomes cool; it has the feel of a European youth hostel bar/​chill-​out area.
It’s so refreshing to find a café where you can choose either alcohol or coffee; these are usually kept very separate in Britain, so this place gets top marks for taking a much more European, casual approach to booze.
That said, I actually did order coffee when I visited, and it was very good: presented beautifully in a huge cup and saucer with sprinkles of sugar and twirly chocolate bits.

One of the many cafes on Gloucester Road, Café Delight is a friendly and welcoming little place that offers food all throughout the day. I have been to this place a couple of times for a classic fry up in the morning after a night out — it’s a great place to stroll along to with a few friends, but it’s not massive so perhaps not great for big groups of you.
From the outside this café actually looks pretty tacky, and it could do with a revamp — but don’t let this put you off, because their service and their food is great. Prices are cheap and you get your moneys worth — making it particularly popular for students of the area!
One thing I would add is that they often put on live music nights, and as it’s a small venue these are great because you get a real personal experience. Often these are open mic nights too, so if you’re a talented singer then get on down and try your luck. I would definitely recommend this place, and it’s worth a visit for a casual quick stop lunch or a relaxing coffee with a friend!

Café Delight is, without any shadow of a doubt, my all time favourite café in Bristol, but it’s difficult to know exactly why. It’s certainly not the yellow décor, and the serviceable, but aesthetically bereft tables and chairs. The food is good and inexpensive, and the lattes are excellent, but I can get equivalents elsewhere in the city.
I think it’s because it’s got the feel of a community caff that somehow rekindles memories of cherished places I’ve frequented in the long and distant past. Everyone that has worked there over the years has been so utterly helpful and cheerful that you know that Debs, the owner, is coming from a good place. With local artists exhibiting on the walls, and plenty of posters and flyers amongst other reading material, I guess it also reminds me of the more considered eateries I’ve found on the festival circuit over the years. This is in no small part owing to the tables that line the pavement out front. Being in th most populated 100 meters of the Gloucester Road, this means that there’s actually plenty of life to be viewed from here, unlike so many other cafes and restaurants further up the strip.
They used to host music nights here up until about a year ago, but the acquisition of new premises on Perry Street, at the bottom of St Michael’s Hill, has preoccupied the small team that run the place to such an extent that they’ve had to temporarily shelve the evening events. I called in for a coffee the other day and enquired when the music is likely to start again. I was encouraged to here that they are discussing it at the moment, so hopefully it’ll see a comeback before too long.

Café Delight is located on Gloucester Road and during the day it makes a very nice place to stop off for a cup of coffee and a snack. I personally first visited because, well, I needed the toilet. From the outside I originally thought it looked a little tacky and overbearing so I had avoided going in for a good couple of years. However, I was really pleasantly surprised as its by no means tacky, just cheerful, not overbearing but friendly.
They do a really good selection of hot and cold beverages, along with a good lunch menu. Prices aren’t bad and the quality of the food really is much better than the price you pay for it. Personally, I have never visited in the evening, but by the sounds of their cocktail menu it would be worth it!
Café Delight really is a delight!

After having my haircut at Mack Daddy’s I was in search for a spot of lunch and a chance to show off my new do! After a strut down Gloucester Road, I came across Café Delight with its bright yellow shutters and knew that was the place for me.
I ordered a cup of tea and a banana and peanut butter sandwich, took a seat and enjoyed the atmosphere. There’s fun music on in the background, chatty happy conversation and tasty food to be enjoyed here. It’s a tad on the expensive side for what is essentially an independent café but I’d happily go back.
Great place to meet friends for lunch or for a hungover breakfast.

Being on Gloucester Road, this place certainly appeals to the trendy young professional market that seem to frequent the surrounding shops and bars at the weekend. The food is quite poncey considering it’s nothing more than a greasy spoon, but it’s actually quite nice, if a little pricey.
One of the best things about this place though (and a little unusual) is the fact that they sell alcohol in the evening, so if you’re bored of pubs, or can’t find a seat someplace else, this little known fact makes this place a secret gem in the evening.
The staff are friendly and the atmosphere is very laid back, with local artists work for sale on the walls. Look out for the music events that they sometimes put on. Not amazing, but something to do if you’re near by.

A lovely café, probably the best on Gloucester Road I would say, Café Delight where’s its name well. All too popular, getting a place here on a weekend morning can be a struggle. Half of Bishopston seems to converge on this place with the intention of having a lazy saturday morning. The result is the place is humming at these times, with the staff kept very busy.
I think it’s better off coming in the evening. They do live music here pretty often and have alcohol as well, so its certainly an appropriate place fo this. Although the focus is on the breakfasts, there’s plenty of dinner offerings as well. So for dinner, lunch on brunch, Café delight has lots to offer.

This is a bit of an up-​market greasy spoon it’s definitely a place to be seen on the vibrant Gloucester road, with familiar faces of the neighbourhood often milling around there.
For a good price, you can get one of the best cooked breakfasts in Bristol, which cures a hangover no end — I talk from many a morning of experience! But this isn’t just a morning place, they do a good lunch menu, a hearty selection of tapas, excellent cakes, and some interesting varieties of home-​made ice creams: lemon meringue and honeycomb among the specials. You can even have a leisurely draught pint as you watch the world go by on the hustle and bustle of the Gloucester road.
Honest food, decent prices, and a welcoming atmosphere makes café delight well worth a visit.

I have frequently visited café delight ofr breakfast or lunch on a lazy weekend morning, and I love it. If you can manage to secure yourself a table (it gets really really busy, especially on a saturday morning) and squeeze yourself in between all the children that are running around. You queue up to order off the menu on the blackboard. They have a fantastic selection of breakfasts of differing sizes dwepending on how hungry you are, and a few different veggie breakfasts as well. They also do sandwiches, salads, and more substantial meals as well. The food may take a little while to come, but as you drink your good coffe and read the papers somehow you never really seem to mind. The food is always good and fresh when it does arrive, and if you feel it is taking to long and complain they are apologetic and give a free coffee (in the few times I have had to do this anyway). The owners are lovely as are the rest of the staff and altohugh crammed with tables, the seating arrangement along with the quirky bits of art on the wall for sale, the atmosphere is always really good.

Friendly staff, and good food. What makes a café great. I’ve never been to any of the music events, but i’ve heard that they’re great, so definitely worth going back again.

I love this place becuase every member of staff in there is friendly and has a great musical/​artistic background. It is very alternative, and has a great menu. The cake is especially exquisite. There are many places to frequent on Gloucester Road but this is the best in terms of atmosphere and range. A great café.

This café is run by an ex-​music teacher which explains its musical atmosphere! It is a friendly warm place, run by lovely people. The food is good quality and not expensive, it kind of reminds me of a greasy spoon mixed with a music bar like Mr. Wolfs.

The food is quite nice here (and a good price too,) and they sell alcohol in the evening if you’re bored of pubs, with tables outside if you want to smoke. The staff are friendly and the atmosphere is very laid back and a little artsy, with local artists work for sale on the walls… which I would buy if I had the money.
Look out for the music events that they sometimes put on because they’ve always been great when I’ve been along — quite intimate and interesting — including pheramin players and musicians who use loop stations to great effect with unusual instruments like cellos.
