The 10 O’Clock Shop

The quirky little detail of this shop being called The 10 O’Clock Shop even though it’s open every day until 11pm is enough to win this place several stars! I believe it used to open just till 10pm, but I love the fact that they didn’t change the name when they adjusted the opening hours. Charming!
Anyway, it’s a brilliant convenience store in its own right, regardless of the name. I like the feel of it, tucked underneath the houses on Richmond Terrace, and it’s really well stocked and reliable, with extra things like a full pick ‘n’ mix stand! It’s very friendly and helpful, and it’s got one of those thoroughly local noticeboards out in front displaying ads for flats, community groups, and other neighbourhood bits and bobs.
I recommend that students buying tins of beans etc at the Student Union shop down the road come here to The 10 O’Clock Shop instead; it’s much friendlier and you have a better sense of being connected with other non-​student people living in Clifton.

Ah they have one of those community boards outside I love; you can do yoga with Charlotte, hire a man with a van, take ‘adult’ violin lessons (ooh er) or send your dog to boarding school! What else do you need to know about a community?
As well as acting as the town notice board, this is a very handy corner shop, run by a friendly local family. They have a massive selection of munchies (sweet treats), a huge range of alcohol and spirits and last but not least, they have a Pick ‘n’ mix!
This shop is packed full of bits & pieces it’s not hard to see why they have done so well in the heart of the student community. They even sell children’s footballs. Although they had sold out of my favourite newspaper today at lunchtime!
The mystery of why it is called the ten o’clock shop rages on.

The 10 O’clock shop, the shop with the lying name. I’m unsure whether this is ironic or testament to a time prior to later alcohol purchasing laws. I lived by this place for almost a year and found it handy, friendly and convenient; pretty much everything you need in a local shop.
This shop is literally situated within a hole in the wall on the Victoria Square end of Richmond terraces. Here you’ll find bizarre items, ill thought out offers and endearing quirks that would only be found in a small independently run corner shop. These range from offers on halloween costumes and décor, junk-​filled hampers in the Easter Raffle, tennis balls and pick n’ mix. It gives the impression that it is scraping by day to day, which is not necessarily the case with the amount of students in the area and certainly isn’t a ‘needy’ bad thing either, it just makes me want to go there over Tesco or Somerfield.
The best bits are the sweets and the selection of beer, of which there are plenty of offers. there’s also handy little bits you can pick up if you need, like cheese, snacks, bread newspapers, washing up liquid etc etc. The staff are nice and friendly and very typically Bristol. Ooh are me babber etc.
The notice board outside is also pretty handy and well-​used by locals. There’s ads for martial arts, second hand stuff, rooms to rent, pets and anything in between, before and beyond.
Tip — if you’re buying beer, ask for cold ones, they have a fridge-​full behind the counter.

Where possible it’s also nice to use local shops rather than chains, sometimes it’s difficult because it may not be the most convenient or cheapest option, but the Ten O’clock Shop is doing well to keep a good choice.
It is, actually open a little litter than 10, and is a great stop off on your way to house parties, on your way back from work, or generally on your way to /​from somewhere. It’s got sweets and chocolate and nice things like that as well as milk and bread which is always handy to know. In my experience, the wine is good for the price.

As a corner shop that isn’t on the corner, the Ten O’clock doesn’t close at 10, making it a bit of a confusing place. Jokes aside though, as a local convenience store, I love it. Don’t be alarmed by the beeping sound that happens each and every time someone enters or leaves the shop, you get used to it! Divided into two bits, the first focuses on tins and bread, a bit of veg and other staples, as well as magazines. The second part where the counter is is where you find the booze and chilled items. Though a pretty small shop, they dont have a bad selection, and whats more, the staff are always very friendly and up for a natter. It makes a good change from the souless Tesco round the corner, and by using this long established shop, you’d be supporting a local business.

It actually closes later than ten so the name makes no sense, but I suppose it did at some point. This corner shop is very localish, with staff that say hello and haven’t changed in years. They’ve got sweets, bread, wine, cans, and about a thousand other things stuffed into here — I very much appreciate being able to dash up at 10.23 pm and fulfil late night hunger pangs.
The alcohol selection is particularly good with cheap wine and cans of lager, making it popular with students. They have a noticeboard outside which is a bit of a community focal points. A good place to find or advertise flats, music tuition, and such like. If you do go, make sure not to miss the little alley leading off the back room — it took me ages to realise it’s there. Probably not as cheap as some Supermarkets but pretty reasonable for Clifton. The Ten O’Clock shop is a standard corner shop that’s got everything for your day to day shopping needs.
