History

Established in 1780.

This historic late 18th century lodging house, offering bed & breakfast accommodation, is set in two acres of Derbyshire hillside above the popular tourist village of Matlock Bath.

The majority of en-suite guest rooms have beautiful views over the Derwent Valley. The Temple has its own award winning real ale bar serving a selection of local real ales and a wonderful collection of scotch single malt whiskies. Matlock Bath has numerous cafes, fish & chip shops and restaurants.

This independent bed & breakfast will have had numerous distinguished people cross its threshold. Lord Byron was so moved by his visit to Matlock Bath that whilst dining he was inspired to etch a poem on the dining room window. This room, aptly name The Byron Room is now the breakfast room. The pane of glass with Lord Byron’s famous ‘unfinished poem’ was later signed by a young princess Victoria when she visited Matlock Bath before becoming Queen.
