Just when I think that the digital age has overwhelmed our whole culture with eReaders taking over from real books and LEGO migrating onto the computer, it’s heartening to see a shop like Dorking models. No, they don’t deal with models of the catwalk or editorial variety but are a wonderful throwback to the days of kids making things. They stock different kinds of models but the ones evoking the strongest memories for me are the Airfix models where I struggled to make sense of the flimsy instructions, sandpapered the plastic parts to perfection, glued them together before painstakingly painting them. Happy days indeed. They also stock parts for model railways though they don’t have the largest selection in the shop. Their window displays are also quite impressive with one of a behemoth of a rail-transported German World War 2 artillery gun.
