Description

Specialties

Shop featuring artwork, jewellery, cards, gifts, paintings, household items and furniture. Everything is made or upcycled by local artists, mainly by Dodo, who you will usually find working in the shop making the items. She will also do commissions if you have an old piece of furniture you would like brought back to life.

History

Established in 2012.

In 2012, the business of Steptoes was closing, and had a big ‘for sale’ sign on the front. Now anyone who has been down there knows what an amazing space it is. It looks small from the street, but is a nice cavern inside.

Dodo has always been an artist, and had recently been working in a backpackers hostel, during which time she started painting the furniture (as well as the walls and every other surface!). The painted furniture appealed to everyone because of it’s originality, sense of humour and quality. When the hostel ended, the owner knew he didn’t want to see Dodo working in an office, so when he stumbled upon Steptoes for sale, he knew it was an opportunity to help Dodo set up her own place let her creativity shine, and more importantly to share it.

Diedododa was born, and it has evolved over time, and now features works by other makers as well as Dodo’s own creations.

Meet the Manager

Dodo F.

Manager

My name is Dodo and I am a self-taught artist, German-born but Edinburgh-living and loving for over 10 years.

My main emphasis is on redesigned and hand painted furniture, somewhat surreal artwork, quirky jewellery but also objects ranging from the adorable to the macabre. I mainly draw inspiration from subjects such as Botany, Anatomy and brightly coloured Wildlife — sometimes throwing them all together to wait and see what comes out. Yay!
