Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop

I rarely visit art galleries on the outskirts of town. And in fact, this isn’t a gallery — it’s an artists’ studio space with installation artwork.
I took a wee number 7 bus down this way into Newhaven (it stops only 2 minutes away). Wandering down a small road, that seems to lead no where, I came across first a falling-​down building with «Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop» sign upfront. Beyond that, a very modern, sleek building: all glass, and edges and clean and crisp. Buzz to get in, a lovely receptionist, sign in. And then descend to see the installation.
ESTaylor’s piece peers above the stairwell. And so the installation begins. It is there, the lungs of the building, no forewarning. No plaque explaining. Just the sudden blue.
Downstairs, you realise it’s full size. What at first seemed small is in fact stretching far beyond the eye can see (from either up above or down below) and that bright blue fabric, so captivating in colour.
A room around the corner opens into another exhibition by another aritst.
And then another room for the artists’ talks.
And a few other rooms for the artists’ studio space.
I’m not an artist, but if I was I think I’d enjoy coming here to work. It might be out the way, but it’s a beautifully kept space, with friendly staff, and just that right balance of quiet and not-​too-​quiet to be inspiring.
