is a shop dedicated to good design with a sense of theatre. Our aim is to provide an enticing range of stylish accessories for your home and exciting gifts to give to others — or yourself.

Set in a series of basements in the heart of Georgian Edinburgh, each room tells its own story. Our Gallery Collection has unusual one-off pieces — perfect for that special occasion. We have great treats for girls — from handcrafted jewellery to luxurious bath products and lots of inspiring ideas for men’s gifts too. In our toy section you will find a fantastic range of wooden toys and pocket money goodies. We also have great collections for dining and living — something for every room in your home.

Studio One is situated in Edinburgh’s vibrant West End. Here you will find an eclectic mix of clothes boutiques, shoe shops, beauty salons and hairdressers as well as relaxing bars and a wide choice of restaurants to revive you

History

Established in 1966.

Studio one was founded in 1966 by John Johnson. Bored by the humdrum shops of the era, John decided to create a launch pad for his own products, handmade studio pottery and glass and contemporary Scandinavian design. Starting from a single basement Studio One gradually took over neighbouring spaces to form a unique shop. Over the years the product range has constantly changed and evolved but the one constant has always been good design and good value.

Studio One Furniture soon outgrew its space and moved to Morningside. In 1982 the card section split off in the form of Paper Tiger — trading from its stores in Stafford Street and Lothian Road it is the perfect place to find a special card and stylish gift-wrap. The three businesses continue to be run as a family of shops.

Business Owner

John Johnson is the founder and Chairman and still sets the creative direction for all our stores. Daniel Johnson is the Creative Director and has been working in the business since 2008 with responsibility for buying and commercial strategy. Michael Apter is the Operations Director for Paper Tiger and Studio One. The Studio One store is managed by Ruth Denniston.

I’m going to go all out and say that this is the BEST gift shop I’ve ever had the joy of stepping in.
This beautiful sister shop of Paper Tiger is huge and bright and just bursting with such lovely things, many of which are made by very talented local folks. — Three cheers for shopping local!
There’s soap and candles and chocolate and jewellery and homeware and glassware and cookery books and basically anything that anyone you’ve ever known would be happy to own. I’m sure anything from Studio One can prompt a smile. And don’t forgot to treat yourself. — There’s things in that quirky basement shop that you never knew you needed.
Seriously, for all my future gifting needs, I know Studio One can help me out. The shop is a delight to browse. Bonus points for super friendly and helpful staff, just like Paper Tiger!

Studio One is awesome. When you have to buy a present and don’t have a clue what to get, studio one is almost always has the answer. They have a great range of gifts, toys, household things, nice soaps/toiletries, nicely packages food stuff and lots of other things.
It can be a little expensive but you get really nice stuff and it’s quite unusual so makes great presents. In the run up to Christmas it gets super busy here but the staff are friendly and helpful so you can cope with it being busy.

This is the perfect gift shop. Hidden away in a basement in the West End village it really is a little treasure trove.
The shop is deceptively large, with a warren of rooms, each showcasing a different thing, from jewellery, to candles, to toys, kitchenware and handbags.
At Christmastime they have a beautiful selection of Christmas decorations and it’s worth a visit to see these alone.
I’ve never left this shop empty handed, it’s my go-to place to pick up gifts that are a little bit unusual. Many of their items are made by local artists and the displays usually tell you a bit about them.

Studio One is absolutely delightful! I could spend hours looking at all the cute knick-knacks and cool gadgets that they sell, and if I ever get married it’s going to be a toss-up between here and John Lewis as to who gets my registry.
My mum has fond memories of Studio One too, and she’s lived in Glasgow for 30 years! «Ooh I loved Studio One, does that still exist?» is the sort of thing she’ll say. So it’s been around and much loved for a long time.
If you’re stuck for present ideas for a birthday or Christmas you’re bound to find something here that’ll suit — then nip upstairs to PaperTiger for wrapping paper and a card. Sorted!

Great wee hidden gem of a shop just off Shandwick place. Guaranteed to find something unusual for a present and the toys section is traditional and you find yourself playing with wooden snakes, slinkies and yoyos!
I can easily spend a fortune in this lovely shop.
They have it decorated so nicely for Christmas.

I love this little homeware/toy/gift shop tucked away in the basement. I love that they showcase a lot of local artists and jewellery makers as well.
This really is a great place to go to find gifts for anyone of any age! They have things which are hilarious and quirky to gorgeous cushions, lampshades, wine decanters and various other things you probably never realised you wanted until you saw it…
The staff are always super friendly and helpful but totally happy to leave you alone to browse and fossick around…
I always stop in and have a poke around when I’m in the West End… it’s probably the only place in Edinburgh to buy that tea thermometer you never knew you needed!

«Oooo look at all the beautiful THINGS!» I guarantee 99% of girls who walk in here will think or exclaim just that. This place is a little (but actually really rather big) Aladin’s Cave of literally allsorts.
It’s even fun in itself to wander around, as it has different ‘rooms’ that go around in one big loop, so as you wander deeper into it, you don’t know when it will end, until you’re back at the front door again. Just let the rooms of delight keep on coming!
I took a right at the front door, and found some jewellery cases, a room full of gorgeous leather hand bags, vases, clocks, which merged into cookware, cookbooks, which then became candles, toiliteries that smelled like chocolate, slowly becoming chocolate that was flavoured with lavendar, which turned into chocolate coins and children toys. Really quite the magical window-shopping experience!
I came very close to buying one of the gorgeous hand-made brown leather satchels, so have yet to purchase anything here but it is delightful to wander round.
If you ever need a gift for a good lady friend, or even a special man in your life, you’ll likely find it here. It’s a little bit pricier in some respects, but sells very high quality products (think artisan chocolate rather than Thorntons).

When I first strolled past Studio One, I thought it was a trendy bar — I couldn’t see inside the windows since I was on the opposite side of the road and it’s situated on the lower level of the street.
How excited was I to find one of the best shops in Edinburgh!
Selling all kinds of everything, they have some cute retro kids toys, a number of popular classic books, prints, very unique shelving units shaped like tower blocks, quirky board games and funky notepads — like I said, everything.
Even though there is a huge amount of choice in this sleek, clean shop, items are unique, quirky and packed with personality. Some of the more expensive stock looks like it has been made by independent designers, and even the more mainstream stuff is cool and unusual.
I will be going back to Studio One to do my Christmas shopping — it is the cutting edge of cool and one of the best stores you can find in Edinburgh! It’s more like a miniature modern art gallery showcasing trends and odd designs than it is a shop.

The layout of this place is reminds me of an art gallery. The precision layout, interesting point of sale displays and overall clean and crisp presentation makes for a pleasant wander round the shop, not to mention the explosion of colour apparent at the entrance.
Studio one is great for the odd unique present. The children toy section is full of charming playthings, whilst the more practical household section contains some Ikea beating designs.
Upmarket and not afraid to show (in the prices too), Studio one is full of innovatively designed stuff.

Studio One lies hidden away in a basement in the west end, it is a veritable treasure cove of useless yet desirable little knick knacks. My mum used to come here for stocking fillers when I was wee and that’s probably the best way to describe the contents of the shop: it’s full of stocking fillers. Admittedly there are some useful bits and pieces like hideously expensive cookware (heart shaped Le Creuset casserole dishes, I want!) and some decent enough items of jewellery, but who wants to bother with boring stuff like that when there are fortune telling fish and worry dolls beckoning to you. This is a fantastic shop to visit if you’re in need of an inexpensive and interesting present for someone.

It’s definitely a classic Edinburgh lifestyle shop. If you’re the kind of person that likes their children to have stylish wooden toys and organic pencils then you’ll be in some kind of pointless heaven.
With everything being high quality, the price tags match but their stock is basically just novelty and smaller items.
Studio one echoes the middle class Edinburgh thing and good on it, there’s a market there which Studio One’s basement shop has grabbed by the balls.

This shop has loads of cute things that are great gifts, plus lots of things you’ve never realised how much you ‘needed’ until you saw them here. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly and the staff are very helpful. The prices are also generally reasonable and it’s a really fun window shopping destination too.

Rather nice shop downstairs and upstairs there is an even nicer jewelry shop.
Downstairs — lots of gifts, jewelry, toys, glassware etc. They had nice scarfs last time I was there — really good for presents.
Upstairs — this is more expensive and gallery like. They have really beautiful jewelry, handbags, scarfs and nice arty things like sculptures and pottery. Perfect place for special presents.

There is a little bit of everything in this shop and I could spend hours deciding what to buy and still come back the next day to buy more.
It has a nice mixture of stuff, from the kind of new age era to traditional kids toys and books to joky gifts. There really is something for everyone here and you can find unusual vases or carved goods that you just can’t find anywhere else in Edinburgh. The prices are quite reasonable as well and it isn’t an in your face kind of place. In fact, you could walk past it and not know it was there. One of Edinburgh’s hidden gems.

This is the best place to go shopping for presents for girls! You can always find something. It’s fun and quirky with a nice layout of lots of interconnecting rooms. They sell jewellery, kitchen stuff, throws and picture frames, toys, lots and lots of decorative and smelly candles with assorted candle holders, some really lovely bathroom gifts such as bath salts and soapy rose petals and funky little wash bags. Endless gift ideas!

Open until 7pm on a thursday night, this is often where I can be found, especially if it is near anyone’s birthday! A great place to look for a gift for someone, I tend to nearly always find something. The shop is split in to different areas that flow well together as mini departments. They have a wide range of scented candles, quality glass ware, cook books, soft furnshings and my favourite — the terramundi pot. I love it at Christmas time as they have all sorts of additional goodies, a great place to find stocking fillers!
