Having been to many up-market salons in the Glasgow area and not been overly impressed with the result given the price tag, I thought I would give Alan Edwards a shot. Luckily I had no reason to be hesitant about another high end salon. Hannah listened to what I wanted and cut my hair absolutely beautifully. I would honestly say my hair hasn’t been cut this well in ages. The whole salon environment is lovely and warming and the products used are excellent. Overall I am pleased that I have now found my new go-to salon.

I have pretty difficult hair, so I’m used to spending a decent amount at hair salons. So I have no problem paying £40 for a haircut, but I know other people might. They have different prices for different stylists. I see Rosie, who is in the middle price range. She’s great, and I’ll probably keep going to see her for as long as I’m in Glasgow. I trust her with my naturally curly hair, which she cuts after straightening it to make sure it’s even. And because I have such an absurd amount of hair, they always have two people dry and straighten it, which keeps the appointment from dragging on ridiculously long.

Despite living in Glasgow for about 3.5 years(collectively), I haven’t had the greatest luck with hair stylists. This is surprising because there seems to be as many salons dotted about the city as there are pubs. Either you need to remortgage your house for meh results, your hair gets butchered, or the stylist bullies you into dyeing your already black hair black. Fortunately, I’m not one of those girls who cries when it comes to their hair, and my hair grows like. a. weed. After the bullying incident at another Merchant City salon, I thought I’d wait until I was back in NYC to get my hair done. Except my hair became annoyingly long, and that’s where Chloe at Alan Edwards came to the rescue. Cute and quirky, she was exactly the opposite of the stylist during my last salon experience(*cough* Chesne). She actually listened to what I wanted, did not roll her eyes when I showed her a picture of the shape(a long bob), nor did she try and bully me into dying my hair or try to sell me products that I didn’t need(though I did end up buying the Kérastase volume spray because it smells DIVINE!). My haircut was actually part of an itison deal, but after my experience and subsequent visits(I have since gone much shorter with trust), I would not hesitate to pay full price for the quality of service received. I think Alan Edwards Merchant City and Chloe might be a keeper… just might!

Hairdresser highly recommended for curly girls — they really know what they are doing, helped Im sure by a curly co-owner. The service can be a tad rushed and you are well aware there is a person waiting for your stylist, but considering how hard it is to find a good hairdresser, you can let it slide. And you dont always get offered a brew, which is sort of a rookie mistake. Having said that, when I went at Xmas I got to watch 15 mins of the wizard of oz whilst having my hair washed and treated — nice touch!

My curly locks have never been more thankful than the day I found Alan Edwards Salon. It’s an up-market hair salon, with up-market prices, but I love the fact it’s not pretentious and you don’t have to look like you’ve stepped out of Elle in A/W 10(yes I’m looking at you Toni & Guy). I originally had Shelley cut my hair, but after she left I have Elaine(Alan Edward’s wife and co-owner) cut my hair. The reason being they both have curly hair and they cut it dry. This, I can confidently say, is a rarity to find. A curly hair dresser who understands curls and wants to cut your hair curly(not wet, straightened and blow dryed). In the three years I’ve been a client, I’ve gone shorter, blonder, longer, slightly darker, and every time(with one or two exceptions) I’ve been delighted with the cut. I’m one of those awkward customers who wants something a BIT different but not RADICALLY different, just something to change it up but without looking like a new person. The bane of many hair dressers life I imagine(well what DO you want?! The same or something new??) But each time they’ve managed to do the colour a bit lighter, or the shape a bit rounder or longer and I’ve been a happy bunny. I can’t speak for guys, or girls with straight hair wanting standard /fashionable /funky cuts. But all the colour stylists(Michelle, Andrew and especially Kirsty) have done great jobs and Elaine is wonderful with curls. Having observed other customers and their hair dressers(40 minutes for the colour to set gives ample people-watching time) there’s always good-natured banter, laughing, chatting, and all the stylists sit with the client for a good 5 — 10 minutes for a consultation before they begin chopping. And I’ve never seen an unhappy customer. For a good quality cut and colour, in a genuine relaxed salon(the stylists wear jeans, boots and tshirts — not all black, or culture vulture fashionistas — this immediately puts me at ease) then check out Alan Edwards. There’s a student discount that I used to take advantage of. For a cut and colour with a stylist it’s roughly £120, with a senior stylist it’s £150(but this does all depend on how much colour you get — T-Bar, Highlights or full head etc.) This has been the savior of my locks, and perhaps even my «look». As most girls would agree, your hair is your ‘thing’ and having suffered a good 3 or 4 years with a permanently frizzy, unshapely mop, Alan Edwards gave me back my goldilocks.

A few years back, when I was a bit more of a preening nancy boy, I used to always get my longish and luxurious locks cut here. It’s quite an upmarket salon and has been featured on TV and the like, so I’d say you stand a pretty good shout of leaving here with a glorious new barnet every time. I used to get my do here from a guy called Scott, whom had excellent banter and was considerably more laddish than any other hairdresser i’ve met. I can highly recommend him and the place in general. I’ve not been here in a while now, mainly due to the fact I couldn’t really justify blowing almost £50 on a trim so regularly, but when the cash comes rolling in I’d gladly givve them another visit.

Alan Edwards is a very swanky hair salon on Fenwick Road, aimed at «ladies who lunch» and wear sunglasses even when it’s dark and drive a shiny black Mercedes. I don’t get my hair cut here but if gets a really good name and my aunt gets her new do in her regularly. One of my friends has been going here since she was about 9 and always goes here to get her hair styled for a party or special ocassion and her hair always looks amazing. The prices range depending on who is cutting your barnet. For a stylist it’s £30, senior stylist £40 and by the creative director it’s £50. They also do hair conditioning and replenishing treatments that start from a whopping £100. A very modern salon, very organised and not a hair out of place. Literally.
