Every year, an award winner at the Scottish BAFTAs will make a dramatic criticism of the Scottish Film Industry. At this gala event, the guests will shift uncomfortably in their fancy dress, and applaud. Then they wait until next year, for another attack. Members get advance screenings of new films, not just the Scottish ones(they would hardly get value for money out of it). If this BAFTA was set up to support the Caledonian cinema, it hasn’t done that well: if it is viewed as an enthusiastic club for cinephiles, it is fantastic. The annual awards do bring attention to the Scottish industry, which is more than other organisations manage, but it difficult to understand where BAFTA fits. It does give credit to local filmmakers, which is nice, but it rarely troubles the national scene.
