This is genuinely the best chip shop I have visited. As previous reviews have said it is basic but it’s real food. It’s great value for money, the portions are huge! The staff are great too, never fail to get a laugh when your in. The full family love it and we are beginning to become regulars lol! Try the fish and chips that’s my personal favourite!

Benny’s is not only my local chip shop, I would have to say it’s my favourite, and the best, «chippie» I’ve tried in Glasgow. I always knew fish & chip shops were a big deal in Scotland so I was eager to try one shortly after arriving here. I asked my boyfriend which one I should try to see what all the fuss was about, to which he instantly replied«BENNY’S!» — no hesitation there! This has always been his local and he sold me on it. As soon as you open the door it just smells delicious! The place is nothing fancy, just a small classic old fashioned chippie, but that adds to the place. I like the see through counter as it lets you see all the food that’s on offer and what looks the freshest. On my first visit I played it safe and just ordered ‘a bag of chips’ — NOTFRIES! They smelled amazing and I couldn’t wait to get home and try them. I never used to put vinegar on my chips until I moved here & will never go back as it’s such a wonderful flavour to top chips with! The chips looked delicious as soon as I opened the bag, very chunky, very little grease and a generous portion… they tasted even better!(the best l I’ve tried from any kind of place like this). A great first experience and I’m glad I listened to the recommendation. I’ve since been back numerous times to try different things on the menu and been equally impressed each time. The only thing I wasn’t sold on, and I don’t think I’ll ever be, was the hamburger, just not my thing. Luckily my boyfriend was on hand to finish that for me as apparently he’ll eat anything battered, so at least it didn’t go to waste! Overall I’ve always had a very positive experience at Benny’s and would recommend it to anyone.

this place has been serving third rate fish suppers for at least 40 years, cheap fish that taste as if they have been lying around for days, soggy batter and greasy chips. avoid

Upon first moving to the beloved East End of Glasgow I was told ‘Oh, have you been to Benny’s yet?’ To which I replied ‘Benny’s?! What the???’ I was told they do the ‘best fish supper’ in Glasgow. When I heard this I just HAD to find out for myself coz dats how I roll, yo. This is truly one of your ‘old school’ chippys ~ no fancy seating area or artwork from Athena on the walls, nope, just pure old-style chip shop counter and what I like to call the ‘Viewing Area’ ~ the wee bit where you can peruse their edible wares; eyeing up the fritters and battered sausages, mmmm… They also sell the usual chip shop-that-also-doubles-as-wee-corner-shop goods too such as chocolate bars, sweeties, biscuits, fags, vinegar and the like. I ordered for myself the(now legendary) fish supper and for the boy a sausage supper. Service is usually pretty snappy and considering this place gets very busy at times(another good indicator that this is a quality chippy) I am impressed at their speedy service. Took our suppers home and WOW! There was enough chips and fish in my supper to feed 2 people(well, 2, not as hungry as I was, people) Yas! I like to get my moneys worth! Having said that quantity does not always equal quality but in this case it did. Chips were lovely; chunky, not too greasy or crispy and the fish was really good, quality fish. The boy’s sausage supper was equally HUGE and upon trying the sausage that was top notch too. Prices for a supper are average, maybe below average compared to town/West End but for the sheer vast amount of food you get for your money it is most definitely worth it. This is now our favourite local chippy and rightly so.

I am a regular customer at Benny’s Fish & Chicken Bar, Alexandra Parade, Glasgow. If you are in the area you really should pop in. The staff are friendly and polite, and the portions are served in proper sizes a ‘bag of chips’ is a bag of chips here, not served in a tiny polystirene carton as some chippies do. Try their Steak Pie or King Rib suppers they are wonderful. Or instead, a plain bag of chips will do take my word for it very tasty indeed! Prices are very reasonable, too.

I visited this place as a child and went in recently for nostalga’s sake. I used to get a gammon steak supper from it, but it wasn’t how I remembered it unfortunately. The place was clean and the staff were nice enough. They still ahve the wrought iron stuff over the counter to keep unwanted visitors at bay… it has been like that for about 30 years, time for a fit out perhaps?
